    20 May – Much has been achieved to improve the rights of indigenous peoples, but conflicts on their lands and territories, and the lack ofinclusion of their voices in peace processes, remain a challenge, theUnited Nations Secretary-General an !i-moon said today at theclosing of a t"o-"eek forum#

    $% call on all Member States, on indigenous peoples and the entire UNsystem to "ork together to address these and other serious concerns,&said Mr# an in his last speech to the 'ermanent (orum on %ndigenous%ssues#

    e recalled that in September 1223, Member States adopted the UN4eclaration on the 5ights of %ndigenous 'eoples, and in 12+6, the UNconvened the 12+6 7orld 8onference on %ndigenous 'eoples#

    Stressing that indigenous peoples are firmly on the UN agenda, and they "ere fully engaged in negotiations for the 1292:genda for Sustainable 4evelopment and the 'aris :greement on climate change, it is no" crucial that they also participatein and contribute to implementation and follo"-up#

    )he clinic relies on the help of volunteers from the %4' community itself, kno"n as community health promoters, "ho areselected and trained by :lmanar to identify malnourished children#

    $)hese volunteers are accepted by the community# )hey kno" the traditions and the language, and can communicate easily"ith community members,& eAplained 4r# Nadia, adding that the maEority of them are young "omen#

    Bach community health promoter is responsible for monitoring about 12 houses in the Fabarona open area and periodicallyvisits them to see if children are sho"ing any sign of malnutrition#

    $%f a child is malnourished, he or she is referred to :lmanar by the community health promoters and treated at the clinic# %fthe child has other medical complications in addition to malnutrition, he or she is sent to the nearest hospital for medicalsupport,& eAplained 4r# Nadia#

    :ccording to 4r# Nadia, from :pril 12+ to March 12+@, over 9,222 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition andover 3,222 children suffering from moderate acute malnutrition "ere treated at the clinic, "hich also develops preventivemeasures, including raising the a"areness of best practices for nutrition, breast-feeding and treatment of %K and otherdiseases among %4' mothers#

    %n its first year, the clinic "as funded by the UN 8hildren*s (und >UN%8B(?#

    $7e "rote a proposal# 7e approached UN%8B(# :nd then once "e received the funds, "e started treating the children,& 4r# Nadia eAplained#

    %n 12+, the clinic "as mainly funded by the S(, "hich considered !hartoum state to be a humanitarian priority for %4'sand refugees# ut as a result of the Febel Marra crisis this year the situation has changed#

    $:fter this month, there is no guarantee for anything# 7e "on*t receive any funding because !hartoum state is not a priorityanymore for S( because of ne" emergencies,& said 4r# Nadia#

    Mr# 8hristiaens is "ell a"are of the difficulties that come "ith having to redefine the funding priorities of S( on a yearly basis#

    $S( planning is done on an annual basis,& he eAplained, adding that multi-year programming "ould allo" S( to providemore stable support to – and invest more in R– early-recovery, resilience-building and durable solutions, as "ell as to ensurethat ne" crises do not take a"ay funds from longer-term responses#
