Thank You, O God, for keeping us alive and enabling us to reach this day.

Thank You for loved ones and friends who mean so much to us.

Thank You for the teachings and traditions of Judaism which help us to live

kindly and proudly as Jews.

Thank You for this congregation where we join with other Jews on Rosh

Hashanah.

May the prayers that we offer and the thoughts that we think here today help

us to feel closer to You and to our people all over the world.

May they help us also to use every day wisely in the year ahead.

V’ha’arev na Adonai eloheinu et divrei Torat’cha b’finu, uv’fi amm’cha beit Yisra’el,

v’lom’dei Toratcha lishmah. Baruch attah Adonai, ha-m’lammeid Torah l’ammo Yisrael.

Eternal Our God, make the words of your Torah sweet to us and to the House of

Israel, Your people, that we and our children may be lovers of Your name and

students of Your Torah.

We praise you, God, Teacher of Torah to Your People Israel.

A midrash tells a story about Adam and Eve. They once said to God:

When You created light and darkness, You said that they were good.

When you created the seas and the dry land, You said that they were

good. When you created the plants and the animals, You said that they

were good.

But when You created us in Your image, You did not say that we were

good. Why, God?

God replied: You are different from everything else in the universe.

When I created man and woman I left you incomplete.

God has given us the gift of free will, so that we can complete

ourselves. As we work together to finish the work of creation, we and

God will get to know each other. And that is very good indeed.

This section of the service, the Verses of Song, includes

selections from the Book of Psalms. Found in the Writings section

of the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible), the Book of Psalms is a

collection of 150 poems that were written over a thousand years

ago. They were for religious services in the Temple, and many of

them were composed by King David and his son King Solomon. It’s

amazing to think that when we recite these words, we are

following along in a tradition that is thousands of years old!

A Psalm to Sing for the Sabbath Day.

It is good to give thanks to the Eternal, to praise Your name, God beyond all,

Eternal God, as the new year begins,

We have come together to pray as a congregation,

Yet each of us stands alone in Your presence.

Each of us comes before You with special hopes and dreams;

Each of us has personal fears and concerns.

Each of us has a prayer no one else can utter;

Each of us brings praise no one else can offer.

Each of us feels a joy no one else can share;

Each of us has regrets which others cannot know.

And so, we pray:

If we are weary, give us strength.

If we are discouraged, give us hope.

If we have forgotten how to pray, teach us anew;

If we have been careless of time, forgive us.

If our hearts have been chilled by indifference,

Warm them with Your mercy and inspire us.

Adonai our God, You show Your love by giving us Torah. Torah is your most

precious gift to the Jewish people. Adonai our God, we show our love for you by

bringing Torah into our lives.

Love the Eternal your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your

them on the doorposts of your home and at your gates!

This will happen if you listen carefully to My commands which I give you today,

to love and to serve the Eternal your God with all your heart and all your soul. I

shall then give your land rain at the right time, the autumn rain and the spring

rain, so that each one of you can harvest your own grain, wine and oil. I shall also

give grass in your fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

Take care that your heart is not deceived into straying, obeying other gods and

worshipping them. God’s anger will then blaze out against you. God will shut up

the sky. There will be no rain. The land will not produce, and you will quickly be

destroyed from the good land which God gives you. So put these words of Mine

in your heart and in your soul, and secure them as a sign upon your hand and as

reminders before your eyes. Teach them to your children, and talk about them

‘when you sit each of you in your home, and when you walk in the street, when

you lie down and when you rise up. Write them on the doorposts of your home

and at your gates.’ Then you and your children may live long on the land that God

promised to give your ancestors as long as there is a sky over the earth.

True is Your word forever. It is true that the God is our Ruler; the strength of

Jacob, the defender of our safety. God lasts from generation to generation. You

You always helped our ancestors. In every generation You were the shield and

God has many names. Sometimes, God is Adonai. This means ‘my Lord’ and reminds

us that God is a mighty ruler. Sometimes, God is Shechinah. This means ‘dwelling’

and reminds us that God can be found all around us. Sometimes, God is Emet. This

means ‘truth’ and reminds us that we can always count on God’s support and love.

A long time ago there were no such people as the Jews. Then God taught Abraham

and Sarah who taught their son Isaac. Isaac married Rebecca who taught her son

Jacob. Jacob and his wives Rachel and Leah taught their twelve children and they

became the Children of Israel. When famine arose in the Land of Israel, God

allowed for Jacob’s son Joseph to go to Egypt. With God’s help, Joseph helped his

family escape hunger. Years later, a Pharaoh of Egypt made the Children of Israel

slaves. God rescued our ancestors from slavery and we raced across the Sea of

Reeds. Feeling great joy and amazed at the miracle, Moses and Miriam and all the

children of Israel sang out this song to God:

Shirah chadashah shibb’chu g’ulim l’shimcha al s’fat ha-yam yachad kullam hodu

On the shore of the sea, those who were rescued sang a new song in Your praise.

Together all of them thanked You and proclaimed You as Sovereign:

‘God alone will rule forever and ever!’

1 God remembered Sarah and did as

had been promised.

2She became pregnant and had a son

for Abraham in his old age, at the

exact time God had told him.

3Abraham named his newborn son that

Sarah had given birth to Isaac.

4When his son Isaac was eight days

old, Abraham circumcised him, as God

commanded him.

5Abraham was 100 years old when his

6Sarah said, ‘God has brought me

laughter; all who hear will laugh with

sad over the boy or your slave.

13I will also make a nation out of the

children of the slave’s son, for he, too, is

your offspring.’

14Early next morning, Abraham got up

and took bread and a waterskin and

handed them to Hagar, placing them and

the boy on her shoulder. Then he cast

her out; trudging away, she wandered

aimlessly in the wilderness of

Beersheba.

15When the water in the skin was all

gone, she set the child away under a

1After these things, God tested

Abraham. God called: ‘Abraham!’ And

Abraham said, ‘Here I am.’

2God said, ‘Take your son, your only one,

the one you love, Isaac, and go forth to

the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a

sacrifice, on one of the mountains that I

will show you.

3Abraham rose early, saddled his

donkey, chopped wood for the burnt-

offering, took Isaac his son and his two

servants, and set out for the place that

God had described.

4 On the third day, Abraham raised his

eyes and saw the place from afar.

5Abraham said to his young servants,

‘Stay here with the donkey; the boy and

I will go ahead. We will worship and

return to you.’

6Abraham then took the wood for the

burnt-offering and laid it on Isaac his

son; in his own hand he held the flint and

the knife. And the two of went on

together.

7Isaac then said to Abraham his father,

‘Father!’ Abraham answered: ‘Here I am,

my son.’ Isaac asked: ‘Here is the flint

and the wood, but where is the lamb for

the sacrifice?’

8Abraham replied, ‘God will see to the

lamb for sacrifice, my son.’ And the two

of them went on together.

9They came to the place that God had

described. There Abraham built the

altar and arranged the wood and bound

Isaac his son and laid him on the altar,

upon the wood.

10Abraham now reached out and took

the knife to slay his son

11but out of heaven an angel of God

called to him, saying, ‘Abraham!

Abraham!’ He replied: ‘Here I am.’

12[The angel] then said, ‘Do not lay your

hand on the lad; do nothing to him; for

now I know that you are one who fears

God, as you did not withhold your son,

your only one, from Me.’

13Abraham lifted his eyes: he now could

see a ram [just] after it was caught by

its horns in a thicket. Abraham went

and took the ram and offered it as a

burnt offering in place of his son.

Baruch attah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher natan lanu Torat emet, v’chayei

olam nata b’tocheinu. Baruch attah Adonai, notein ha-Torah.

Blessed are You, our Living God, Ruler of the universe, who gave us the teaching

of truth and planted eternal life within us. Blessed are You God, who gives us

the Torah.

Everyone rises as the Torah is Lifted

‘14Abraham named that place Adonai

Yir’eh; to this day people say: ‘On the

mount of the Eternal, [God] will be

seen.’

15Then out of heaven an angel of the

Eternal called to Abraham a second

time,

16 saying: ‘By Myself I swear, says the

Eternal One, that because you did this

thing, and did not withhold your son,

your only one,

17I will bless you greatly, and make your

descendants as numerous as the stars

of heaven and the sands of the

seashore, and your descendants shall

take possession of the gates of their

foes.

18And through your descendants the

nations of the earth shall be blessed,

because you hearkened to My voice.’

19Abraham then returned to his servant

lads; they got up and travelled together

to Beersheba, and Abraham settled in

Beersheba.

V’zot ha-Torah asher sam Moshe lifnei b’nei Yisrael. Torah tzivah lanu Moshe, morashah k’hillat

Ya’akov. Ha’el tamim darko, imrat Adonai ts’rufah, magein hu l’chol hachosim bo.

This is the Torah that Moses set before the Children of Israel. Moses

commanded us the Torah, the heritage of the community of Jacob. The way of

God is perfect, and the word of Adonai is proved. God is a shield for all who

trust in God.

The ark doors are opened and the Torah is dressed as we sing:

Praise God whose name alone is supreme and whose majesty is beyond heaven

and earth. Praise God!

Eits chayim hi la-machazikim bah, v’tom’cheha m’ushar. D’racheha darchei no’am, v’chol

It is a tree of life to all who grasp it and those who hold fast to it are happy.

Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace. Turn us back to

You, Eternal, and we shall return; renew our lives as of old.

In the Torah we read that God tested Abraham to see whether he would obey

and follow God’s command to offer his only son Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham

proved himself loyal and was prepared to carry out God’s word. At the last

moment, however, Abraham was commanded not to slay Isaac. Instead he

offered a ram which was caught in the bushes by its horn. The ram’s horn is the

Shofar which we sound today.

The shofar reminds us of Abraham’s great loyalty to God and it asks us also to

be loyal.

Often we forget our duties and our responsibilities. We become selfish, lazy or

mean. The Shofar’s calls are like an alarm. They are meant to ‘wake us up,’ to

sound an alert, to let us know how dangerous it is to neglect God’s teachings.

As we listen to the sounds of the Shofar, let us each promise that in the coming

year we will live kinder, more thoughtful and better lives.

Isaac Arama was a Spanish Rabbi who lived in the 15th Century. When he

listened to the blasts of the shofar he heard something different in each of

the three sounds.

When he heard the one long loud blast of the Tekiah, it sounded like a person

shouting and cheering. It said to him, ‘You are lucky. You live in the wonderful

world which God created.’

When he heard the nine quick blasts of the Teruah, it sounded like a person

crying. It felt sad and a little scary. It said to him, ‘You are not as good a person

as you could be. The past year you have done many wrong things.’

When he heard the three short blasts of the Shevarim, it sounded like a person

groaning. It hurt a little bit. It said to him, ‘You have much work to do in order

to become the best person you could be. You must start today.’



The last of the shofar blasts heard on Rosh Hashanah is a Tekiah Gedolah. This

is a ‘super’ Tekiah where the person blowing the shofar makes the longest and

loudest sound possible. It sounds like a big long loud cheer.

When Isaac Arama heard the Tekiah Gedolah it seemed to say to him, ‘I am

proud of you. You’ve worked hard this Rosh Hashanah. You are a good person.

Next year you’ll be even better.’

Malchuyot, Zichronot and Shofarot

Malchuyot

Throughout the year, we think of God in many different ways. At Passover, we

think of God as a rescuer who saved us from slavery in Egypt. At Shavuot, we

think of God as the great teacher who gave us the Torah on which we base our

lives. Soon it will be Sukkot, and we will thank God for being our protector –

helping us survive in the wilderness on our way to the Promised Land and as our

provider – helping us to bring crops to harvest.

Today we think of God as a great ruler; wise and compassionate.

Tradition teaches that on this day God created the world. The heavens and the

earth, the seas and the dry land, plants and trees, fish and birds, animals and

humanity – all were created by God, the ruler of the Universe.

We say ‘God reigns, God has reigned, God will reign forever.’

Zichronot

The rabbis call today Yom Ha-Din, the Day of Judgment. Over the past year we

have all made mistakes. We have not been perfect. Today, however, we ask God

to remember all the good that we have done over the past year; all our good

deeds and our good words. May those good actions work in our favour.

Our ancestors were people like us – they too were not perfect. Just as their

good deeds are remembered by us, so let our good deeds be remembered by

God.

Shofarot

When the Israelites were in the wilderness, the presence of God was heard,

seen and felt. The Children of Israel were at the foot of Mount Sinai and there

was thunder and lightning and strong blasts of the shofar while a thick cloud

covered the mountain.

When Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac, an angel stopped him. A ram took

Isaac’s place as an offering, and the horn is sounded to remind us of that story.

There are stars up above, so far away we only see their light long, long after the

star itself is gone. And so it is with people that we loved – their memories keep

shining ever brightly though their time with us is done. But the stars that light

up the darkest night, these are the lights that guide us. As we live our days,

these are the ways we remember.
