MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Every AOA member has a CME requirement

CME credit is tracked for members by the

AOA Department of Client and Member

Services (CRC)

All CME is tracked over a specified 3-year

CME cycle

Current CME Cycle is 2016 - 2018

Every AOA member must earn in a 3 year cycle:

30 credits in Category 1-A CME

50 Specialty Credits

150 total credits (AOBFP)*

*AOA requires 120 total credits for Membership.

HOW MEMBERS MAY OBTAIN AOA CATEGORY 1-B CREDITS

Publications, Inspections, Examinations, and Committee Meetings

Osteopathic Preceptoring

A maximum of 60 AOA Category 1-B credits may be applied to the 120-hour requirement.

Non-Osteopathic CME Programs

CCME may recognize allopathic specialty or subspecialty programs for Category 1-B credit, when essentially no equivalent course content available within osteopathic profession

Certification Examination

15 Category 1-B credits will be

awarded to AOA members who

pass an AOA recertification

examination or obtain a

certification of added

qualification.

HOW MEMBERS MAY OBTAIN AOA CATEGORY 2-A CREDITS

Category 2-A includes formal educational programs that are

ACCME accredited AMA PRA Category 1 credit™

AAFP approved

Sponsored by an internationally known sponsor acceptable to the CCME,

OR

sponsored by AOA-accredited Category 1 CME Sponsors that do not meet

the 1-A faculty/hours requirement for Category 1-A credit.

HOW MEMBERS MAY OBTAIN AOA CATEGORY 2-B CREDITS

Preparation/presentation of scientific exhibits at professional meetings

Home study; medical journals; non-osteopathic medical video/audio tapes

Journal type CME on the Internet

Faculty development programs that are administrative in nature

Physician administrative training/quality assessment

Risk management programs that are administrative in nature

ABMS recertification examination

5 credits may be granted for reading medical textbooks

Non-Qualified Activities

Volunteer Work

The AOA applauds volunteer work, but it does not qualify for CME credit

Post Graduate Studies

Studies for advanced degrees, whether MS, MPH, MBA, or doctorate, does

not qualify for CME credit

Medical Facility Tours

Exemptions/Reductions

AOA members exempted from CME requirements include:

retired members who do not hold an active license

AOA members outside boundaries of United States and Canada

student members; interns, and residents; fellows

members participating in AOA recognized postgraduate programs

military members assigned positions other than in specialty or who are

involved in significant military operations

Any osteopathic physician, other than career military personnel, called to

active/emergency need duty, military operation, or placed on stand-by, and

is CME deficient at end of a cycle, may request to have their CME

requirement waived/reduced.

Extenuating Circumstances

Members may qualify for reduction in requirements if:

extenuating circumstances such as:

serious illness/financial or family problems

changes in practice status since beginning of CME cycle

AOA exemptions or reductions in the number of required credits, for

membership or certification, do not pertain to individual state CME

licensing requirements or any other CME requirements that a

physician may have (i.e., specialty college requirement or another

organization)
