Never more a broken screen!Vandalism, burglaries or accidents – if the glass is broken it costs money and time... and even more money. If a windscreen breaks while you work, there is a major threat of a driver being injured by flying glass or objects. With Hammerglass we guarantee a safer environment in the cabin.

6 or 8 mm thickness? For normal work it is more than enough to have 6 or 8 mm thick Hammerglass. It is only when there is a risk of large stones coming at high speed that there is a need for thicker glass screens.

How to order?Hammerglass AB has supplier agreements with all importers and manufacturers. You place the order with your usual service work-shop, which looks after everything including fitting.

Short delivery timeMost screens are in stock. Screens that are not in stock are shipped 1 to 3 days after the order has been placed.

Hammerglass in 2 minutesThe development of Hammerglass AB started in 1993. That time we were working with the city of Gothenburg’s own insurance company Göta Lejon to find a way to reduce the costs of damage to glass. The commission was clearly defined: “Find a solution or we will start boarding up windows with bricks”.

After having developed a system for external fitting of unbreakable win-dow panes we started thinking about developing insulated glass with the same unbreakable quality. The project was successful and Hammerglass can today provide 5 year full warranty on insulated glass. The unique external coating that all Hammerglass window panes are coated with provide the glass with an extremely good scratch resistance and 99.96% UV protection.

What is Hammerglass?Hammerglass is an abrasion resis-tant, chemical-resistant, age-decay resistant polycarbonate sheet – 300 times stronger than glass – and virtu-ally unbreakable. The screens are coated with a thin film of silicon dioxide (this is almost like a thin glass film) which protects against scratches and wear. Normally the windscreen wipers do not wear the glass, but in dusty and sandy envi-ronments we recommend coating the glass with a disposable film. The surface treatment also provides UV protection at 99.96%, which pre-vents the Hammerglass screens from fading or becoming less transparent with time.

Directive from the Swedish Work Environment Authority of December 1, 2010 – Rock and mining activities, AFS 2010:1 Excerpt from the directive:Boulder handling, crushing and mechanical demolition of rocks42 § When hydraulic hammer or other equipment is used to break up boulders or solid rock, mea-sures must be taken to protect operators from dust and explosions of undetonated charges and protect them from being hit by stone fragments.43 § During quarrying generation and spread of dust must be prevented.44 § Measures must be taken so that those working on or adjacent to the crushing facility are pro-tected against stone missiles from a detonating charge.

What specifications should vehicle glazing meet?ABRASION RESISTANcE - The windscreen should not be damaged when used under normal working conditions. However, in harsh working environment we will recommend the installation of a sacrificial film to provide extra protection against abrasion.SHARP OBJEcTS - During rock breaking or metal recycling very sharp objects can come like missiles at the glass. Vehicle glass must be able to withstand such impact. SHOcK WAVES - Screens must remain in their frames in the event of explosions. They must not be pushed in by the pressure wave and should not be sucked out by the vacuum that follows after an explosion.LARGE ROcKS - The screen must remain in place and protect the driver if large rocks hit it at high speed.

New standard for high-risk workAccording to a new act issued by the Swedish Work Environment Authority window screens in construc-tion machinery must be safety tested for the event of undetonated charges, falling rock or heavy duty breakage work.A new standard for windscreens in construction machinery, RABS, contains a collection of tests designed to increase safety during different types of activities and quality tests for scratch resistance and clarity. Screens fitted in steel frames with approved test results in all tests will be labelled with the RABS symbol and with their unique certification number. The new standard meets the specifications given in AFS 2010:1.

ROVED

Meets the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s requirements for protection inside machinery against undetonated charges, falling rock and quarrying. To obtain the label “RABS Approved” window screens must meet specifications in all four tests.

1) R43: ECE Regulation No. 43 (R43): extensive series of tests for vehicle glass, e.g. scratch resistance, UV protection and strength.2) AXE: Sharp objects (EN 356, P8B), for which the screen has resisted 72 impacts from a machine operated axe without being penetrated by the axe.3) BLAST: Shock wave during explosion (EN 13123-2 and EN 13124-2), in which 3 kg TNT has been detonated 3 metres from the screens. All screens are fitted in a steel frame to stop the screen from being pushed into the cabin.4) STONE: An aluminium missile of 1 kg is directed at the screen at a speed of 450 km/h (EN 15152-2). Equivalent to a large rock at high speed.

Stronger than steelAs an extra bonus at the end of the test SP put some stones of a few kg each in front of the explosive charge. The stones made deep cuts in the screens, but nothing more. On the other hand, the stones went straight through the steel plates of the con-tainer – 3 mm cor-ten steel! The container that was used for the test was in fact completely destroyed and moved around by the explosions despite being filled with 20 tonnes of concrete blocks to be stable.

On Monday November 12 SP in Borås carried out a series of explo-sion tests on Hammerglass vehicle screens. The tests were carried out in accordance with EN13124-2 and screens of different designs were fitted in different types of steel frames. 7 explosions were carried out, all between 3 and 5 metre distance.12 mm Hammerglass screens can withstand the pressure wave of 3 kg TNT from 3 metres away!

conclusion“What we have learnt from all these explosion tests is that it is not enough – not enough at all – to just have protection in the front windscreen,” says the company’s managing direc-tor Bengt Nilsson.“If there is a serious explosion, the side windows will be pushed into the cabin regardless of whether they are made of toughened glass or laminated glass. That is why we are working on developing Hammerglass solutions also for side screens and rear windows.

The screens are intact, but a test container is destroyed...

Successful explosion TEST!

Sacrificial film for extra protection - Extend the lifetime of a screen with a disposable coating:Hammerglass screens are coated with a thin film of silicon dioxide (almost like a thin film of glass), which protects against scratching and wear. Normally windscreen wipers do not scratch screens, but during quarrying and when screens are exposed to gravel and sandy environments we recom-mend coating them with a sacrificial film. This is a consumable product and can be replaced as required depending on the level of wear.

The latest addition – 12 mm IR for machinery in tough working environment – is a hit. Hammer-glass IR reduces the heat coming into the cabin by over 55%. Our previous 6 mm IR reduced heat by about 45%.

The IR glass has the same performance as other Hammerglass for strength, chemical resistance and scratch resistance, but with the difference that it reduces heat penetration. Hammerglass has 6 mm green tinted and 12 mm grey tinted IR glass in stock.

Angled screens in one piece

The latest in vehicle glazing: the angled front windscreen is made from one single Hammerglass sheet.

“By making screens in one piece we gain a lot of advantages,” says the technical manager of Ham-merglass.“The fitting takes a fraction of the time compared to ordinary glazing. Not only because the weight is halved, but above all because the screen is trans-ported as a flat screen, then it is cut during fitting, a small seal is placed in a groove in the edge of the screen and then we push the screen into the frame. The work is done in half an hour.
