Read the following article about Thanksgiving. Then answer
the reading comprehension questions below.
Thanksgiving is a very important holiday in
Canada and The United States. It is a holiday to celebrate theharvest and the food grown throughout the year. Because
these countries do not grow food all year long, the fallseason is a time to bring the vegetables and fruit in from the
fields and save them for the winter.
In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday inOctober. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on
the 4th Thursday of November.
In both countries, this holiday is a time to visit family and
enjoy a Thanksgiving Day feast. This normally includes
special foods, including the foods in the pictures below:

The main difference between the holiday in Canada and theUnited States is the time. In Canada, Thanksgiving is in
October, which means it is a time that summer is ending, the
fall season is starting, and people are preparing for winter.
In the United States, Thanksgiving marks the start of the
Christmas season, and the day after the holiday is the biggest
shopping day of the year. This is called Black Friday. WhenThanksgiving ends, Christmas begins as Americans get ready
for the holiday season in December.
In both countries, the holiday has its beginnings with theEuropean pioneers and their relations with the Native North
Americans. This is why the image of the American Pilgrim is
famous around Thanksgiving.
While the dates are not exactly known,
Thanksgiving is believed to have started in
1578 in Canada and 1621 in The United States. In Canada, the explorer Martin Frobisher
held a feast to give thanks for a successful

passage to the Pacific Ocean. Later, famous French explorer
Samuel de Champlain organized a celebration for theharvest.
In the United States, it is believed that the first celebration
occurred in 1578 at Plymouth Rock, in what is nowMassachusetts.
Recent celebrations of Thanksgiving include spending time
with family, eating traditional food, and, not surprisingly,
watching football (American football). Considering it is a
popular sport played during the fall and it is a traditional
American sport, football is enjoyed by many Americans on
Thanksgiving day. This includes both college andprofessional games around the country. In Canada, the
professional Canadian Football League also holds two games.
In the U.S., there is also a famousparadeheld in New York
City.

FASHIONS
Read the following passage and do the exercises
Spring, summer, autumn, winter: every season there are new clothes and new
fashions in the shops. Colours and styles keep changing. One season black isthe in colour, but the next season everyone is wearing orange or pink or grey.
One season tight-fitting clothes are fashionable and the next season baggy
clothes are in.
The length of womens skirts goes up and down from year to year. In the
1960s, mini skirts became very fashionable and a woman could wear a skirt
twenty or thirty centimetres above the knee. A few years later, maxi skirts
became trendy and then you had to wear skirts twenty or thirty centimetres
below the knee. Each season there is always a correct length and if your skirt
is just a little too long or too short some people will thing that you are very
unfashionable.
Men have similar problems with their shirts. Some years it is fashionable to
wear very small collars. Another year small collars become out-dated and large
button-down collars are trendy. Sometimes it even becomes fashionable to
wear shirts with no collars at all. A shirt that you once thought was very
trendy can look strangely old-fashioned a few years later. And your fathers
shirts, which you always thought were very conservative and traditional, can
suddenly become stylish.Keeping up with the fashions can be very expensive. So one way to save money
is never to throw your old clothes out. If you wait long enough, the clothes are
out of fashion today will be back in fashion tomorrow. Yesterdays clothes are
tomorrows new fashions.
English has two articles: the and a/an. The is used to refer to specific or particularnouns;a/an is used to modify non-specific or non-particular nouns. Wecall the the definite article and a/an the indefinite article.
the = definite article
a/an = indefinite article
For example, if I say, "Let's read the book," I mean a specificbook. If I say, "Let's read abook,"I mean anybook rather than a specific book.
Here's another way to explain it: The is used to refer to a specificorparticularmember of agroup. For example, "I just saw the most popular movie of the year." There are many movies, but only one particular movie is the most popular. Therefore, we use the.

17/41
"A/an" is used to refer to a non-specificor non-particularmember of the group. For example, "Iwould like to go see a movie." Here, we're not talking about a specificmovie. We're talkingabout anymovie. There are many movies, and I want to see anymovie. I don't have a specificone in mind.
Let's look at each kind of article a little more closely.
Indefinite Articles: a and an
"A" and "an" signal that the noun modified is indefinite, referring to anymember of a group. Forexample:
"My daughter really wants a dog for Christmas." This refers to anydog. We don't knowwhich dog because we haven't found the dog yet.
"Somebody call a policeman!" This refers to anypoliceman. We don't need a specificpoliceman; we need any policeman who is available.
"When I was at the zoo, I saw an elephant!" Here, we're talking about a single, non-specific thing, in this case an elephant. There are probably several elephants at the zoo,but there's only one we're talking about here.
Articles
First the good news:There are only three articles in English: a, anand the.
There are two types of articles indefini te 'a'and 'an 'ordefini te 'the'. You also need to know
when not to use an article.
The bad news is that their proper use is complex, especially when you get into the advanced
use of English. Quite often you have to work it out by what sounds right, which can be
frustrating for a learner.
Indefinite articles - a and an (determiners)
A and an are the indefinite articles. They refer to something not specifically known to the
person you are communicating with.
A and an are used before nouns that introduce something or someone you have not
mentioned before:-
For
example:
"I saw anelephant this morning."
"I ate abanana for lunch."

7/29/2019 The Present Continuous is a Verb Tense Used to Show Actions (Autoguardado)
18/41
A and an are also used when talking about your profession:-
For
example:
"I am anEnglish teacher."
"I am abuilder."
Note!
You use awhen the noun you are referring to begins with a consonant (b, c, d, f, g,
h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y or z), for example, "a city", "a factory", and "a
hotel".
You use anwhen the noun you are referring to begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u)
Pronunciation changes this rule. It's the sound that matters, not the spelling.
Use >a< or >an

questions.
Positive Clauses
In positive clauses, we usually use some.

Compound Words with some & any
Some & any can also be part of compound words such as:

Note that some & anyhave to be used with a noun while compound words with some & anycan
stand on their own.

However, some and anyneed not stand directly before the noun. Sometimes, the noun appears
somewhere before some oranyand is not repeated. So if you are not sure whether to
use some orsomethingfor example, check if there is a noun in the sentence that you can place
aftersome.

that was happening, going on, at some point in the past. This tense is formed
with the helping "to be" verb, in the past tense, plus the present participle of
the verb (with an -ingending):
I was riding my bike all day yesterday.
Joel was being a terrible role model for his younger brother.
The past progressive indicates a limited duration of time and is thus a
convenient way to indicate that something took place (in the simple past)
while something else was happening:

A STRANGE EXPERIENCE
Last month I was on holiday in Ireland with my mum and dad. One day, we were driving through a
small village. It was time for lunch, so we stopped at a restaurant .
It was a large , old builiding. We looked through the window. There were lots of people in the
restaurant. They were eating , drinking and chatting . A musician was playing the violin. But
there was something strange about the people . They weren't wearing normal , modern clothes.
They were wearing hats, jackets and dresses from another century . We couldn't understand it.
But we were hungry , so we opened the door .
When we went into the restaurant, everything was different. The people were wearing normal
clothes. The musician wasn't there- the music was on CD. It was a very strange experience !
