As we enter the Lenten journey, let us
“lean in” to get to know God and Jesus
better.
From THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Earth to earth,
People: Ashes to ashes,
Leader: From dust we were created,
People: And to dust we shall return.
Leader: From the dust and ashes of our
lives,
People: Create again, O Lord.
Leader: Create in us clean hearts, O
God.
People: And renew your free spirit
within us.
From THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
One: Lord, all year we try to avoid dust
and ash.
All: Dust is the homes we have failed to
clean and our broken dreams long
abandoned. Ash is the world engulfed
in flames and ancient bodies in
unmarked graves.
One: Lord, all year we try to avoid dust
and ash.
All: But here we are. And here you are.
And it is Wednesday. And we face
reality.
One: And you insist dust and ash be
pressed to our flesh.
All: Breath again, Lord, and command
us fragile failures to walk on. Lord, let
us remember it all – dust and ash, death
and deliverance,
One: And especially you.
All: Amen.
INVITATION TO LENTEN DISCIPLINE
Dear sisters in Christ:
The early Christians observed with
great devotion the days of our Lord’s
passion and resurrection, and it became
the custom of the Church that before the
Easter celebration there should be a
forty-day season of spiritual
preparation.
During this season, converts to the faith
were prepared for holy baptism. It was
also a time when persons who had
committed serious sins and had
separated themselves from the
community of faith were reconciled by
penitence and forgiveness, and restored
to participation in the life of the Church.
In this way the whole congregation was

reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in
the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to
renew our faith.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to
observe a holy Lent: by self-examination and
repentance; by prayer; fasting, and self-denial; and by
reading and meditating on God’s Holy Word. To
make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark
of our mortal nature, let us now bow before our
Creator and Redeemer.
Joel 2:12-17 The Message (MSG)
Change Your Life
12 But there’s also this, it’s not too late—
GOD’s personal Message!—
“Come back to me and really mean it!
Come fasting and weeping, sorry for your sins!” 13-14 Change your life, not just your clothes.
Come back to GOD, your God.
And here’s why: God is kind and merciful.
He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot,
This most patient God, extravagant in love,
always ready to cancel catastrophe.
Who knows? Maybe he’ll do it now,
maybe he’ll turn around and show pity.
Maybe, when all’s said and done,
there’ll be blessings full and robust for your GOD! 15-17 Blow the ram’s horn trumpet in Zion!
Declare a day of repentance, a holy fast day.
Call a public meeting.
Get everyone there. Consecrate the congregation.
Make sure the elders come,
but bring in the children, too, even the nursing
babies,
Even men and women on their honeymoon—
interrupt them and get them there.
Between Sanctuary entrance and altar,
let the priests, GOD’s servants, weep tears of
repentance.
Let them intercede: “Have mercy, GOD, on your
people!
Don’t abandon your heritage to contempt.
Don’t let the pagans take over and rule them
(Continued from page 1) and sneer, ‘And so where is this God of theirs?’”
Job Worships God
I Babbled On About Things Far Beyond Me
42 1-6 Job answered GOD:
“I’m convinced: You can do anything and everything.
Nothing and no one can upset your plans.
You asked, ‘Who is this muddying the water,
ignorantly confusing the issue, second-guessing
my purposes?’
I admit it. I was the one. I babbled on about things far
beyond me,
made small talk about wonders way over my head.
You told me, ‘Listen, and let me do the talking.
Let me ask the questions. You give the answers.’
I admit I once lived by rumors of you;
now I have it all firsthand—from my own eyes and
ears!
I’m sorry—forgive me. I’ll never do that again, I
promise!
I’ll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of
rumor.”
As we journey to the cross this Lenten season let us
“LEAN into JESUS! He is a great help in times of
troubles and will always walk by your side.
Take care and God Bless. Holly Cyrus

A Moment of Silence
We lost a wonderful sister on Monday morning, March 13. Candy
Wyand was called home to be with her Lord after a long battle with
cancer. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She pos-
sessed a strength and determination that many of us only hope to
achieve. Even in her darkest times, she knew whose child she was.
She had an unshakeable faith in her Lord and never doubted that He
was walking with her through this journey, surrounding her with His
unfailing love.
She was so active in her church life at Seaville UMC. She was a youth group leader and
was always there to lend a helping hand with the Cape Atlantic District youth. She helped out with
beach volleyball during the summer months. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School
for many years. She went on many mission trips with not only
Seaville UMC but others, as well, being the hands and feet in Missis-
sippi, in Kentucky, and in Atlantic City. She was an active member
of the Seaville United Methodist Women. Although not able to at-
tend monthly meetings all the time because of family commitments
(which were always a priority in her life above all else), she never
failed to attend any activity or function the UMW was involved with
– everything from bake sales to yard sales to district events. She was
a very creative person, making many of the centerpieces and table
favors for our UMW dinners throughout the years. She never held
an office in the local unit of UMW but was very supportive to those
that did. She heard God calling her several years ago and, after searching her heart, stepped up to
be the treasurer of the Cape Atlantic District UMW, even though she was receiving cancer treat-
ments. While her time in that job was cut short, she was an inspiration and an asset to the group
and the entire district. She was always there, willing to do anything asked of her. She was very
involved with Girl Scouts, passing along much wisdom to the girls over the years. No matter what
she did or what she was involved in, she gave it 100%
of her time and effort.
She was a shining example of what it is to be a
child of God, a woman of faith, a servant of the Lord.
She will be sorely missed, but her light will continue
on in everyone whose lives she touched. We are sad-
dened that you are no longer with us, but we know that
you are dancing with your heavenly Father. RIP
Pretty Lady, until we meet again . . .

Hebrews 11:1-3 New Revised Standard Version 1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2Indeed, by faith our an-
cestors received approval. 3By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so
that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.
I greet you dear Sisters in Christ, with the assurance that things hoped for will carry us
through the journey of our “PURPOSE”.
The United Methodist Women are called for a “PURPOSE” and we share the blessing of our
faith in God through mission programs. It is not a mistake that we are in mission work for love of
God. Our works through faith and love of God will never be in vain.
As I pondered on what I would like to share with you in this newsletter, Hebrews 11 kept
falling into my spirit.
The United Methodist Women “PURPOSE” was certainly begun by our ancestors on a foun-
dation of faith. Even though they didn’t see where we would be today, their works in mission con-
tinued. We must continue this same faith and dedication to continue the purpose as a foundation
for the coming generations.
As I hear and read the news of today, it is disturbing. However, we have the assurance that
God is in control of everything. We may not understand how so many horrific things can be hap-
pening. In reading Hebrews Chapter 11, we are assured that God is faithful. Continuing news of
“Riots, Human Trafficking, Immigration Difficulties”, to name a few must not deter our determina-
tion to help where and when we can through our assurance that God is in control and we are His
instruments of faith and peace. Speak out, Speak up, Stand up for what you believe.
As you reflect on Hebrews 11:1-3, check out the “Mission Today” criteria, check how many
of the items your UMW unit is doing. Become a 5-Star and “Mission Today” unit. Three “Mission
Today” reports have been received for the year 2016. I look forward to receiving many more.
Recognitions will be given at the 2017 District Annual Fall Breakfast Meeting. Have you started on
your missions for 2017?
UMW strive to lead and teach through the regular ‘School of Missions’ held each year and
‘the local district officer training gathering. Make it your personal purpose to be informed and a
part of what is happening through our United Methodist Women organization, locally and/or glob-
ally. All information is available on our web site: www.CapeAtlanticDistrictUmw.org -Check it out.
Did you know that through our works in mission, we are constantly showing our faith of what
God will do for ourselves and others? With hope, our relationship with God gives us the assur-

“Sing and Smile and Pray”
I am certain many of you will remember this
chorus from Sunday School Days or perhaps
you may have checked it out on Utube. Written
in 1934 by husband and wife team Virgil and
Blanche Brock, the easily memorized lyrics offer
a profound message for all ages and makes it
certainly appropriate for today’s world
environment.
This chorus is the foundation for our Spiritual
Day Apart 2017. You are invited to fill your car
with members and friends and join us at Trinity
UMC, Marmora to share a day of musical joy
that will hopefully have your toes “a-tapping",
scriptures that will lighten your troubles and
concerns, a wonderful meal, great fellowship
and a challenge to take back to your church
family, your personal family, and even strangers
that you will meet in the days ahead.
Checking a large concordance, I found that
Scriptures contain many references regarding
the first word SING, many of them in the
beautiful musical lyrics of the Book of Psalms -
the songs of David. Checking the word PRAY in
that same resource, there are many, many,
more references to this third word in the song.
However, no mention of the word SMILE. But,
how can we truly sing and pray to the Trinity,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, without a smile
coming to our own faces – the best witness to
others begins with a pleasing countenance – in
short a smile. There is nothing as disappointing
for a choir singing praise and leading worship,
looking out at the congregation and this is what
they see
If we plan to include the dimension of Joy in our
worship it means we need to share the
appropriate
Do you have a favorite chorus that will help us
set the stage for our celebration? Send it to me
and we will try to add it to our menu of music! Do
you have a favorite scripture verse that will
broaden our reference materials – send it on
and it will be added to the bibliography that will
be available for all of us.
Before our time together is concluded, we will be
armed with a positive attitude and appearance –
where’s that smile, a song for all to hear and
prayer that flows from our hearts and our
mouths. The famed writer Alfred Tennyson
wrote, "More things are wrought by prayer than
this world dreams of".
See you April 22nd ...
come early,
register, greet one another and be
ready to “Sing and Smile and Pray"!

Freedom Schools for Literacy
In the 60s, Freedom Schools were temporary, alternative free schools for African Americans mostly in the South to achieve social, political and economic equality in the United States. The curriculum was developed by citizens of different backgrounds and origins and consisted of three different sections: Academic consisting of reading, writing, and verbal activities; Citizenship to en-courage students to ask about the society; and Recreational which required the student to be physically active.
Today’s Freedom Schools concentrate on tutoring children grades K-8 (and some adults) in liter-acy and reading enrichment at little or no cost to participants. This venture with minor costs can be successful when schools are under the leadership of local churches; have access to tutors (English and Spanish) from colleges and universities as extracurricular benefits, current and re-tired teachers, and other volunteers; and receive financial and/in-kind support (meals, books, etc.). Some programs are incorporated in children’s church bible schools.
The impetus for this project is based on the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® Program and support by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) project Teaching Tolerance. In the spring of 2013, SPLC published an article entitled “No School Like Freedom School” and re-ported that “last summer, more than 11,300 students were served through CDF Freedom Schools sponsored by schools, churches and nonprofit organizations at 177 sites in 82 cities across the country.”
Freedom Schools in some form exist in New Jersey and surrounding areas. My colleague and I met in January on this topic with Emmaus UMC and Oasis UMC pastors and Stockton University officials and learned about their Homework Completion Program partnered with the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic City Housing Authority! In Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Free-dom Schools (PFS) existed from 2008 through 2014 as well as the start of their Servant-Leadership in Action program under the project. Although these programs were initiated to ad-vance minority children, they have provided services to children of all ethnicities.
I believe this practice can be initiated throughout New Jersey and continue in our nation until there is a significant (if not total) increase of students who score at or above “proficient” by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). To view our disappointing reading scores in the United States, visit NCES website https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/ataglance.asp for data such as the following (The Condition of Education at a Glance, Elementary and Secondary Education, Read-

ing Performance, Percentage of students who scored at or above Proficient):
I am interested in initiating tutoring for reading enhancement as a community service project to honor similar efforts by the Greater New Jersey United Methodist Women and my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. My colleagues and I have planned efforts, with surprising results, to encourage churches, elementary and secondary schools, and universities to estab-lish sufficient partnerships, commitments, and brainstorming to initiate Freedom Schools in New Jersey and “replace the cradle-to-prison pipeline with cradle-to-college track.” [CDF Free-dom Schools® motto].
As we meet with different organizations, it is so very satisfying to find interest and in a few cases already established projects that we can check off the list! And, we plan to promote their efforts. If you are approached, will you join us? Better yet, will you consider setting up a project in your community and write to me of your success?

Well here we are again. I told you in the last
newsletter that I have been doing a bible study
called "War Room" and that the biggest decision
to grow closer to God is to put God first in
everything I do. To pray, meditate, read the
Word, praise, worship, and learn more about
Him every day. To learn what he wants from me,
my purpose. Then work to fulfill my purpose the
best I can. And to that end I would be evaluating
myself on a monthly basis to see how I am doing
both personally and how I am fulfilling the duties
of my jobs/positions.
Well you know what? Just trying to fulfill the
duties of my positions, Communication
Coordinators for CAD UMW and GNJ UMW, and
Port Elizabeth UMW President I can't help but
learn where God is working, and what He wants
me / us to do. Because you know where God is
working is where we should be working, it's as
simple as that. It's kind of like when I became a
Sunday School Teacher. I wanted to do a good
job, after all I was teaching young minds about
GOD. So, I studied the lesson, worked through
the lesson, read the scripture, read all the
information concerning the lesson, did the craft
that was supplied for the lesson, and then
presented it to the class. Wow, did I learn a lot
teaching those kids about God or I guess I
should say do learn a lot since I am still involved
with the Sunday School.
Talking about Sunday School, we are currently
working on creating daily prayer journals in my
Sunday School class. Lent is a time to repent,
pray, fast, and live a simple life all in order to
grow closer to God. We talked about them giving
something up for Lent. Or doing something
special for someone during Lent. Not just to give
it up or do the special task but to remember
when you’re wanting that item that you can't
have, or doing that task that you don't usually
do, WHY. To think about Jesus and what he did
for us, and what he did because of us. He died
on that cross for MY sins. He died on that cross
for YOUR sins. Trying to make them understand
at their different levels (ages). So we are
creating individual prayer journals for them to
learn to pray every day, not just at the table
before they eat or before going to bed at night.
And also to teach them (something a lot of
adults need to learn also) that prayer is not only
about asking God for things you want.
Again, you know I actually learn more than the
students just trying to understand the whole
concept of what I am trying to teach and creating
the supplies needed to be successful. So in the
process of giving the youth something to do to
help them understand what praying is about aka
the prayer journal, I am thinking that it is
something I would like to do also as part of my
daily worship. And looking for different kinds of
prayer journals the youth might be interested in
for each different age group, I found a wealth of
information to draw from for myself. Look for
yourself just go to http://www.pinterest.com and
search prayer journal.
Anyway, to get back to where God is working,
you need to look around you and SEE where
God is working. There are easy ways for us
(United Methodist Women) to do this, we can go
to www.unitedmethodistwomen.org and take a
look at the issues listed under Advocacy, we can
read Response Magazine, we can go for training
to a LDD event, we can go to Mission U, and we
can go to the special events given by GNJ UMW
or CAD UMW on these special topics. Please
take a look at the flyers included in this

newsletter to see what is coming up.
Talking about the events given by our CAD
UMW, the last one was the CAD Officers
training given on February 4th at Seaville UMC.
In attendance were 25 United Methodist
Women. We had breakfast, had a presentation
on the CAD website (found at
www.CapeAtlanticDistrictUMW.org), received
new vital information from our President Holly
Cyrus, and then broke into position groups to
learn what is new or help understand where to
find, how to do, or what are the functions of your
job. And if you didn't
currently have a job you
could go sit in on any of the
positions you might want to
know more about. At the
end of the day we took a
CAD picture for the Box ‘Em
Up campaign to help stop
human trafficking. We
decorated the boxes with
pretty paper and colored
markers right before we took
the picture. What a great day it was. Thank you
so much for hosting us Seaville UMC.
Be sure to read Fran Hagins’ article on page 5
about the next event the CAD UMW is
presenting on April 22 at Trinity UMC Marmora,
and see the flyer on
page 12.
HOSTING! That brings up another topic that as
United Methodist Women, and Pastors as the
heads of your local churches United Methodist
Women, we need to be in prayer about. Hosting
is very important. Without a Host there is no
place for us to meet to share our purpose, to get
to know each other, to grow in Christ, and to
participate in missions. Even though you can
participate in mission just in your local
communities, remember God's community is the
whole world.
United Methodist Women members are
steadfast in our PURPOSE. We organize for
growth to continue mission to women, children
and youth. In Acts 2, the early church was
devoted to growing in Jesus Christ, meeting
needs and joining
in fellowship. As a
result their
numbers grew.
Devotion,
fellowship and
attention to needs
of women, children
and youth are central to United Methodist
Women’s growth.
If the depths of relationships and our
commitment to one another are so important to
God, then having a place where our members
can participate together as directly as possible
must be important also.
Be part of a dynamic group of women who are
learning, growing spiritually and sharing their
faith through hosting the few events that we hold
each year or the team meetings held about 4

Acts 2:44-47 New International Version 44

Every day they continued to meet

times a year. Get connected with women who
are giving of themselves in personal
relationships with other women and who are
giving of themselves in a personal relationship
with God. I challenge you to get in touch with
one of the CAD team and set up your church as
a host for one of the events next year, especially
if it has been awhile since you last hosted a
CAD event.
Sometimes, hosting or joining in on an event is
where God speaks to you and tells you where
he wants you to go next. I personally have
learned about things happening right here in
(Continued from page 9) New Jersey
that I would
never have
believed, for
example
human
trafficking.
Because that
happens in a
foreign countries not in America and especially
not in New Jersey.
Anyway I'll be praying for all of you, I hope you'll
be praying for us too. I send you all blessings for
the journey.
