What you will do You will work in a CBSA postal service or international airport in collaboration with Border Services Officers (BSO) to determine the admissibility of people and goods to and from Canada by performing some of the following tasks: interviewing travelers from various backgrounds and cultures examining various declarations and goods identifying fraudulent documents providing quality service and education to the travelling public identifying people and goods that pose a threat to Canada assessing risk preventing drugs, firearms & other prohibited goods from entering Canada making decisions Note: SBSOs will not carry a duty firearm.Duration: Full-time summer employment (May to August 2020) - possibility of part-time re-hire for fall 2020 and winter 2021.Experience working as a Student Border Services Officer is considered an asset in the CBSA Officer Trainee Developmental Program selection process. the duties and training required of an SBSO (where required) training to carry, use and maintain CBSA-issued defensive equipment (where required)

TrainingSBSOs receive a combination of classroom and online training, as well as on-the-job coaching and mentoring.

Control and Defensive Tactics (CDT) TrainingA large portion of the training that most student border services officers will undergo involves physically demanding use of force training. The duration for this rigorous component of the training will be two full weeks in which student border services officers will learn the basics of defense and control tactics. The skills and techniques learned during this time are very physical and require the student border services officer to be prepared physically. As such, it is critical that student border services officers prepare themselves physically before they arrive at the training centre to ensure their best physical condition and readiness. This will help guard against training injuries and ensure you get the most out of the training. Successful completion of the Control and Defensive Tactics training component may be required prior to obtaining a letter of offer.

SBSO Summer hiring for the 2020 student border service officer opens each August offering on-

Student border services officers are an important part of our workforce. CBSA hires approximately 600 student border services officers annual who work with BSO’s from May to September to meet increased traffic demands at airports and postal processing centres to support summer staffing requirements. SBSOs are positioned at some major airports across the country including Pearson International Airport, Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport, Vancouver International Airport and Ottawa’s McDonald Cartier International Airport.

We now have a process in place that makes it easier for qualified SBSOs who were recently, or are currently working for the Agency to become full-time border services officers.

Q.1: How do I apply?

Q.2: What are the requirements to apply?

A.2: You need to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, studying full-time at a recognized institution and returning to school full-time in the next term. You also need to be willing to wear and maintain a uniform and work various shifts.

Students in programs like criminology, law, safety/security studies, psychology, sociology, customs border services or police studies may be given preference.

Q.3: Do students need to have a driver’s license?

A.3: In some locations you’ll need a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive a government vehicle.

Q.4: Do students carry the duty firearm?

A.4: Student border service officers are not armed. That said, in some cases, we equip students with other defensive tools. Training for appropriate use and maintenance is provided.

Q.5: What is involved in the hiring process?

A.5: Online application through our website, exam (OTEE), interview and secret security clearance. If you are hired to work at an airport, you’ll also need to do a medical exam.

Q.6: Do SBSOs need to be bilingual?

A.6: We hire SBSOs in both English essential and bilingual positions. If you are hired in a bilingual position, you must be able to read, write and speak in your second official language (English or French) at the intermediate level.

Q.7: Is there a minimum height or PARE requirement for SBSOs?

A.7: There is no physical exam or assessments for student border services officer positions.

Q.8: How long will it take to hear back after I apply?

A.8: When you apply, your application is submitted to an inventory, meaning that it is not immediately assessed. We select applications for summer employment in the fall and starts assessments in December/ January.

A.12: CBSA now has a process in place that makes it easier for qualified student border services officers, who have recently, or are currently working for us to transition into training to become full-time border services officers.

Questions related to the Cannabis Policy

Q.13: What is the cannabis policy for recruitment CBSA officers?

A.13: The CBSA has adopted a Policy on the Use of Intoxicants and it states the following: The Agency’s policy is one of zero tolerance for impairment, unauthorized possession or consumption of intoxicants in the workplace for all employees. Furthermore, individuals occupying safety sensitive positions must refrain from consuming cannabis in any form, for medical or recreational purposes, within 24 hours of reporting for regular duty, standby or overtime.

Q.14: As an applicant you are not penalized for recreationally consuming cannabis since its legalization?

A.14: Applicants will be invited to divulge any relevant information about consumption during the various evaluations. Candidates are globally assessed and it is very difficult to answer the question specific to your case.
