WA agent strands clientsCONSUMER Protection WA is

warning customers of Fremantle-based Sky Air Services that the travel agency is experiencing financial difficulties.

Ten clients have reported bookings have not been paid, with some customers told their tickets had been cancelled upon arrival at the airport.

Some passengers have been stranded in Europe, according to the ABC, while others have faced

a tirade of abuse via the Sky Air Services Facebook page after making complaints.

One comment slams a client as a “f***ing pain in the ass hard maintance anyways! good riddance and bon voyage!!” [sic].

It’s understood many of the complaints are from the Serbian and Croatian community, with the agency specialising in travel to these destinations.

WA Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Anne Driscoll, urged customers who booked through Sky Air Services to contact suppliers to check the booking.

“Consumers who have made a booking using a credit card and not received what they paid for should seek a chargeback from their card provider...unfortunately those who have paid by direct bank transfer may not be able to access redress in this way, which serves as a reminder not to pay for travel services in this way.”

Hilton highlights Hollywood in Hawaii

HILTON Hotel Sydney’s Marble Bar was the venue for last night’s ‘Hollywood in Hawaii’ cocktail reception, sponsored by Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Hawaii Tourism Oceania, Hawaiian Airlines and Oahu Visitors Bureau.

Some 70 industry professionals were treated to a selection of Hawaii regional cuisine inspired by dishes prepared by Hilton Hawaiian Village’s executive chef Charles Charbonneau.

Guests also had the opportunity to sample some iconic Blue Hawaiian cocktails.

The ‘Aloha State’ has been a popular movie destination since the 1930s which has helped elevate Hawaii to gain worldwide fame and showcase the many varied landscapes, history, culture and people.

Hawaii’s golden beaches,

volcanic deserts, lush rainforests and picturesque blue oceans have served as the setting for over 130 movies and 160 TV shows.

In 2015, two blockbuster films - Aloha and Jurassic World - have once again put Hawaii on the world map, showcasing the island state’s landscapes.

A number of prizes were up for grabs at last night’s event, incl the major prize for two people of a trip to Hawaii courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines & four nights at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Pictured with some Hollywood heart-throb cut-outs from left are Ashlee Galea, HTO; Vanessa Ligovich, Pinpoint; Carina Mullen, Ecruising; Nina Henderson, House of Travel; Larissa Centorino, The Travel Authority; Fiona Dalton, Qantas Holidays and Andrew Denman from Hawaiian Airlines.

TNZ coach campaignTOURISM New Zealand has

launched a new campaign in partnership with major Australian tour operators in an effort to rekindle consumer interest in NZ coach touring.

Pitched at the boomer market from regional parts of Australia, the campaign centres on the seamless holiday experience of coach touring on the north and south islands.

For a number of years, the NZ coach market has suffered a downturn in passengers as more travellers opt for cruises.

TNZ gm Australia Tony Saunders said the “active boomers” coach sector is important to NZ as it attracts “high value visitors that stay longer and spend more”.

Aligning with TNZ for the promo are AAT Kings, APT, Evergreen Tours, Grand Pacific Tours, Kirra Tours, Scenic and Travelmarvel.

Campaign activity includes the new 100% Pure brand TVC (TD 15 May) which will run on Australian east coast regional markets, supported by a 16-page lift-out to be distributed regionally with Fairfax and on its digital channels.

“The 2015 Coach campaign brings a diverse range of activities and experiences to life whilst showcasing the accessibility of New Zealand’s gems to Australians,” Saunders added.

‘INSTP’ adds competitionHELLOWORLD managing

director of wholesale brands Peter Egglestone says the launch of instant purchase dynamic inventory in Calypso provides agents with a “modern inventory stream for the first time.”

The roll out of the technology - flagged first to the trade by Travel Daily earlier this week (TD Tue) - allows agents booking content with Qantas Holidays & Viva! Holidays through its reservations systems including easyway access to “often short sharp tactical offers” which must be paid within 10 mins via a credit card or enett.

Instant purchase inventory is identified on Calypso by the rate code of ‘INSTP’, with rates and availability fluctuating from minute to minute.

Commission levels sit between 8% and 10% on INSTP inventory.

“These rates further allow our partners to remain competitive in an increasingly online and dynamic environment,” Egglestone commented.

To celebrate the functionality’s

launch, agents can access Accor ‘Hot Deals’ for immediate sale.

“Over time, we will release further instant purchase rates that will be available online and offline, with a key focus on destinations such as UK & Europe, Asia & USA,” the wholesale companies stated.

Ireland specialist Mega Fam

ADRIANA Neil Stevens from Travel Associates in Sydney has been crowned the world’s first ever Top Ireland Specialist.

Last month she joined other agent participants from across the globe for the Ireland Specialists Mega Famil, with other Aussie agents in the contingent including Carolyn Price from API Travel in Brisbane and Tatyana Vanegas of Holiday World Travel in Melbourne.

The group (pictured), which also included consultants from China, India, the Middle East, South Africa and New Zealand, battled it out in daily challenges in various fields such as sports, photography, food and social media, along with a high-tech

treasure hunt around Dublin City.Adriana was apparently an

early front runner after capturing some stunning video footage of Newgrange, Ireland’s oldest passage tomb.

She also took second place in the Gaelic Games hurling challenge with an “impressive PocFada” (careful how you pronounce that) and ended up top of the table at the trip’s end.

THE Tasmanian Govt has given the go ahead for a new multi-day mountain biking experience in the state’s northeast.

Dubbed Blue Derby Pods Ride, the initiative combines three days of off-road cycling through national parks coupled with “high-crafted, eco-friendly, suspended accommodation”.

A number of sites have been earmarked for the project in Derby Regional Reserve, including Hollybank mountain bike park & trails, Derby trails and the Blue Tier/Weldborough trail.

“This unique and innovative fusion of experiences will provide a new offering that will vastly enhance visitor experience in the state,” project proponents said.

“BDPR has the potential to build

Tasmania’s profile and reputation as a world-class mountain biking destination, just as the similar bushwalking experiences offered by Cradle Mountain Lodge and Bay of Fires Walk have done for Cradle Mountain and the Bay of Fires,” the firm said.

Minister for Environment, Parks & Heritage Matthew Groom said the Blue Derby Pods Ride will help Tasmania grow its visitor numbers.

The eco-style pods will be solar powered and feature composting toilets and manually-pumped showers.

Sixteen new jobs will be created by the tourism development.

Negotiations for an appropriate lease arrangement for the site will now commence.

New Tassie bike & pod touringStar Alliance addsAVIANCA Brasil has become

the newest member of the Star Alliance, with a ceremony held at Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil today.

The Brazilian offshoot of existing Star carrier Avianca, Avianca Brasil has about 8.4% of the country’s aviation market with a domestic network operating from destinations across the country as well as 88 international flights per week to North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Allianz Audi incentiveALLIANZ Global Assistance has

launched a national competition which gives travel agents the opportunity to win an Audi A1.

Worth about $33,000, the vehicle will be won by an agent who sells a designated travel insurance policy between 20 Jul and 31 Oct 15.

Allianz chief sales officer Brad Smith said the incentive is a recognition of the “important role travel agents play in the booking phase of the customer journey”.

QF MEL-LAX changesQANTAS is set to reduce

frequencies on the Melbourne-Los Angeles route, with GDS displays seeing one less weekly flight effective from 27 Jan 16.

The change will see QF095/96 ex MEL cancelled on Sun, with QF to still fly MEL-LAX 9 times a week.

More NZ automationTHE NZ government has

announced the expansion of SmartGate facilities at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch airports, including “next generation” systems which don’t require a separate kiosk.

Over the next 18-24 months 29 of the new SmartGates will roll out, allowing passengers to just scan their passport at the gate rather than use the current ticket-based kiosk system.

Agents in Leading lap of luxury

IT WAS luxury all the way for this group of agents enjoying a familiarisation tour of the USA East Coast hosted by The Leading Hotels of the World collection.

Escorted by LHW’s Carol McLaren, the group inspected some of the group’s boutique and high-end properties, inspecting some and staying at some others.

In NYC, these included the

According to base RMR research showing 12.9 million Australians took a holiday in the year ending Mar 2015, 3.7% of these, or around 480,000 referred to a printed guidebook for assistance.

This figure is down from 6.3%, however sits at 12.1% of those whose holiday was overseas.

Broken down further, solo travellers, non-fiction readers, couples & those aged 50-64 were the most likely demographic to consult a printed guidebook.
