Upstream Ghana
Ghana's upstream petroleum industry though nascent, continues to evolve at a promising
rate, rife with opportunities for the nation and investors.
Exploration activities offshore Ghana's continental shelf have increased. Since the discovery
of oil and gas in commercial quantities in the Jubilee Field in 2007, 25 additional discoveries
including seven new discoveries in the Deep-Water Tano Cape Three Points (DWTCTP) Block
have been made.
Ghana continues to attract established players in the industry such as ExxonMobil and
others. The country's stable political, democratic environment and robust regulatory
frameworks for the sector have been contributory factors in attracting these companies into
the sector. Currently, over 16 companies have petroleum licenses over 18 offshore
acreages.
As the country continues to enhance its resource base, the Government has given approval
to Aker Energy to conduct appraisal of some of the discoveries and prepare a POD for the
development of Ghana's fourth producing eld. The Government has also given approval
for Aker Energy AS to take over Hess Ghana's stake in the DWTCTP Block. It is anticipated that
this Trade Mission in collaboration with the Norwegian Partners (NORWEP) will provide
networking opportunities for registered Ghanaian/Indigenous companies with Norwegian
companies during the 2018 Offshore North Sea (ONS) Conference.
This could lead to the formation of strategic partnerships between Ghanaian companies
and their Norwegian counterparts for the development of the DWTCTP Block.
Exploration in the onshore Voltaian Basin, one of four sedimentary basins in Ghana is ongoing
to increase the nation's resource base. In this light, reconnaissance exploration activity has
been planned to establish presence of petroleum system and prospectivity of the basin with
the objective of increasing the nation's resource base.
As we work with industry players to build a robust industry, we continue to welcome
investments and re-investments in our upstream petroleum sector. We are keen to welcome
