In order to make clear whether or not a particular machine has been fitted with safety glass and satisfies a variety of requirements, the industry has agreed to assign construc-tion machinery to various protection classes. A machine in Protection Class 3 has been approved for operation in situations where there is a risk of undetonated explosives (so-called duds).

A machine in Protection Class 2 must not work with ma-terials which may contain explosives, but is nevertheless equipped with driver protection which copes with really tough stresses and strains.

Hammerglass has been tested and approved in accordance with these protection levels and offers solutions and an equipment package for all types of construction machinery.

All companies bear an overall responsibility for the safety and security of their employees. If there are manifest safety risks in the work environment, the employer has an obliga-tion to design out these risks.

Construction machinery operating in tough environments MUST be fitted with safety glass which will withstand both the impact of large rocks and detonations (undetonated explosives among piles of rocks). In order to deal with haz-ards of this type it is required that the windscreen be fitted in a robust steel frame, with both screen and frame being tested and classified in accordance with the RABS standard (see page 6). The remaining screens must also be in safety glass and must satisfy the requirements set out in the standard EN 356 P8B. See Hammerglass website for more information, videos and test results.

MORE AND MORE CUSTOMERS ARE ASKING FOR MACHINES IN PROTECTION CLASS 3

In wheel loaders and excavators offering Hammerglass Protec-tion Class 3, the windscreen consists of 12 mm Hammerglass fitted in a RABS frame. In the remaining screens 8 mm or 12 mm Hammerglass are used.

By using 12 mm all around, the noise level in the cab is reduced even further (up to 25% noise reduction compared with stand-ard screens).

More and more customers are now asking for Protection Class 3 and are also paying extra for machines provided with this level of protection. The investment cost is in the region of € 8000 - € 13 000, depending upon the type of machine, the number of screens and the installation time. The RABS solution has been explosion tested and FOPS tested and replaces the metal grille on the front and/or on the roof.

PROTECTION CLASS 2

For a safer driver environment where quarrying and boulder hand-ling are being carried out and there is a risk of flying rocks stones, and also of vandalism. The original screens are replaced with at least 8 mm Hammerglass, which is fitted in the same way as the original screen.

Windscreen: 8 mm Hammerglass, split or non-split

Remaining screens: 8 mm or 12 mm Hammerglass

SACRIFICIAL SCREEN

Protects the screen in the RABS frame during hammering or when quarrying is being carried out.

Windscreen: Sacrificial screen in 4 mm Hammerglass fitted to the RABS frame with cross knobs

PROTECTION CLASS 1

For simpler tasks where there is a risk of stone chippings. Usually the windscreen and/or side screen on excavators, wheel loaders, tractors etc. The original screen is replaced with 8 mm Hammer-glass, which is fitted in the same way as the original screen.

Windscreen: 8 mm Hammerglass, split / non-split

Boom side window: 8 mm Hammerglass

PROTECTION CLASS 3

Where a single machine is operating and there is a risk of unde-tonated explosives – but no risk of explosions from the side, and where quarrying is being carried out or where there is a risk of rock fall.

Windscreen: 12 mm Hammerglass mounted in an explosion-tested steel frame, RABS-approved

Remaining screens: 8 mm or 12 mm Hammerglass

SMART SOLUTION FOR QUARRYING

In a RABS frame the 12 mm thick Hammerglass panel is bolt-ed securely to the frame. In order to prevent the screen from being chipped during quarrying work, a sacrificial screen in 4 mm Hammerglass is fitted to the outside of the frame. When such damage to the sacrificial screen reaches a certain level, the driver can replace the screen within no more than 10 minutes – at a cost of around € 250. This solution involving a sacrificial screen is optional.

SMART FILM SOLUTION FOR GRITTY ENVIRONMENTS

If the windscreen wiper frequently has to operate with grit and mud on the screen, the screen becomes scratched. We can provide the screen with a sacrificial film which is re-placed as and when necessary. This saves wear and tear on the screen and ensures that the driver always has a clear view ahead. The driver may replace the film himself, or re-quest that replacement be carried out at regular intervals.

The original screens are replaced with 8 mm Hammerglass and fitted in the same way as the original screen. Sacrificial films are used in gritty and muddy environments to protect the Hammerglass screen.

In order to protect the 12 mm screen in the RABS frame for example during hammering, a 4 mm Hammerglass sacrificial screen is fitted as a protective measure.

RABS CLASSIFICATIONRABS is a collective term for a group of tests and certifications for construc-tion machinery. The acronym RABS stands for R43, Axe test, Blast test and Stone test.

In the explosion test EN 13124-2 EXR2, 3 kg TNT is detonated at a distance of 3 metres (corresponding to 200 kg dynamite at a distance of 14 metres). In order to withstand the pressures and vacuum waves generated in the explosion, the screen must be bolted securely into a 5 mm steel frame, which in turn is fitted to the grille fixing brackets on the cab.

The R43 test shows that the screen does not exhibit any optical defects, that it withstands chemicals and that it will not be scratched by the wind-screen wiper (in a sand-free environment).

HAMMER-FACTSHammerglass is a nano-coated polycarbonate sheet, 300 times stronger than glass and virtually unbreakable. Hammerglass withstands both cleaning with acetone and wear and tear from windscreen wipers in a normal work environment. For workplaces where there is excessive sand or grit in the air there is a special sacrificial film which the driver himself can replace as and when required. During hammering and in quarrying work a sacrificial screen is recom-mended – read more about sacrificial screens in this brochure.Hammerglass AB leads the way in the development of unbreakable glass solutions for vehicles.
