Uniquely HakoneOne of Japan’s Most Famous Resorts

Hakone has a long history as a stop on the Tokaido highway. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, it attracts around 20 million visitors per year. Located only 90 minutes by car from central Tokyo and Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), Hakone is renowned for its natural beauty and the visual delights of its changing seasons. It is also blessed with spectacular views of majestic Mt. Fuji, a World Heritage site.

Hakone is also one of Japan’s most renowned onsen (hot spring) resorts and an exclu-sive summer retreat. With twenty springs concentrated in one small area, it has been a famous spa for more than 1,200 years.

Uniquely The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Hakone- SengokuharaSurrounded by mountains providing magical views of pampas grass plains, Hakone has long been a favorite getaway for Japan’s elite, a place where since ancient times dignitaries and distinguished scholars have built their second homes. Its elegant museums and famous golf courses blend harmoniously into the natural beauty for which the area is renowned.

“Beautiful Japan’s Shangri-la.” No words could better describe Sengokuhara, the part of Hakone in which this exquisite boutique hotel with only eleven rooms is located. Private baths in each room are fed directly with hot-spring water. The food is the height of luxury, and the hospitality for which Japan is renowned is taken to its highest level.

To the very finest accommodations, food, and service, we add uniquely Hakone delights: pairing dinners with local sake, a tour of a local sake brewery, an opportunity to explore the world of Hakone Yosegi Marquetry.

Our aim is to operate hotels that are themselves destina-tions, places that our guests want to visit. Each hotel takes full advantage of the appeal of its location and makes every effort to ensure that our visitors enjoy memorable stays, filled with hospi-tality like that offered by the very best restaurants.

Japanese sake pairing special dinner

A diverse array of Inoue Sake Brewing sakes are paired with unique dishes that capture the sublime essence of Hakone’s four seasons. The water used by Inoue Sake Brewing is drawn from an under-ground river and is full of minerals that give this brewery’s sakes their distinctive profile with a fine balance of acidity.Don’t miss this opportunity to savor this delicious marriage of Japanese sake with unique dishes made with local Hakone ingredi-ents, a combination found only at the Hiramatsu Sengokuhara Hotel. Five types of sake pairings include : Sparkling Sweetheart, Hakoneyama Junmaishu, Senmaikyo unfiltered Junmai sake, Hakoneyama Junmai Ginjō, Hakoneyama, Junmaidaiginjō, Shonan Gold Liqueur.

Local Experiences: Japanese Sake Brewery Tour & Tasting

The Inoue Sake Brewing Company, located on Hakone’s eastern foothills in Ōimachi, Ashigara-kamigun, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Sagawa River valley broadens into the Ashigara plain, has brewed sake contin-uously since its founding in 1789. Its top-of-the-line Hakone-Yama has long been one of the Hakone region’s most highly regarded local sakes.

Organized in cooperation with Inoue Sake Brewing, our tasting tour introduces participants to the fascinating world of Japanese sake. Visitors learn how sake is made and enjoyed through touring the brewery, usually closed to outsiders, even during the October to March season in which brewing peaks. The tasting that follows the tour offers an opportunity to compare different varieties of sake.

Local Experiences: Yosegi Marquetry WorkshopHakone’s mountains have long been famous for the diversity of their forests. One outcome is Hakone Yosegi Marquetry, a traditional craft whose history begins in the Edo Period. Its art lies in combining many different types of wood, taking advantages of their different colors to produce items decorated with finely detailed geometric patterns. Complex wooden puzzles are one especially attractive form of Yosegi Marquetry.

Hakone Maruyama Bussan, located in front of what was once the Hakone barrier on the Tokaido, the highway connecting Kanto and Kansai, specializes in production and sale of Yosegi Marquetry. At the workshop, after watching the craftsmen at work, visitors are invited to try an only-in-Hakone experience, making their own “secret boxes” with hidden compartments. Making your own box with its own unique tricks is one of the highlights of a visit to Hakone. Here, too, you can purchase the many famous marquetry items produced by the experienced craftsmen who have dedicated their lives to their craft.
