This large entrance to the Hakone hot springs has the longest history of all those which are mentioned in the list of 17 hot springs in Hakone. Even today, it boasts the greatest number of hot spring sources and Japanese-style inns.
This day-trip hot spring is based on an old folk house located in the countryside. It is complete with large public baths as well as chartered private open-air baths. You can also enjoy authentic Irori fireplace cuisine during a relaxing day spent here.

This resort leads Hakone’s hot spring culture, having flourished in the Edo period as a health resort for feudal lords and wealthy merchants and in the Meiji period as a health resort for foreigners.

There are many quiet, well established Japanese hot spring inns, particularly beloved by ancient and modern intellectuals in this area where the fragrance of nature and literature hangs in the air.

Zeniarai Benzaiten is on the up line platform immediately adjacent to Tonosawa Station. There are four shrines from the main shrine to the rear shrine, which are said to have powers to bless people with fortune, relationship, accomplishments, etc., so the number of visitors is increasing.
This area thrives as a town of Hakone craftsmanship, and its origins are the hot springs normally used by the inhabitants. Its family-oriented atmosphere is conveyed down to this day.

The Tozan Railway zigzags back and forth in what is known as a “switchback” in order to climb the steep mountain. This switchback is carried out at Ohiradai Station, where one can see the unusual spectacle of driver and conductor changing places.
Positioned upstream of Jakotsu River , water flows down the moss-covered rock surface, looking like several threads, hence the name “Chisujinotaki”. (The waterfall is approximately 3m high and 20m wide.)
Chisujinotaki
Horaien is a garden with an area of approximately 66,000 ㎡ that was opened at the start of Taisho era by Kyozo Enomoto - the founder of the Kowakidani Onsen Mikawaya Ryokan - and is known as a famous site of azaleas. From the end of April until the middle of May,approximately 30,000 flowers bloom, with around 40 varieties including Satsuki azalea,Rhododendron kiusianum and Rhododendron kaempferi, while in the fall one can see beautiful autumn colors.

The Ishigakiyama name comes from the fact that this was built as the castle and stronghold of Ishigaki in order for Toyotomi Hidetoshi to attack Hojo. The park covers an area of around 5.8ha and is designated as a National Historical Landmark.
The large cherry tree here is famous. It is 13m tall with a trunk circumference of around 4.7m, and is said to have been planted by Inaba Masanori, a feudal lord in the Edo period. It looks amazing when in bloom from the end of March until the beginning of April, its flowers hanging like waterfalls.
This place of the family temple of the Hojo Clan was established in 1521 by Hojo Ujitsuna, the second generation of the Hojo Clan, based on the will of his father, Hojo Souun (1432-1519). It is an ancient temple for the Daitokuji branch of the Rinzai sect.
In old times, the area around Miyanoshita thrived with antique shops and souvenir shops for foreign tourists, and the shopping district that retains the retro look of those days came to be called “Sepia-street”.
This historical park was opened in 1914. Here, you can enjoy seasonal flowers throughout the year. Inside the park you will find Hakone Craft House, tearooms and cafés where you can take lunch or stop to rest and appreciate the park at your leisure.

Odawara Castle was maintained and expanded by the Hojo Clan as its central base of rule over the Kanto region, and it is said to have been prepared for siege by Hideyoshi Toyotomi with an enclosure 9km long encircling the land around the castle.

This is said to be a “little hell” in comparison with the “large hell” of Owakudani, and many hot spring sources developed here starting in the Meiji period.
