For many years Banyan Tree has been th e
leading brand of our group, with Angsana
as a secondary brand which has not had
much brand recognition nor market
penetration.
All that is about to change.
Within the short space of several months, a
slew of top-quality resorts will be unveiled,
bearing the Angsana brand.
This July, the Sheraton Grande Laguna
Beach Hotel, for 20 years the largest
resort in our internationally-acclaimed
Laguna Phuket integrated resort, will close
its doors. The hotel will undergo a total
renovation with over US$30 million in
slated improvements. When it re-opens
in December this year with completely
refurbished public areas, restaurants, guest
rooms, and the most in beach club on
the island, the Angsana Laguna Phuket
with its 409 keys will set the bar for all
future Angsana resorts.
Angsana Bintan, Banyan Trees 5-star sister
resort, has just re-opened to widespread
public acclaim after extensive refurbishment
to its 106 rooms and public areas.
Angsana Hangzhou, a new, contemporary
sister to the award-winning Banyan Tree
Hangzhou, will open third quarter 2011.
Its 59 rooms with a Chinese boutique
interior design concept will target younger
holiday-goers.
Angsana Balaclava will be a spa-centric
getaway with 50 suites, pool suites and
villa, setting new standards for boutique
spa resorts in Mauritius come late 2011.
CHAIRMANS MESSAGE
CHAIRMANSMESSAGE
By mid 2012, the 149 room Angsana
Lang Co the most luxurious resort in
Central Vietnam after the Banyan Tree
Lang Co will also open its doors, and
will in many ways, be the most luxurious
Angsana resort with sky villas featuring
penthouse rooftop swimming pools and
other pool suites.
These five resorts opening back-to-back
doubling the number of hotels under
the Angsana brand - mark a new chapter
in our growth.
The Banyan Tree brand has also been active.
In May, we celebrated the opening of our
newest hotel Banyan Tree Macau, in the
integrated resort of Galaxy Macau. This
all-suite urban resort features a Relaxation
Pool in every one of its 246 suites and 10
Pool Villas clearly the most luxurious
resort in Macau.
Elsewhere in China, Banyan Tree lays down
more roots. The Banyan Tree Riverside
Shanghai and Banyan Tree Tianjin will
open this year. Hotel construction will
soon begin in Huangshan, Yangshuo,
Lhasa, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing,
Dali, Jiuzhaigou, and more. By 2015, we
expect to be operating some 20 hotels
in China.
We have garnered some 72 international
awards so far this year. This brings our
overall tally to 725 for the group, crossing
the new milestone of 700 once again
showing strong validation from our guests
of our quality, and continuing value to
our stakeholders.
As for our spas, the growth has been
even faster than our hotels. Our 65th
spa to open the Banyan Tree Spa at
Marina Bay Sands Singapore will be
a homecoming, marking a milestone in
our spa operations, probably among the
largest in the world today.

Global events of recent years seem not
to have affected the growth and progressof China, which continues to march on
strongly.
The AscentThe United Nations World Tourism
Organization (UNWTO) reported that
China welcomed 53 million visitors in
2010, making it the third most-visited
destination worldwide after France and
the United States. It also predicted that
China would be the worlds leading travel
destination by 2018.
There is little wonder why China is one
of the most-visited destinations in the
world the second largest country in the
world, and also one of the most populated,
China offers an unparalleled selection ofheritage sites and culinary arts alongside its
remarkably diverse culture. Moving from
one place to another, the scene changes
from a secluded monastery tucked atop
remote soaring mountains, to bustling
cities with towering skyscrapers.
Soaring NumbersAdd to the equation a burgeoning middle
class that is eager to travel, both abroad
and within China itself.

Latest MilestoneJanuary 2011 marked the successful closing
of the Banyan Tree China Hospitality Fund

The capital commitments for the China
Fund totalled RMB1.07 billion, mostly
invested by high-net-worth individuals

The Li people form one of the 56 officially
recognised ethnic groups in China. Amongst
the earliest settlers of Hainan Island, the
Lis recorded their history and culture using
intricate hand-woven textile patterns as
they had no written language.
Interwoven with their heritage, these
traditional textile techniques are at risk
of extinction as the number of skilled
weavers has dwindled significantly over
recent decades.
FROM A TIME LONG GONEThe Li brocade is regarded as the earliest
form of woven textile in China, dating as
far back as 2,500 years.
Historical records show Chinas legendary
weaver Huang Daopo acquired her
techniques from the Li women in the 13th
century. Born to a poor family, Huang
was a child bride at 12. She fled her
hometown and lived in Hainan with the
Lis, from whom she learnt weaving and
spinning over some 30 years. When she
returned to her native Songjiang district
in Shanghai, Huang passed on her skills,
marking a crucial point in the development
of the Chinese textile industry.
SPINNING A YARNTraditional Li textile techniques involve
spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidering.
Using primitive backstrap looms, the
most distinctive techniques include the
warp ikat and double-sided embroidery,
employing cotton, hemp, and natural dyes.
It takes at least three months to create an
entire costume.
Daughters are taught at a young age by
their mothers through verbal instruction
and demonstration. Each textile pattern
is designed by the Li women by infusing
imagination with their knowledge of
traditional styles.
The textiles play an integral part in
major festivals and occasions, especially
weddings, for which the Li women design
their own dresses.
SAFEGUARDING CULTUREIn the 1950s, there were still 50,000 Li
women engaged in spinning and weaving
as a way of life. 50 years later, fewer than
1,000 know the techniques, with most of
them in their seventies. Causative factors
include limited natural resources, change
in the Lis lifestyle with globalisation and
industrialisation with mechanical looms,
all impacting this glorious and ancient
hand art.

Banyan Trees Concept of Sustainability
Sustainability and CSR guidelines provide aframework for harmonising the constructive
and beneficial outcomes of individual
enterprise with the interests of others.
By pursuing sustainability, firms and
individuals are constrained to internalise
value propositions that help to moderate
their behaviour without the loss of
entrepreneurial efforts.
Under socially responsible operational
guidelines, free market risk and reward
are kept in a more sustainable balance. It
is a check and balance decision making
process for businesses by requiring business
to address the triple bottom line:
a. Theeconomic bottom-linerefers to an
emphasis on financial performance,
not only to long term profit but to the
philosophies behind a companys strategy
or behaviour, the sustainability of its
businesses and its human capital.
b. The environmental bottom-linerefers
to the impact of a companys products
or operations on the environment,
plus the nature of its consumption
and emissions and how the company
is dealing with both.
c. The social bottom-linerefers to how
a company approaches issues such as
cultural, ethnic and gender diversity;
working hours and wages; staff security;
and the companys contribution to
community services and facilities.
Actualising a Sustainability MindsetIn 2007, Banyan Tree rolled out three
group wide external initiatives, Resource
Conservation, Greening Communities,
and Seedlings.
Resource ConservationThis group wide initiative seeks to monitor
and reduce operational impacts of our
resorts and hotels on the environment.
Specifically, we seek to reduce energy
consumption, potable water consumption,
and the amount of waste sent to landfill
at each location. Achievements are
benchmarked against the industry and
externally certified through the EarthCheck
program.
Greening CommunitiesOur resorts have been tasked to plant 2000
new trees per year while working with
local community members, associates, and
guests to create a wider impact by raising
awareness. While this effort may enhance
Meaning, companies must consider
the quality of their relationships with
stakeholders- customers, employees, shareholders, creditors, suppliers, society
as a whole, and our global ecosystems.
A triple bottom-line approach requires
companies to measure and enhance
those relationships on a continuous and
transparent basis in order to create value for
stakeholders. In the long run a companys
stakeholder relationships are intangible
assets which contribute to the companys
very tangible capitalisation value.

its main purpose is to raise awareness of
climate change and the importance of
environmental conservation, especially
within developing communities.
From 2007 through 2010, Banyan Tree
has planted 96,673 trees across Thailand,
China, Indonesia, Maldives, Australia,
Laos, Mexico, and Seychelles. The effort
continues to be rolled out as more resorts
open.
SeedlingsThis group wide initiative aims to support
at-risk young people aged between 12 and
18 by harnessing the core competencies
of our hotels. A three-phase program,
Seedlings provides: trained Banyan Tree
volunteers for 6 year Mentorships with
marginalised youths, Scholarships to
enable continued educations, and finally
2-year paid Internships within the hotel to
give valuable work experience once the
young person makes the adult decision
to enter the workforce.
By the end of 2010, 11 resorts had launched
