ARCHIVESUNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
SITE PLAN 1:500
Located in Brunswick, the site for the Mel-bourne University Archives is over four thousand square meters. Unusual site area compared to the rest of the neighborhood and reason alone to be an icon on a small and city-wide scale.Analyzing the surrounding area we notice old buildings and new, contemporary, ones sit-ting next to each other, making it an in-teresting and complex urban palimpsest.
Venturis theory is spread all over Brunswick, with its many contradictions. The Archive Build-ing embraces that concept poping out on the built surroundings in its aesthetics and function. With very restrict use, the challenge was to give back and add to comunity, in a visual and so-cial manner. With that in mind the first step was to state the project as what it is, and ar-chive building, and showcase its function.
In addition to the glass panels displaying the stor-age space for all Brunswick dwellers, a public ter-race space is accessible from the Outr Gallery next to it, connecting both projects as well as giv-ing back a multiple use space, setback from the street and again showcasing the buildings rea-son to be, the storage space for the archives. All of that to achieve acceptance and to blend in by contrasting with the existing surrounding.
