The preliminary geomagnetic data included here is rnade available t o s c i en t i f i c personnel and organizstions as part of a cooperative e f for t and on a data exchange basis because of the ear ly need by some users. To avoid delay, a l l of the data is copied from original forms processed a t the observatory; therefore it should be regarded as preliminary, Inquiries a b u t this report or about the College Observatory should be addressed to:

GEOMAGNETIC DATA
Normal., Storm and Rapid Rum magnetograms and appropriate cal ibrat ion data a re processed dai ly st the observatory and axe available for analysis o r copyinq. Also available, are mean houxljr scalings, K-Indices, selected magnetic phenomena reports and on a real-time basis are recordings from a 3-compo- nent f l u g a t e magnetometer and F-component proton mgnetometer . Fhgnetic Activity
The K-Index: The K-Index is a logarithmic measure- ment of the rrnge of the mmdst disturbed component (D or H) of the geomagnetic field for eight intervals beginning 0000-0300, 0300-0600,.2100-2400 IJT. I t is a measure of the difference between the highest and Lowest deviation from a smooth curve t o be expected for s component on a magnetically quiet day, wfthin s three hour interval .
The Equivalent @fly Amplitude, AK: The K-Index f s converted i n to an equivalent range, ak, which is near the center of the lfmiting garmna ranges for a given K. The average of the eight values is called equivalent dai ly amplitude AK. The u n i t I@ has been chosen so as not t o give the i l l u s ion of an accuracy not jus t i f ied .

The hZegnet1e Daily Character Figure, C : To each Universal day a character is assigned on the basis C=0, if it is quiet; C = l , i f it 1s maderately disturbed; C=2p i f i t fs great ly disturbed. The method used to assign characters a t the College Observatory is based on AK as follows:

Routine assignment of C was discontinued st College on January 1, 1476.
OBSERVATORY L O C A T I O N
The College Observatory, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, is Located a t the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska. It is near the Auroral Zone and the northern l i m i t of the world's greatest earthquake be l t , the circwn-Pacific Seismic 5elt. Although the observatory's basic operation i s i n geo- magnetism and seismalogy, i t cooperates with other s c i en t i s t s and organizations i n areas where the faeil- i t y and personnel can be of service.
The observatory is one of three opersted by the USGS i n Alaska. The others are located a t brraw and S i t l a .

Selected Phenomena L Outstandfng Magnetic Effects Prior to January 1, 1976, %he Norm1 and Kapid
R u n records were reviewed st the observatory for selected mgnetic phenomena and the events ident i f ied were formrded t o the IUCC Commission on Magnetic Variations and Disturbances. T h i s m s discontinued on January 1, 1976, but a report on Outstanding Mgnetfc Effects is prepared monthly far this report.
Principsl Magnetic Storms Gradual m d sudden commencement magnet1 c d i s t u r -
bances with st leas t one K-Index of 5 or greater, which a re believed to be part of s world-w5de disturbance, are classified as principal mgnetic storms, The t ine of the storm beginning and end-; direct ion and amplitude of sudden comencements; period of maximum ac t iv i ty ; and storm range a r e reported. MonthLy reports of these data are forwarded to the World Data Center A i n &ulder, Colorado.
kgnetogram Hourly Scalings Mametomam hourl~ searims are averages for
successive of one hour-for the D, H and z elements. The Value i n the column headed "01" is the average for the hour beginning 0000 and ending 0100. Note that the values on the scaling sheets a r e in tenths of mm with t h e decimal point omitted. The user of these sealings should keep in mind tha t the tabular values a r e hourly means and i f he is interested in the detailed morphology of the magnetic f i e ld , he should re fe r d i rec t ly t o the magnetogrms.
Magnetograms The n o m l magnetograms in t h i s report are repro-
duced a t about one-thfrd the s i ze of the orlgfnals. Preliminary base-line values and scale values adopted f o r use d t h the original magnetograms are included. For days when the mgnetic f i e ld is too disturbed for the Normal maipetogram t o be readable, Storm magnetograms are reproduced.
Absolutes, Base-lines and Scale Values To determine the sbsolute value of the mgnetic
f i e ld from the hourly means or from point scalings the following equations should be used:
%, % and BZ are base-line values; SD, % and SZ are scale values; and d , h and z are scalings i n millimeters.
