Recommendations

Overall Overall Ian Affleck (UKP) I suggest maintaining a web site with a list of the Killam Professors. To be hosted on the President's website.

1.1Nomination Requirements Ian Affleck (UKP)

Requiring the list of nominators to include at least one student seems reasonable, given the teaching criterion and even requiring it to include at least one alumnus/a seems reasonable since the excellent teacher in question will presumably have been teaching at UBC long enough to have graduated some students. On the other hand, I don't find the requirement that it include at least one staff member appropriate. It could be very difficult to find any staff members able to judge the teaching and research excellence of the nominee. I suppose if the staff member was a post-doctoral fellow working with the nominee, for instance, this might be appropriate in relation to the nominee's mentoring abilities at that level. But conceivably some excellent researchers and teachers might not be working with post-docs at the time of nomination. Furthermore, the post-doc in question would likely be in a conflict of interest situation.

Committee decided that it was important to include all voices in the nomination. This would serve as a 360 degree review.

1.2 Selection CriteriaKiran Mahal (VP, AMS Society)

AMS suports the requirement that candidates demonstrate both research and teaching excellence. This amendment shows UBC's commitment to providing a high quality educational experience for students.

1.2 Selection CriteriaKiran Mahal (VP, AMS Society) AMS supports the clarification of nomination and selection criteria.

1.2 Selection Criteria Sherrill Grace (UKP)

It is not always clear from the proposed language that BOTH teaching and research excellence are required. See 1.2.7 and 8 where “and/or” is used. In my experience it is much more difficult to demonstrate excellence in teaching than it is in research. There are several reasons for this, but one is the competitive evaluative system long in place with many ways of rewarding proven excellence in research. While a few awards exist—both at UBC and nationally—to recognize teaching, these are few. In other words, and for several reasons, as I say, the domains of evaluation are both different and unequal. This matter should be explored further and clarified.

1.2 Selection Criteria Ian Affleck (UKP)

I don't object to including excellent teaching as a criterion. However, I think the balance has gone a bit too far towards teaching in this very long list of criteria. I would suggest a bit of rewriting so that it is clear that research excellence is at least as important as teaching excellence. Also, I think the list could be shortened a bit.

Draft amended to clarify that both research and teaching are relevant.

Page 9: University Killam Professorsbog2.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2012/11/2.6_2012.12... · esteem (for example, Nobel laureate, National Killam Award, Order of Canada for scholarly recognition

Recommendations

1.2.6 Selection CriteriaWilliam New (UKP Emeritus)

Item 1.2.6 refers to "continuing commitment to student success through advising inside and outside the classroom and/or laboratory" While this phrasing applies to most circumstances, I would recommend adding "and/or studio" so that teachers in such schools as Music and Theatre Arts will be eligible for the Professorship.

Draft amended to add reference to studio.

2

Advisory Committee - composition

Kiran Mahal (VP, AMS Society)

AMS says there should be undergraduate and graduate student representation on the advisory committee. There should also be consideration of an advisory committee representative with expertise in teaching excellence and innovation.

Draft amended to require a student to be part of the committee. Excellence in teaching is covered by UKPs on committee.

2.3

Advisory Committee - balance and diversity Sherrill Grace (UKP)

I also think the language in 2.3 needs either some clarification in the policy or some guidelines for the advisory committee that would be charged with the practical task of taking such a statement into account. What is actually intended here? A ratio? A Faculty by Faculty distribution that leaves a very large Faculty (like Arts) with the same number of potential Killam Profs as a tiny Faculty with less disciplinary diversity?

2.3

Advisory Committee - balance and diversity

William New (UKP Emeritus)

item 2.3: I approve of balance and diversity among fields, but I do not think that the Professorships should be distributed on some absolute and inflexible arithmetic or percentage basis.

3 Number of UKPsKiran Mahal (VP, AMS Society)

AMS supports the cap on # of UKPs to reflect the current size and state of the institution.

3.2 Number of UKPsDavid Dolphin (UKP Emeritus)

The value and prestige of the University Killam Professorships result from their very limited number. As you increase the number you decrease their value. I would find that even doubling the number would be extreme but would bring UBC in line with Harvard (24 University Professors) MIT (13) and Berkeley (19). David feels 2% is acceptable; he originally said it was too high, but he misread the policy and thought it was 2% of all faculty.

3.2 Number of UKPs Ian Affleck (UKP)

I don't object to increasing the number of Killam Professors. Arguably it dilutes the honour a bit. On the other hand, it has so far been a nearly invisible honour since there has been little publicity associated with it.

No changes made to the 2%. Once commentators realized this was only for full professors and max is 18, current language was accepted. The last sentence in section 1.1 will be placed in a separate paragraph (so

Committee decided that it was important that committee was able to deal with this on its own. No changes made.

Page 10: University Killam Professorsbog2.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2012/11/2.6_2012.12... · esteem (for example, Nobel laureate, National Killam Award, Order of Canada for scholarly recognition

3.2 Number of UKPsPatricia Baird (UKP Emeritus)

My only comment is that if the number awarded is 2% of faculty it devalues the prestige of what has been a fairly uncommon distinction. I would not be in favour of that number for that reason. Patricia then followed up to say: I think when you get beyond half a dozen it is not such a significant honour. I look forward to hearing what is decided.

3.2 Number of UKPs Sherrill Grace (UKP)How does 3.2 work in conjunction with 2.3 and 3.1? If I were to sit on advisory committee I would want clarification on these clauses.

3.3 Number of UKPs Sherrill Grace (UKP)How would the “extraordinary circumstances” mentioned in 3.3 be defined and how determined—that is, by whom?

President will determine what is considered extraordinary.

4Roles and Reponsibilities

William New (UKP Emeritus) Approves of lecture and meeting of UKPs - excellent ideas.

5 Emeritus Status Chris Eaton

• The granting of emeritus status at UBC is governed by the Senate under Senate Policy V-250 (and O-250 at UBCO) (referred to below as V/O-250).• If we provide for “emeritus” status under Policy 57, that means we would have 2 ways at UBC of achieving Emeritus status.• I do not object to emeritus status for University Killam Professors (UKP) being dealt with in Policy 57, but V/O-250 are currently being revised (Sept/Oct) and we could add the Killam Professorship piece to V/0-250. Then Policy 57 could refer to V/O-250. It would say something to the effect of: “If a faculty member is a UKP at the time he or she retires, he or she will no longer be a UKP but will be entitled to refer to himself or herself as UKP Emeritus/a.”• We also discussed that the likelihood of someone being UKP Emeritus without being a Professor Emeritus is quite unlikely.• Finally, there is inconsistency in how emeriti refer to themselves: we have seen “ UKP Emeritus”, “UKP, Professor Emeritus of …”. As well, “Emeritus” should follow the title, not precede the title – in Policy 57, it incorrectly provides “Emeritus UKP” – it should provide “UKP Emeritus”.

5 Emeritus Status Sherrill Grace (UKP)

I think we can allow greater flexibility on 5.1 and 5.2. Some recently—and for that matter not so recently—retired Killam Profs are very active and as excellent as ever. I would like to see them eligible to give a Killam Lecture (4.2) as well as serving on the Cttee of UKPs. There’s a pool of major talent here that we’ve been slow to recognize and draw on.

Committee determined that Emeriti would stand; and that the committee in 4.3 would not include UKP Emeriti. Committee considered this issue carefully; and while UKP Emeriti continue to be valuable members of UBC's community, the Committee of UKPs should be comprised of those engaged in their professorial duties on a full-time basis.

separate paragraph (so it is easy to see that only full professors qualify).

5 Emeritus Status Sherrill Grace (UKP)

Retaining the title of UKP is, to my mind, very important. Other top universities encourage their named profs to keep the title active. We should too. I would personally be very disappointed to see mine—which means a great deal—watered down.

5 Emeritus StatusWilliam New (UKP Emeritus)

Often Emeriti University Killam Professors are still engaged in ongoing academic or creative activity. Some thought might be given to engaging them in university activities, recognizing them (along with current holders of the appointment) whenever appropriate, providing ongoing project funds (especially useful in the Arts, where travel and research funding tends to dry up after retirement, even though invitations from abroad and elsewhere in Canada do continue), etc.
