Unit 3 Habitual Past with Used To+ verb

Used to + verb In the U.S., we used to have separate schools

for children of different races. There used to be separate everything

including groups, organizations and teams.   Used To is an action in past that is no longer

done. It usually happened over a period of time.

What’s the difference? I called the police. I used to call the police a lot.

Did not use to (with negative remove-d)

Some restaurants didn’t use to serve minority customers.

What did you used to do? I used to play soccer but now I play tennis. I used to play basketball but now I play soccer. I used to do standup comedy but now I don’t. Moises used to practice a little English but now I practice a lot.

What didn’t you use to do? I didn’t use to speak English every day but now I do. I didn’t use to wake up early. Lee did not use to drive a car everyday. Omar didn’t use to swim.

Past Tense of BE

He was poor. I, he, she, it-----was They were rich. We, you, they-----were There was discrimination. With there---was-singular noun There were many changes --- were- plural noun Life wasn’t easy. (was not) There weren’t many opportunities. (were not) He was born in the early 1900s. They were born to young parents. With born use to be He was married 3 times. He was never bored.

Use be with adjectives that end in ed: crowded, tired, bored, interested, worried, married, divorced, allowed, permitted

Was he poor? Where was he from? Why wasn’t he in school? (was he not)

Why weren’t there many opportunities? (were there not)

For the negative past tense: Growing up, Obama lived with his mother. Didn’t+ base form (did not) Obama didn’t live with his father.

(except be) Obama grew up in Hawaii. Obama didn’t grow up in Africa. Obama knew his mother well. Obama didn’t know his father well.

Questions with the Simple Past Tense

Compare affirmative statements and questions He lived in Hawaii. Did he live in New York? No, he didn’t. Where did he live? He lived in Hawaii, Mass, and Illinois. Did he go to Kenya? Yes, he did. When did he go to Kenya? He went in 1988.
