Transcript of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Women’s ClubPippa White calls her One's Company Productions "part...
I extend a warm wel-
come to not only our
current members but also
newcomers to the UNL
Women’s Club as we
begin the 2013-2014
year. We look forward
to an enjoyable and in-
teresting experience!
The main focus of the
UNL Women’s Club is
to provide service to the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We are proud of
our efforts in assisting students who
have financial needs. The club awards
several scholarships each year to students
who submit applications and qualify for
this assistance. A secondary purpose of
our club is to promote fellowship among
members. The many activities and events provide
choices and opportunities for meeting others with
common interests. I hope you will take advantage of
this benefit.
My own history with the club began in 1982 when my
husband, two sons and I moved to Lincoln. A neigh-
bor invited me to join UNL Women’s Club. I par-
ticipated in Newcomers, Piecemakers, and attended
a few of the club’s planned events. I truly enjoyed
meeting women with interests similar to mine.
In the Fall of 1982, I was called to substitute teach
at various schools in the city. This led to a full time
position with Lincoln Public Schools, and teaching
filled my days and sometimes my evenings!
However, things changed in June of 2006 when I
retired. Once again I had time to participate in the
activities of the UNL Women’s Club. I have met
many friends and become active in the organization
during the course of the last seven years. The spirit of
fellowship continues!
The year 2013 begins with the Welcome Luncheon at
President James B. Milliken and Nana Smith’s
home. This is a time to enjoy Nana’s hospitality,
conversation with friends, and meeting new friends.
The Fall Tour includes a stop at the new Pinnacle
Bank Arena, with lunch nearby. The Landing con-
tinues to be a favorite gathering place for
the Fall Brunch. The Fund Raising
Committee has a special event planned
in February at the Country Club of Lin-
coln. In the Spring we will have two
interesting programs. The year will
conclude with the annual Spring Luncheon.
As President I am becoming more aware of the many
hours contributed on behalf of the club by our mem-
bers. The Board, Committee Chairs, Interest Group
Chairs and many committee members share common
goals and devote the time necessary to achieve those
goals. This spirit of teamwork leads to a growing and
vibrant club. Please encourage others to become mem-
bers.
I look forward to serving as your President this year.

President, UNL Women’s Club, 2013-2014

Fall Tour: Pinnacle Arena and Historic Haymarket Wednesday, October 9, 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m
Please join us for travel by bus to the brand-new Pinnacle Bank
Arena, where you will be one of the first to see this state-of-the
art cornerstone of the West Haymarket redevelopment project on
a special private tour.
The Arena is the new home of Husker Basketball and will be a
much larger venue for concerts, family shows, and other events
than Lincoln has had previously. From the outside we have
watched the construction, and now we can see it all: center
stage, executive suites, loge boxes, private lounges, and more.
Following the tour we will have lunch at JTK restaurant at the
train station: your choice of chicken sandwich or steak sand-
wich, with beverage and salad.
Ed Zimmer, City of Lincoln Preservation Planner,
will join us at JTK for an illustrated chat about the Hay-
market in times past, then take us for a short spin on the bus
to see what’s new in the area.
Cost: $30 per person Meet at 9:15 for coffee and snacks at Westminster Pres-
byterian Church parking lot, 2110 Sheridan Blvd.
Bus departs promptly at 9:30 am and returns by
3:00 pm.
RSVP deadline Oct. 1. Space is limited to 47 so sign
up early using the form in this newsletter on page 7.

Entertainment: Master Storyteller/ Entertainer Pippa White, One’s Company
Pippa White calls her One's Company Productions "part theatre, part storytelling, part history." Audiences call them unique,
captivating, and touching. Previously she had an extensive career in theatre and television on the West Coast, including five years
hosting a daily morning television show on ABC in San Francisco. An audience member recently captured the gist of Pippa's
unique presentations when he said, "her performances are entertainment wrapped in history intertwined with inspiration." She
is not to be missed! For more information on Pippa White, visit her website at: http://www.pippawhite1co.com

Newcomers and Friends
Big 10 Women’s Conference
The UNL Women’s Club was represented at the 15th Biennial Conference of Big Ten Women’s
Organizations, held June 7-9 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Delegates Mae
Anne Balschweid and Sally Wei enjoyed getting to know other women from like-minded organiza-
tions throughout the Big 10 Conference. Along with building friendships and finding common
ground with other clubs, they also learned from a variety of presenters, multiple strategies for im-
proving the viability and success of our wonderful club!
The theme of the conference was “Cultivating Winning Strategies.” On Friday evening, all 40 par-
ticipants were treated to a lovely welcome reception hosted by the university president’s wife in the
stately presidential mansion. On Saturday morning, the keynote speaker Dr. Bruce Vojak gave a
fascinating presentation on serial innovators titled “ How Individuals Create and Deliver Break-
through Innovations in Mature Firms; the qualities, personalities, and thinking patterns of successful

Big 10 Conference (continued from Page 4) innovators.” Dr. Vojak’s speech was followed
by four breakout sessions: Leadership; Com-
munications and Technology; Membership
and Newcomers; and Scholarships,
Fundraising and Finance. The
breakout sessions were excellent and
generated many new ideas and
strategies. Saturday afternoon of-
fered a number of optional tours:
either a technology tour of the Blue
Waters & Beckman Institute for
Advanced Science and Technology;
an arts tour of the Spurlock Muse-
um & Krannert Center for the Per-
forming Arts; or a garden tour of
the campus arboretum. The day
was topped off with a gala dinner at
the hotel with entertainment provid-
ed by “The Other Guys,” a small
ensemble of talented young men from the
University Men’s Glee Club.
The conference concluded on Sunday morning
with a business meeting to discuss proposed
changes to the conference bylaws. In addition
to some minor proposals, there was also a pro-
posal for gender neutrality wording in the con-
ference name and bylaws. After a lively discus-
sion, it was voted that the Big 10 Conference
name remain the same until the next confer-
ence. The next conference will be in 2015 and
held at Ohio State University.
The UNL women’s club would like to express
our deep gratitude to Harvey Perlman for
providing the funding necessary to enable our
delegates to attend the conference. The confer-
ence was a valuable and rewarding experience
in forging relationships with other Big 10 uni-
versity women’s clubs as well as providing new
insights and ideas for our club.

TAKE A SEAT FOR THE NIGHT- LIVE/SILENT AUCTION
The fundraising committee is in the process of planning a live/silent auction to be held at the Country Club of Lincoln on
February 6, 2014! The doors will open at 5:30 with the auction beginning at 6:30 – There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres and a
cash bar. The live auction will feature painted Adirondack chairs from UNL colleges/departments as well as local businesses.
Each chair will be a unique collector’s item and will be awarded to the highest bidder at our live auction. There will be an
Adirondack chair signed by our own “Tom Osborne,” one from our new athletic director signed by head coaches, the Col-
lege of Engineering, the Department of Entomology, the Lincoln Airport, and the Saltdogs, just to name a few. Chairs will be
displayed throughout Lincoln prior to the event so keep your eyes open.
We are asking all members of the UNL Women’s Club to support us in our efforts to provide scholarships for our students.
We will need lots and lots of silent auction items for the event. If every person could secure ONE item it would make our
auction a huge success! We have a general donation request letter for local businesses which explains our event. I can email
it to anyone who is interested. Also, we are in need of several gift baskets or decorated boxes to auction off at the event. If
you are willing to donate or secure donations for any of the below baskets, please contact Rhonda Obermeier at
[email protected] or (402) 327-0151. This will keep multiple people from arranging the same theme basket. If you
want us to put together a basket for you just send in $50.00 and we will be happy to arrange it. All baskets/decorated boxes
should have a minimum value of $50.00.
If you are sending a check make it out to UNLWC and mail to: Rhonda Obermeier at 6000 S. 114th St. Lincoln, NE 68526.
