UNITS

ULTRALISKBearing little resemblance to the docile Brontoliths from which they were evolved, Ultralisks are the most powerful of the Zerg ground forces. They serve as the backbone of the Swarms armies and are as dangerous as any armored vehicle. These massive monstrosities are used as living battering rams against their enemies. Their large bone-like scythes allow them to tear through most known substances with ease. The Ultralisks genetic material has been subjected to countless tests and experiments, and only the final viable code is used by Zerg Larvae to morph into new Ultralisks.

Ultralisk - Game - StarCraft II

GENERAL STRATEGY

Superior ground-attacking melee unit. Can deliver area of effect ground attacks against multiple targets. Extremely potent against basic combat units (Zealots, Marines, Zerglings). High armor and hit points. Can increase armor with Chitinous Plating upgrade. Can burrow with Burrow upgrade. Massive units such as the Ultralisk has have the ability to break Force Fields. Combo this ability with units that are normally weak vs. Force Fields such as Zerglings. Utralisks are immune to stuns and mind control.

COUNTERMEASURES

VS

Terran

Anti-ground air units like Banshees and Battlecruisers can do immense damage to Ultralisks while completely avoiding their attacks. Spreading out ground infantry units can help minimize damage from Ultralisks cleave attacks Anti-armored ground units like Marauders can also crack through Ultralisks reinforced carapaces as long as they can keep the Ultralisk at range by kiting it with Stimpacks movement speed increase. Thors 250mm Strike Cannons ability can kill an Ultralisk in one shot. Siege tanks Tanks can focus down Ultralisks while also doing damage to other Zerg units nearby.

VS

Zerg

Air-to-ground units, like Mutalisks and Brood Lords, can damage Ultralisks without risking any retribution. Hydralisks can attack Ultralisks at range while spreading out to avoid the cleave attack.

VS

Protoss

Stalkers and Immortals are effective counters against Ultralisks. They deal extensive damage, and benefit from exceptional mobility (in the Stalkers case) or armor (in the Immortals case). As mentioned above, spreading out ground infantry units can help minimize damage from Ultralisks cleave attacks. Flying units, such as Void Rays, Carriers and even Motherships, can perform extremely effectively against Ultralisks, who wont be able to reach them and will suffer from their attacks.

honestly, from the standpoint of an all-race-player i think ultralisks are U.P. they get mowed down so quick that i think the price equivalent in zerglings is better!

stalkers are not the counter to ultralisks unless you want to counter the ultralisk's hunger problem

Hmm strong against marauders... I kited ultras so hard with marauders one time I got swore at by the Zerg. True story. Give them a 200m 200g speed upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea. When Zerg players have that much resource, they deserve to win.

JetfirePrime

2/19/11 7:02 PM

@Koan: I don't need Marauders I got tanks, Thors and Banshees.

@JetfirePrime: well any air unit that attacks ground

pacifist

2/13/11 7:55 PM

whats better these or brood lords

Cavyking

2/14/11 4:19 PM

@pacifist: broodlords

JetfirePrime

2/11/11 10:59 PM

This thing got more upgraded armor than even Battlecruisers due to that extra 2 armor bonus from that Cavern.

2/10/11 6:54 AM

mouse over the two upgrades that only the ultra can get... because it can apearently get zerg flyer attack level 3, and..... an upgrade upgrade writen in code?

Omni

Herpderpalisk: Good on maps where there are no choke points.

O wait....

natch

2/16/11 6:47 PM

@Omni: These maps hate us.

A nice addition to the Ultralisk would simply be the ability to push enemy units out of the way. The same way they can walk through force fields, I think they should be able to walk through groups of enemies. This would be useful for two reasons, a) it could split up enemy groupings, giving the zerg a change to pick off smaller groupings and give lings a better surround, and b) it would give the ultra's an better chance of making good use of their splash damage.

Rafabaca

2/9/11 7:51 AM

@CloudS: they do do that already, but only if the units are not being given commands, although they got that speed buff, they're still pretty slow

Hakutsuru

1/30/11 5:48 AM

pretty much weak against anything it can't attack

Rafabaca

2/9/11 7:53 AM

@Hakutsuru: yep, sorta like how im weak agianst ghost and bullets

Swig

1/30/11 5:41 AM

Ultras need a serious buff.

llKenZyll

2/2/11 12:57 AM

@Swig: They seriously do. They are only good against Terran mech and a fungal growth heavy zerg (both of which are very rare in their respective matchups)

Frezer

2/16/11 4:01 AM

@llKenZyll: dude your pic is awesome but you are still in bronze

SecretCobraz

1/29/11 7:20 AM

You are better off in some games going Banelings

Ginta

1/28/11 3:37 AM

Cant hit air units either-complete waste of minerals and vespene

Darkaiser

1/27/11 9:17 PM

lol this bad ASSs can't kill a single thor XP

BudMeister

1/27/11 8:32 PM

One of those units that I assumed was going to be totally awesome when I first got the game. Tried them three times without getting one close enough to do its attack animation...

yeah, this guy "the backbone of the Swarms armies and are as dangerous as any armored vehicle."

in a group... didn't get close enough to get to use its attack animation on basic tier one ground units...

Fergilicious

1/18/11 9:22 PM

Who votes for ultralisks to have an anti-air attack say I !!!

Cavyking

1/24/11 7:09 PM

@Fergilicious: no

Kerplode

1/25/11 12:42 AM

@Fergilicious: Yeah, and let's give Hydras siege range! And make Drones invincible!

GhandiEAGLE

1/25/11 6:31 AM

@Fergilicious: oh yes, and while we are at that, we can make the omegalisk a unit and then have it cost the same as a zergling

Ironspider

2/8/11 2:20 PM

@Fergilicious: And lets make the brutalisk tier one!

Frezer

2/16/11 4:04 AM

@Fergilicious: and while were at it lets make hybrids for free

SinisterGot it!!

SKTroop

1/15/11 1:50 AM

Thors are op? Really? Thors are crap these days. They were meant to counter light air units to a good extent, but with the magic box it's impossible. Sure, they're good against other high tier (ground) units, but for the most part they're pretty bad.

Zherik

1/27/11 9:35 PM

@SKTroop: Bronze players don't have the right to say anything regarding balance. Shut up.

HitmanMonkey

1/28/11 2:18 PM

@Zherik: lmao...nothing like elitism in a discussion about a video game

@Zherik: Nice Gold, Silver, and Bronze on you Zherik...leave SKTroop alone.

DrBoom

2/2/11 3:27 AM

@SKTroop: tehy werent meant for countering air units, that was a given thing to them to make them seem more.... BIG BAD ASS YEA! they were meant to be ur big bad killing machine, isnt it 30 dmg? then attacks 2...wow 60 dmg to every target, not just armored....yea that sucks...

hasaboo

1/14/11 12:58 AM

I realize that everybody says thor wins vs ultra, one of the points of an ultra is SPLASH damage. Anyway, the thor costs way more recources. (duh)

icephoenix

1/14/11 4:56 AM

@hasaboo: thors do win against ultralisk becasue thors are op

SKTroop

1/15/11 3:28 PM

icephoenix

i wonder how tough these would be with mass hydralisk and some banelings (and i tech my armies as far as i can)

pomogranit

feel bad for marines in that pic above lol
