The Verb Jugar In Spanish, the verb jugar is used to

talk about playing a sport or a game. It is used to say that someone plays

(or is playing)... Jugar is an –ar verb and uses the

same endings as the other -ar verbs, but it has a different stem in some forms.

The Verb Jugar For those forms, the -u- becomes

-ue- . This kind of verb is called a “stem-

changing verb” or a “boot verb.” Here are the present tense forms...

Do not stem-change in the Nosotros or Vosotros forms

Jugar + a + sport After the verb jugar, always use a and the

name of the sport or game: Most sports are masculine. Remember, you

CANNOT use “a el”. “a el” becomes al. ¿Juegas al vóleibol?

You Don’t Always Play Do not use jugar with sports / games that are verbs. Sports that are verbs need to be conjugated to match the subject. i.e. Nadar, Patinar sobre hielo, Esquiar I swim =

Yo juego a nadar. (nunca, nunca, nunca) Juan y María ice skate =

Do not use “jugar” When you would say that someone does a sport in

English, rather than saying they play the sport, use the verb hacer.

i.e: la gimnasia, las artes marciales

Lola hace la gimnasia.

Pepe y Carmen hacen las artes marciales. Sometimes you say that a person participates

(participar) in a sport, rather than they play that sport. i.e. la gimnasia, la pista
