    16Rooted inResponsibility

    The power of

    imagination is that

    it can be harnessed

to transform reality;without it, our world

    would remain static

    and unchanging.

    Mr Ho KwonPingExecutive Chairman

The artist Pablo Picasso once said, Every thing you can imagine is real.

That neatly summarises our challenge in creating the Banyan Tree Experience. The power of imagination is that it can be harnessed to transform reality; without it,our world would remain static and unchanging.

The notion that life and business is all about continual change, and that change isabout transforming dreams into reality through the power of imagination, makes theword Imagine one of the most important verbs in the Banyan Tree vocabulary.

    This is why:

    I represents Insight

For Banyan Tree, our original insight into hospitality was that all guests including us remember moments of great emotional significance. That insight is at the very heart ofthe Banyan Tree brand, and the source of our creed, that we are about romance andintimacy, and not luxury and exclusivity.

    M stands for Mindset

Disruptive innovation must often start from within. And for that to happen, mindsetsmust change and evolve.

    A is for Anticipate

Our teams spend a substantial portion of time thinking, visualising and imagining thefuture. Anticipation is imagination, preparing for act ion.

    G is for Gradual growth

Perhaps more important than disruptive innovations, such as the Internet, is gradualgrowth in other words, sustainability. With our commitment to Corporate SocialResponsibility, we maintain an environmentally sustainable approach to develo pmentand progress.

    I stands for Integration

In Banyan Tree we are particularly integrated we have our own architectural anddesign company, our own project management and procurement arms, to deliver thefinal resort, spa, or residential product which needs to be managed and marketed not

only effectively, but with the same brand values that infuse the entire group.

    N represents Niche

To be globally sustainable, one has to be among the top three or four dominant playersin a chosen niche.

    E stands for Experiment

We dare to experiment within parameters, so that we can develop a culture ofentrepreneurship. From experimentation comes a culture of initiative, innovation andimagination.

So in a nutshell, these seven imperatives forming the acronym IMAGINE, is the driverbehind the Banyan Tree Experience which seeks to continually refresh and renew itself.

Banyan Tree is a small and young enterprise. But we have big dreams of being a globalplayer in our chosen niche, and today, with our footprint in virtually every continentthrough some 50 development projects, and with over 45 nationalities in our little unitednations, there is no turning back on this long, arduous, but deeply fulfilling journey.

The development features eightspa pavilions, which spans across an areaof 5,000 square metres, an 800-squaremetre Hydrothermal Experience as well asextensive fitness and wellness facilities.

Signature dining outlets, and extensiveconference facilities make Banyan TreeSanya an ideal venue for small- and large-scale meetings, incentives, conferencesand exhibitions (MICE). The highlighthowever, is the resorts two Presidential

Villa Complexes. Unprecedented in bothscale and luxury, these are speciallydesigned to host local and internationaldignitaries and accompanying entourages, catering to groups of up to 50 in eachprivate poolside compound.

Sea, Sand and Sanya Sea, Sand and Sanya

On the legendary island of Hainan, China, Banyan Tree Sanya opens itsdoors to beach beauties and cultural conquests

    SEA, SAND AND SANYA

Each Presidential Villa comprises twoking-sized bedrooms and four adjacentbedrooms with twin beds, with everyamenity including expansive receptionroom, a dining room, family room, theatre, games room, private spa suite and gym,as well as the main swimming pool, measuring over 300 square metres, withan outdoor sunken pavilion and heated

    jet-pool.

Both Presidential Villa Complexes benefitfrom an unparalleled level of securityfeatures including perimeter fences, whereby they can be closed off andtreated as singular, or indeed dual entities,as the two complexes can be integratedseamlessly with the resort.

Designed entirely by Architrave Designand Planning, the in-house architecturaldivision of Banyan Tree, the villas arelinked together by a river system, wherethe villa pools infinity edge overlooks theexternal lagoon, which winds through theentire resort, much like the many rivers andbays found in Sanya.

The spacious pool villas are crowned withred clay-tiled roofs and black slate walls, combining intricate Chinese accents with adistinctive tropical minimalism.

China has a little of everything foreveryone, from rugged mountains, tobustling metropolises. Tucked away, on itssouthern-most tip, is a gem of an islandcalled Hainan or sometimes dubbedthe Oriental Hawaii. At its coordinates of20 degrees north of the equator, Hainanisland is a prized latitudal combinationof sunny beaches, coral reefs, balmyclimate and hilly landscape, which is notexperienced anywhere else in China. Thisis the setting for tropical Banyan TreeSanya, worlds apart yet just one hoursflight from Hong Kong.

This erstwhile little-known beach meccahas been in the international spotlightin recent years for hosting world-classevents such as the Miss World pageants. It is little wonder that Sanya has been thechoice venue for such high profile events.

Vast stretches of scenic coastlines areaccompanied by beautiful natural beaches,

fresh sea breezes and clear waters, making water-sports like diving andsnorkelling very popular. The long warmdays and mild winters also make Sanya anidyllic spot for weary travelers who wantto recuperate from the more exhaustingaspects of travel in China.

Soft opened in April 2008, the exclusiveBanyan Tree Sanya, located at the sereneLuhuitou Bay, on the southern coast o fHainan island, is the first all-pool villa resortin China and complements the Groupstwo highly-acclaimed properties locatedin Chinas Yunnan province, Banyan TreeRingha and Banyan Tree Lijiang.

Opened in 1989, thepark is located in t he Luhuitou Peninsulasouthwest of Sanya and covers almost82 hectares with the highest elevationreaching a height of 181 metres. Thepark is marked by a large stone sculpturedepicting a deer with its head turnedaround. A romantic folktale lies behind howthe park got its name and it is rumouredthat couples who have a picture taken withthe sculpture will be blessed. The hilltoppark is noted for being an excellent placeto get a birds eye view of the sea anddowntown Sanya, as well as to savour thesun rising and setting over the city.

Where The Rainforest Meets the ReefCapturing a Bygone Era

Where The Rainforest Meets the ReefCapturing a Bygone Era

With the World Heritage listed Daintree-Cape Tribulation Rainforest just minutesaway, and the added proximity of thelegendary Great Barrier Reef, it is littlewonder that Palm Cove has been dubbedone of the premier beach and weddingdestinations in Australia. Its beaches

draw a faithful following of artists andphotographers attracted by its small town

charm, blending laid-back relaxationwith chic sophistication.

The abundance of Melaleuca treesendemic to the region, a sprinkling ofislands on the horizon and a romantic

jetty, makes this Spa Capital of Australiaideally placed to explore the attractions ofFar North Queensland.

Amongst those attractions, is theoutstanding and oft-awarded AngsanaGreat Barrier Reef. Located just 25minutes drive from the city of Cairns and

35 minutes from Port Douglas, the resort is the only propertythat boasts absolute frontageto the magnificent Coral Sea

which in turn opens directlyto the awe-inspiring

    Great Barrier Reef.

A slew of contemporary innovationsintroduced by the resort has been

long awaited by regular fans.Water babies looking for a

winter dip will rejoicenow that the resorts

popular Rock Pool, one of the three largeswimming pools available on the premises,is one of the few pools in Palm Cove to beheated during the cooler months of Juneto August.

Yet another plus, is wireless Internet

access, which is available throughoutthe entire resort yes, right out to thebeachfront, so those surfers (the oneswho prefer the web to the waves) canstay online even while outdoors. Surfingcontinues from the stylishly refurbishedLobby Lounge to the expansive UlyssesLounge, whose name is reminiscent of theclassic Greek hero who travelled the oceanwaves.

Also refurbished, Angsana Spa nowcomes with a choice of air-conditionedbeachfront spa suites and rooftop spapavilions. Each rooftop spa pavilion comeswith intimate facilities, specially designedfor couples and has its own private plungepool against the backdrop of the Coral

    WHERE THE RAINFORESTMEETS THE REEF

In the heart of Palm Cove, Angsana Great Barrier Reef remakes itselffor nature lovers

Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, the former residence ofa prince and now award-winning property affiliated to the

Angsana Hotels and Resorts group, launched an evocativephotography exhibition entitled Lost & Found by Vientiane-born photographer Ratsamy Viphakone-Szafran in November2007.

Ms Viphakone-Szafran, more affectionately known as Mimito her associates, has loaned her deeply-moving oeuvre ofphotographs to Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel indefinitely, after its first show in 2006 at TShop Lai Gallery in Vientiane.

Ms Viphakone-Szafran was born in Vientiane to a diplomaticfamily, in the-then Kingdom of Laos. Having left the country

in 1975, she returned in 1995 to reconnect to her birthplacethrough photographic mementos. Mimi was already abudding photographer during her teenage years, capturinglocal sights and scenes with her trusty Rolleiflex which was agift from her father. Unfortunately, these portraits and scenesof those bygone days in Laos have since been lost.

Lost and Found tells of Mimis emotional journey during herhomecoming years. The pictures encapsulate her personalprocess of reclaiming lost images, sorting out the pastfrom the present, essentially spinning tales of exile and re-appropriation.

Now living in Paris, Mimi flew down especially to LuangPrabang to grace the opening of the exhibition. Many of herfriends, including the expatriate community and a handful ofappreciative hotel guests, were present to celebrate and lendtheir show of support that evening. The photographs wereartfully displayed along the walkway leading to the GardenWing of the hotel.

Most significantly, Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, inassociation with the artist, will earmark a portion of theproceeds from the sales of the photographs, for an ongoingeffort to assist needy Laotian children in furthering theireducation and obtaining clothing. The hotels success indisplaying meaningful, cultural artwork has prompted it tolook for more such collaborations, which will favourablyincrease and deepen guests exposure and appreciation ofthe rich local culture.

The latest addition to the CSR laboratory family, Banyan TreeBintan Conservation Lab, won the 2008 PATA Gold Award in theEcotourism Project category. The Pacific Asia Travel Association(PATA) Gold Awards is an annual eve nt that recognises exceptionalachievements in various hospitality categories and seeks tohighlight the best Asia Pacifics travel industry has to offer.

Since the founding of Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, CorporateSocial Responsibility (CSR) has played a major role enablingthe Group to be agents of social and economic development indeveloping countries where they have a presence.

Indonesia is recognised as one of the planets most important

biodiversity hotspots. Its seas harbour the most diverse and resilientcoral reefs ecosystem in the world, and it is also home to one theworlds largest tropical rainforest areas. Seventeen percent of theworlds coral reef area is located in this country, while 17% of theworld bird species can be found here. However, much of theseimportant natural resources and ecosystems are under great threat.Destructive and overly-exploitative practices have contributed to therapid degradation of Indonesias natural resources.

The Banyan Tree Bintan Conservation Lab was conceptualised tocontribute to the on-going conservation effort nationwide, particularlyin Bintan island, to reverse the trend of reduced biodiversity becauseof unsustainable practices and habitat destruction. The ConservationLab sets out to collaborate with key conservation groups, zoos, universities and other key stakeholder groups in the area to protectkey conservation targets (i.e. ecosystems and species under highestthreat or whose existence is believed to be in danger) while alsoworking alongside local communities and authorities to develop and

promote alternative livelihood programs that will ease the pressureon precious natural resources.

The Bintan Conservation Lab is directed by a dedicated EnvironmentNaturalist based on site, assisted by two local wildlife rangers. Theteam facilitates the development of conservation programmes aswell as enhances community development and public health ofsurrounding local villages.

Since April 2007, the Bintan Conservation Lab has collaboratedon studies with international and regional experts in their field.

These include a reptile and amphibian survey, a coral survey, abird and butterflies survey, as well as a study on the endangered

    Asian Box Turtle.

As a result of the surveys and partnerships, experts havediscovered over 60 species of birds in the resort area, of which15 are listed as protected species; while approximately 40species of reptiles and amphibians were identified within Banyan

Tree and Angsana Bintan, and surrounding area, including twofreshwater turtle species listed as vulnerable and endangered bythe International Union for Conservation of Nature and NaturalResources (IUCN). Research is ongoing, and further projects andpartnerships are being developed to enhance the ability of theresorts to protect and promote the local ecology.

In a display of Banyan Tree Bintan Conservation Labs effortsto preserve the natural habitat of its surroundings, the resortcelebrated its very first birth of native hawksbill turtles. Hawksbillturtles are one of two of the worlds surviving marine turtle speciesthat live around Bintan island. Although t hese turtles lay hundreds

In collaborationwith partner resorts, the Banyan TreeBintan Conservation Lab team along withstaff at the resort rescued the eggs andrelocated them to a safer nesting site.Upon hatching, the baby turtles werecarefully brought back to the same beachthey were found in and released to begintheir journey into the open waters.

Banyan Tree Bintan is built on a siteremarkable for being a lush first-growthrainforest nestled along the shoreline arare occurrence in Southeast Asia wheremost coastal lands are inhabited andplanted with coconut trees. Interestinglytoo, many of the trees on the site are from50 to 100 years old and some of thesetrees like Malayan Fern Palm and CrinumLily are rare in other parts of Asia.

In Bintan, the Banyan Tree architecturalteam, Architrave, made it a point to workwith the sites imposing terrain and itsvirgin jungle while consciously minimisingthe taming of this majestic wilderness. Each of Banyan Tree Bintans 61 villas wasmeticulously slotted under the canopy ofthe jungle. To avoid cutting into the steep

slopes of the hills, and to prevent soilerosion, the villas were built on platformsand supported by columns.

To preserve Bintans dramatic terrain, landscaping was kept to a minimum, andmost boulders were left where they were. Infact, if one were to visit the resort today, youwill see that a spectacular swimming poolwithin the resort was carved out of rock.

By embracing and reflecting the uniqueculture and heritage, Banyan Treewelcomes guests to broaden theirhorizons and retain the romance of travel.By designing each resort to fit into itsrespective setting, the beauty of localecologies and communities providesa lasting impression of incomparabledestinations.

The hub of an innovativeconservation and researcheffort, the Banyan Tree

Vabbinfaru Marine Labprovides a strong linkbetween the privatesector tourism industryand the social sector and

    environmental conservation community.

Launched in December 2003 on the island resort ofVabbinfaru, the Lab represents years of hard work anddedication to local environmental conservation andcommunity issues. It provides the umbrella for coordinatingextensive conservation work conducted by associates, guests and scientists while also providing a centre forraising environmental awareness within the communities inthe Maldives.

Professor Harrison is one of the many leading scientistsinvited to the Maldives Marine Lab in its efforts to furtherunderstand and safeguard the diversity of the Maldivianreefs and ocean. He works clo sely with the Labs renownedDirector of Conservation, Abdul Azeez Abdul Hakeem, intraining the Marine Lab associates, interacting with resortguests, giving presentations to the Ministry of Fisheries, and setting up long term programmes to collect raw datafor future scientific research purposes.

    BANYAN TREE VABBINFARU MARINE LAB

In 2007, a second research facility, the Banyan TreeVelavaru Marine Lab was established on the island ofVelavaru in the South Nilandhe Atoll. The Marine Lab aimsto further understand and safeguard the incredible diversityof the Maldivian reefs and ocean, at the same time activelyencouraging guests to get involved in the discovery, protection and conservation of local marine wildlifeand corals.

Coral reefs are the heart of Velavaru island, geologicallyand biologically. They support 25% of all marine lifeand protect the coasts from wave erosion. Yet, they arepoorly understood. The Lab has undertaken a variety ofresearch projects regarding various aspects of reef ecologyand inhabitant species, in an effort to expand existingknowledge of the ecosystem of the South Nilandhe Atoll.

The Marine Lab will also focus on protecting sea turtles,a keystone species particularly vulnerable to a widerange of destructive human activities. Angsana Velavaruis a known turtle-nesting site, home to two criticallyendangered species the Hawksbill and Green Sea

Turtles. Conservation of nesting sites is not only vital to thecontinued survival of both species; it ensures that peoplein the future will be able to share in the delight of thesecreatures just as many guests of Angsana Velavaru, youngand old, have.

Behind every thread is a story. This is theunfolding tale of Baan Unrak, a havenfor needy children and their mothers in

Thailand, who are weaving their way intoa secure future with the help of Banyan

    Tree Gallery.

A signature feature of every Banyan Treeand Angsana resort, Banyan Tree Galleryand Angsana Gallery play an importantrole in showcasing cottage crafts oflocal artisans while sustaining theirlivelihoods and craft skills through gainfulemployment. This core belief is the drivingmotivation behind the product lines of theGallery.

Guests at Banyan Tree Lijiang and BanyanTree Ringha, both in the mountainousYunnan province of China, would havenoticed a recent range of exquisite winterapparel appearing on the shelves of theBanyan Tree Galleries located on theirpremises. Warding off cool weather chills, items such as chenille jackets, hats andscarves are delicately hand-woven andinspired by a fusion of Thai, Burmese,Karen and Mon tribal designs, uniquelytailored in line with Banyan Tree Gallerysmandate to be a socially responsibletourism retailer.

These thick woven garments in the Gallerycan trace their origins to a province calledKanchanaburi at the distant west border

of Thailand. In the remote SangkhlaBuri district within Kanchanaburi lies adedicated home, called Baan Unrak, tohouse destitute children and abandonedwomen. Located near the Thai-Burmeseborder, Sangkhla Buri is home to a largepopulation of Burmese immigrants, Karenand Mon hill tribes, many of whom arestateless and poverty-stricken.

Baan Unrak (House of Joy) ChildrensHome was founded in 1991 by DidiDevamala, an Italian volunteer from theNeo Humanist Foundation, to provideshelter, education and emotional supportto the needy children and mothers inthe community. Baan Unrak grew from

a home of initially two to more than 150children today. The primary mission ofBaan Unrak is to support them throughmeans of offering an environmentconducive for living and education, andto extend temporary food and medicalassistance to those in extreme needs.

In 2005, Baan Unrak also established aschool to provide proper kindergartenand primary education, which was lackingin the Sangkhla Buri community. Due torapid enrolment after the opening of theschool, Baan Unrak faced challenges inaccommodating all children with limitedfacilities. Towards the end of 2005,Banyan Tree Bangkokextended its support to

fund the constructioncosts for threeadditional classroomsfor the school.

What does it mean to save the world?

For the creative minds behind Banyan Tree Gallery, their research

turned to the endangered species that live in earths most

beautiful but disappearing habitats. Pandas, elephants, sharks,

gazelles, sea turtles and manta rays are some of the animals

that youll find depicted across a world map, in the new Save

The World collection aimed at raising global environmental

    conservation.

As part of the interconnected circle of life, our responsible

actions can lead to saving the world, and in turn, saving

ourselves. But where do we start?

Heres one way through Save The World at Banyan Tree

Gallery. Pick up visor caps and casual cotton T-shirts for men,

women and children. Handy shopping bags, made of natural

preservative-free cotton, were also developed to encourage

customers to recycle and reuse, as well as to reduce the use of

    plastic bags.

Whenever possible, Banyan Tree Gallery adopts eco-friendly and

recycled materials for its merchandise, and is dedicated towards

continuous innovations in developing unique collections to

promote increased green awareness. To commemorate Earth Day

on 22 April 2008, the responsible retailer contributed a portion

of its sales revenue between April to June 2008 to the GreenImperative Fund (GIF).

The GIF was established in 2002 to expand and formalise

Banyan Trees ongoing environmental conservation and

community development efforts, and operates throughout

Banyan Tree properties. The GIF provides financial support to

worthy environmental initiatives and community-based projects,

such as saving endangered marine turtles in the Indian Ocean

and Andaman Sea, regenerating coral reefs in the Maldives,

preserving rainforests and wildlife in Bintan and protecting the

community being the lack of employmentfor single mothers to sustain livelihoodsof themselves and their children. Whenimpoverished mothers fail to find anymeans to support their children, theyabandon them or turn to prostitution. With effect, a traditional weaving andsewing center was established in 1995

within Baan Unrak to engage anddevelop weaving skills of women throughsustainable employment and training.

Currently, the weaving center employs over20 women weavers, sewers, and trainers.

The products of the weaving center aremainly purchased by visitors to SangkhlaBuri and Baan Unrak. This presented aninspirational opportunity for the Galleryto reach out to the local community byproviding employment to the womenof Baan Unrak, through engaging theirweaving and sewing skills, and bringingthese products to a global audience.

Baan Unrak believes that it is important to

solve community problems from its rootcauses, by helping to keep families intact

through providing sustainable employmentto women. In Didi Devamalas words,Parental love will offer the best conditionand environment for children to grow up.

Achieving self-sufficiency through fruitfulemployment at the weaving centre, manyresidents of Baan Unrak have successfullymoved out and set up their own homes.

Through this first weaving project, theGallery has fulfilled its retail objectivesand Corporate Social Responsibilityaims. Looking forward, the Gallery isdeveloping another range of products withBaan Unrak, bearing hope that additionalprojects for the weaving center willreinforce the Gallerys solid commitmenttowards supporting indigenous artistry andthe livelihood of local communities.

Laguna Resorts & Hotels Public CompanyLimited, has earned a reputation as aresponsible developer whose interestscombine hotels and real estate with anemphasis on quality and environmentalprotection. In addition to its core hotelbusiness at Laguna Phuket, the companyhas successfully diversified into overseasproperties, vacation ownerships, corporatetraining, managing a shopping centre anda tour operation, all of which support andstrengthen the operations of its establishedresorts.

    The Origins

For centuries, tin mining, along with therubber and fishing industries, had madePhuket one of the wealthiest provincesin Thailand. By the late 19th centuryhowever, large-scale commercial tin miningoperations had taken over and offshoredredging and land mining were destroyingmarine life and eroding the soil. Aftermines were depleted, the miners movedon, leaving many pockets of the islandenvironmentally devastated.

When Laguna Resorts & Hotels took overthe abandoned tin mine at Bangtao Bayin 1984, the site resembled a moonscape.

The ground was pockmarked with cratersand littered with piles of blackened soil, discarded machinery and ramshackle huts.

The soil was so leached by chemicals itwas thought the area would never sustainvegetation. In 1977 a United NationsDevelopment Plan team surveying Phuketstourism prospects, wrote off Bangtao Baysaying it was too environmentally damagedto have any development potential. However, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman ofLaguna Resorts & Hotels, then saw thepotential for developing the area into apremier resort and thus Laguna Phuket wasborn.

    The Revival

It took remarkable vision, determinationand US$200 million (then Phukets largestever single investment) to bring this ravagedwasteland back from the dead. Earthmoving equipment levelled the torturedterrain and enormous quantities of fertilisedtopsoil were trucked in to allow replanting ofhardy native plants, such as Casuarina andpalm trees. Fruit and flowering trees wereadded to attract birds and wildlife whilst thelagoons, once mining craters, were stockedwith marine life.

A sophisticated recycling system was builtto handle refuse and sewage disposaland water treatment, eliminating the threatof pollution to the surrounding land andsea. And rather than tapping into Phuketslimited water supply, Laguna draws itswater from several freshwater lakes to runthrough an onsite water treatment plant.

The low-rise hotels at the resort weredesigned to enhance the environmentand reflect the beauty of Thai culture andheritage. Timber has been used effectivelybut sparingly to prevent further depletion of

    Thailands limited forestry resources.

    Wedding Chapel

    The Anniversary

Today, Laguna Phuket spans sixdevelopments, comprising Banyan TreePhuket, Sheraton Grande Phuket, Dusit

Thani Laguna Phuket, Laguna BeachResort, Allamanda Laguna Phuket andLaguna Holiday Club Resort. It alsoincludes residences and townhomes, an18-hole golf course, spas, wedding chapeland shopping village.

Having celebrated its 20th anniversarylast year, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman ofLaguna Resorts and Hotels said, It givesme tremendous satisfaction to see thefruits of our labour blossom into the lushtropical paradise it is today and to seehow, together with my colleagues, wehave preserved the rich heritage unique to

Thailand, imparting the warm hospitalityand romance to all who have had theprivilege of sharing this experience with.

Laguna Phuket steams ahead in its

expansion, launching four new projects.TheLaguna Deluxe Townhomes and DeluxeResidences are two-storey, semi-detachedand detached homes, respectively. TheseDeluxe properties are approximately 30%larger and feature a new architecturaldesign and upgraded home optionspackages, on bigger land plots thanstandard units.

The third project Laguna Village Phase II,includes Residences VI and TownhomeIV, extension of the ever popular LagunaResidences and Townhomes. Theseproperty development consist of nineunits of Residences on land plots rangingfrom 1176 to 1146 square metres, andsixteen Townhomes consisting of eight

units in standard design and eight units indeluxe version, all facing a tropical lagoonwith spectacular views. These projectscommenced in May 2008 and will becompleted in 2010.

Overwhelming demand for the LagunaPhuket Dusit Thani Pool Villas has led to thedevelopment being fully booked six monthsahead of schedule. The second phase of17 villas is situated on the southern sideof the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket Resortbetween a tropical lagoon, lush gardensand a beautiful beach. The villas will havelagoon views with some units looking outonto the Andaman Sea and is expectedto be completed by beginning of 2011. Allof the 17 Dusit Thani Pool Villas in phase IIhave been reserved. Plans for phase II willbe released at the end of this year.

Another exciting development to lookforward to is the launch of Laguna Toursin November 2008. Six private luxury

speedboats and six top-of-the-line vans, will be offering trips to nearby islands suchas Phi Phi, Coral Island and Racha Islands,as well as Phang Nga Bay and the Krabi

Archipelago. Laguna Tours will also offer

land-based excursions around Phuketranging from cultural and shopping tours,to a wide variety of adventure-based tours, which include activities such as Go Cartingand All Terrain Vehicle tours.

    The Future

Laguna Resorts & Hotels work to protectthe environment is still very much a majorpriority, fighting to prevent further beacherosion caused by previous offshore tinmining in Bangtao Bay. Millions of baht arespent every monsoon season to replace themassive amount of sand swept away intothe deep holes on the ocean floor causedby previous dredging.

Laguna Phuket is not only concernedwith the preservation of flora, fauna andecosystems, but also what it calls thehuman environment. The company hasdeveloped a donation program to sustainprojects that bring direct benefits toresidents of nearby villages. These projectsinclude a free pre-school for the childrenof employees and local villagers, medicalservices as well as educational scholarships.

    Awards

Laguna Resorts & Hotels environmentallyresponsible approach to tourism hasgained worldwide recognition. In 1992it received the prestigious InternationalHotel Association and American ExpressEnvironmental Award for its achievementsas an international resort and hoteldevelopment project with a proven recordof environmental conservation. TheInternational Hotel Association is the worldsonly global hotel association, with morethan 3,000 members in 145 countries.
