George Springmeyer, Lee Devane, Clyde Ambrose. You may not recognize some of these names, however, they have a distinction that I am about to share. I am privileged and honored to become the 4th Pompano Beach Power Squadron Commander to serve two terms. Having been here before is a distinct advantage, as I somewhat know what to expect. There will be a crisis or two that arises, disagreements, and celebrations. The 59th Change of Watch was held January 21st at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. Thank you to all who attended and assisted. Thank you to Bob Garito for photographing the event. Thank you Bill Pringle and Ron LaFontaine for assisting as color guard. Thank you Richard Walker for being the event MC. Thank you Denise Porter for being the Ancient Mariner ceremony MC. And, many thanks to D/C Al Furtado for the outstanding job he did in conducting the Change of Watch ceremony. A special thank you to our members who donated items or assisted with preparations for the Change of Watch: the Babins, Pat Bellin, the Bruderers, the Chosids, P/C Tom Nolan, and the Sparlings. Thanks to Pat Nolan for preparing the programs. Thank you Barbara Garito, Pat Nolan and Pat Bellin for creating the centerpieces. Pat Bellin for organizing table assignments, proofreading, mailing donation requests, organizing guest lists, and moral support. Registration table and raffle volunteers: Barbara Garito, Kay Baker, Margaret McGrath, Susan Rotun, and Beth TenBrink. Thank you to last year’s bridge: Administrative Officer Ronnie Babin, Educational Officer Robert Ellis, Secretary Pat Nolan, and Treasurer Kathryn Pringle for a job well done. A special thank you to P/C Tom Nolan, SN. He leaves the Squadron in very good shape. Thanks for all the effort put forth in organizing and planning events, working with insurance issues and keeping the Squadron moving forward. Thank you for bringing in the guest speakers for the dinner meetings. The Change of Watch could not have happened without the assistance of Squadron volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization and were instrumental in the planning and organizing of this event. Please thank them and recognize their contribution. Our members have shown that they are willing and able to volunteer for any activity or event in which our squadron is participating. Whether it is a boat show, nautical flea market, attending District and National USPS events, or assisting at dinner meetings and Thirsty Thursdays, our members are never hesitant to volunteer. One Merit Mark each year is the only reward that USPS gives to volunteers. It isn’t much, but it is something that you can be proud of. It signifies that you care about our squadron and the ideals of the USPS. There will be many opportunities to volunteer in the upcoming year. Please participate in as many squadron activities as you can. The annual Pompano Beach & Lighthouse Point Nautical Flea Market was held at the Community Park on January 21 and 22. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered and who assisted with: merchandise pricing, loading, transporting, setting up, manning the site, taking down, and loading and transporting unsold merchandise back to the Squadron.

Our primary objective is to provide boating safety instruction to our community and members. Our squadron offers almost every course that is recommended by USPS. There is a vast amount of boating knowledge that is available through our classes. If you haven’t taken a class lately, check out our schedule of offerings. Our courses are constantly being updated. With the rapid advances in technology, a refresher course might be in order. Volunteer, take a class, come to dinner meetings, or join us at a scheduled function. I have been given bridge officers and assistants who are, and will be proficient and dedicated to their office. Thank you all for volunteering to assist and counsel me during this next year, and to keep the squadron vibrant and vital. Our 2017 Bridge: Executive Officer-Steve Izzi, Administrative Officer-Dave Persing, Educational Officer-Robert Ellis, Secretary-Ed McGrath, and Treasurer-Kathryn Pringle. I hope to see all of you at our events this year!

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE

Lt/C David Persing, JN

From the ground up..

First and foremost I would like to thank Rich Walker, Ronnie Babin, Tom Nolan, and Marshall Belin for their help in getting me started. Even though I was Treasurer a few years ago the responsibilities are different and now I get to learn a lot more about the building- among other things. I have no fear that if I am ever in a quandary these same guys will step forward and point me in the right direction, as they would anyone in a new position.

By now you have heard of the very successful COW and all the relevant doings. Another great night. If you weren't there, you shudda been there. I can hardly wait until next year. I hear that Ronnie Babin may have one or more breakfasts at the LHPYC. They were successful and enjoyable event. If you would like more, tell someone on the Bridge and maybe we can get 'er done.

Speaking of eating, the Feb dinner (2/9) will feature eggplant with baked ziti & sausage (roast chicken too, if you so designate when confirming your reservation on the phone). The chefs for this dinner are: Howard and Susan Rotun. For your added culinary pleasure, Anita Walker is also going to make a homemade cannoli, trust me, they are very good! Please don't forget to thank all the chefs and helpers for their effort. Also, if you are lucky enough to be a server please tell Dave Persing so you get credit for a merit mark.

Next months, Mar. 9th dinner will be-yep- corned beef and cabbage with boiled potatoes and trimmings hosted by Anita & Rich Walker, and Tom Nolan- had to get an Irish guy in there. Merrily Sparling is going to make Irish baked beans and soda bread too. Again, roasted chicken if ordered with your reservation.

The April,13th dinner will prepare you for income tax day with a down-home comfort food of red beans and rice, chicken alternative, with the usual Cajun accoutrements, etc., cooked by Ronnie Babin

There are those among us that will say that the Bridge always gets their pickins of the good jobs/ positions. Well I almost did it. Bill Pringle our master bartender, needs an assistant. Further, he and Kathryn will be away during May, June and July dinner meetings and we will be in a pinch, then, too for additional help. Please see either Bill, or Dave Persing to enlist.

Pompano Beach checked our water back flow system on Jan. 30 and all is well.

Please check elsewhere for details in regards to the garage sale being arranged by Barb Garito. Your donations will be greatly appreciated. Please chip in if you can.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE

Lt/C Steve Izzi, S

I am proud to have been elected to the position of Executive Officer in the Pompano Beach Power Squadron for 2017. This position and duties are all new to me so I ask for your patience and forgiveness up front. I will gladly welcome any advice or suggestions from any member of our squadron. One of my responsibilities, among others, will be to coordinate outside activities for the Pompano Beach Power Squadron. In the future I hope to be active and helpful in organizing events and working with committees and chair persons to nourish the strengths and increase the participation level and growth of the Pompano Beach Power Squadron. I look forward to working with everyone to achieve this goal. One event that has already taken place with great success was the Pompano Beach Nautical Flea Market. This event was organized and orchestrated by Ronnie Babin and a very helpful cast of characters who spent a lot of time and energy to add to the effort. Thanks to Ronnie Babin and crew for taking the lead on the project.

BRIDGE REPAIR TO CLOSE NEW RIVER NAVIGATION IN FEBRUARY

Coast Guard authorizes Ft. Lauderdale New River waterway to close for 12 days in February

The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized the closure of the New River to navigation west of downtown Ft. Lauderdale from Feb. 11 to 23 during maintenance of the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) railroad bridge. “The deviation to the bridge operating schedule is necessary to perform major bridge repairs,” USCG spokesman Jonathan Lally said today. “And this deviation allows the bridge to remain in closed-to-navigation position.”

The maintenance is part of All Aboard Florida, a high-speed passenger rail service to run between Miami and Orlando, using the Brightline train service. “This temporary closure is necessary to avoid longer closures in the future,” Lally said. “We’re working closely with the construction company and local mariners to minimize impact to local waterway users.”

Current work on the bridge includes replacement of the machinery and electrical system and minor rehabilitation of the steel. And work during the navigation closure includes milling the two outer trunnions in place and removal of the trunnion base for repair off-site. The trunnion milling work will be performed 24 hours per day until completed, according to a statement from All Aboard Florida. The river is closed to navigation from 12:01 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 11 through 12:01 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 23.
