    21 April  – ?nternational guidelines being develo#ed by a United Nations agency and new technologies are e0#ected to boost eorts to

    cut down levels o abandoned ish gear, which oten continues tocarry out the ca#ture #rocess, entangling ish and other marineanimals in its nets, a #henomenon known as =ghost ishing'

    What is known as abandoned, lost and otherwise discarded ishinggear makes u# a signiicant #ortion o all debris in the oceans,accounting or about one-tenth o all marine litter, translating intohundreds o thousands o tonnes annually'

    $rowing concern over this #roblem, cou#led with the increasingavailability o new technologies, has led the UN Food and Agriculture6rgani7ation %FA6& to begin develo#ing international guidelines on
