A July Letter from Canon MichaelThe latest craze among children is the fidget spinner. If you’re not sure what these are, they are described on Wikipedia as a ‘stress relieving toy’. They have 3 ‘blades’ and a bearing in the centre that makes them spin and are thought to be able to relieve stress and anxiety. They have become one of those ‘must have’ toys and most schools have now had to ban them com-pletely or impose rules to restrict their use. Imagine my surprise when I realised that a fidget spinner would be a great way of illustrating the Trinity!Longstanding members of the church struggle to understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity; how 1 God can be 3 persons and how 3 persons can be 1 God! In our church schools, the guidelines for our regular acts of worship state; ‘Collective Worship has a strong focus on God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Learners recognise this and talk about it with an impressive degree of understanding’! Hence the challenge to the clergy of trying to explain the concept of the Trinity! I used the fidget spinner recently in Dursley C of E Primary Academy where the children seemed quite impressed that I should have one, let alone know how to use it. I tried to show them how, although the 3 blades were all spinning separately, at the same time they were all spinning together because they were joined and were dependent on each other. There was a sense of the 3 being in relationship with one another and that’s what the Trinity teaches us; the importance of relationship; of working together in harmony.I shall find an opportunity to use my fidget spinner in Uley C of E Primary school where recently I talked with the children during their worship about Pentecost; the birthday of the Church. We even had a modest birthday cake complete with candles and one of the children, who happened to be celebrating her birthday on that day, blew the candles out for us. I told the children the story of how the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus’ first followers and gave them gifts that they didn’t know they had; gifts which helped them to spread the good news about Jesus so that more and more people came to follow him. ‘The Church’ – that is all the people of God – was born. The Diocese of Gloucester’s new vision, entitled LIFE, identifies the impor-tance of the church working creatively with local schools. I’m very much enjoying my new role as a governor of Uley school and getting to know the children and staff there as well as the other governors and parents. Towards the end of this month the school will hold its special service for the Year 6 leavers in St Giles church. The leavers will be presented with a bible to mark their time in Uley as they prepare to move on to their new schools. As we wish them all well, we will pray for God’s blessing on them as they begin an exciting new part of their life journey. With my prayersCanon Michael Cozens

Our next session, on July 5th, is 'own choice' and this always comes up with an enjoyable and varied programme. It already includes music by Weber, Schubert, Faure and Gorecki, but there will be more once the full programme is put together. After that we break off for the summer, before re-turning on October 4th for the new season. We will continue to meet on the first Wednesday of each month, from 2.00-4.00pm at the Pavilion. New members continue to be welcome.Call Andy on 860043 for any more details

ULEY PARISH COUNCIL UPDATEProposal by Vodafone/Telefonica to install a radio mast in UleyUley Parish Council have recently been approached by a company representing Vodafone/Telefonica who are looking for a site to install a mast in the village. This was part of a process of pre-application consultation on a site that has since been withdrawn. In response, the Parish Council has sent the following letter:“You have asked for the views of Uley Parish Council (UPC) in respect of the pro-posal by Vodafone/Telefonica (working as CTIL) to install a new mobile communi-cations radio base station to serve the Uley area.Having considered the matter, the consensus view of UPC is to have no objection in principle to the proposed service improvement but to stress that any devel-opment can only be acceptable provided that visual and other environmental impacts are absolutely minimized. In this respect, we draw attention to Guideline UO6 of our adopted Community Design Statement which states that: “Any communication mast requiring plan-ning permission must blend into the landscape without demonstrable harm to the identified character and the sensitivity to change”. This is a Supplemental Planning Document to the adopted Stroud District Local Plan (2015) and is aligned with the Cotswolds AONB Management Plan 2013-18. You should note that most of Uley is designated a Conservation Area and that the village lies en-tirely within the AONB.Although the proposed site at Uley Valley Contractors has now been withdrawn we can advise that an application at this site would have attracted strenuous op-position in the community due to its prominence in the open centre of the valley. Another similar proposal would no doubt attract public opposition and could not be supported by UPC.We question why consideration has not been given to sharing the location used by EE/BT/Orange (approximately at NGR: 3788 1964). Users report good to excel-lent 4G coverage from this operator over most of Uley village, so the range of 1 to 2 km does not seem to be an issue. The arqiva TV tower at this location might offer a shared structure and other service infrastructure is clearly in place.Should CTIL come forward with a new proposal you can be assured that UPC will engage constructively in pre-application consultation, but we also consider it essential to widen consideration of the issues within the village at the earliest op-portunity. We would therefore expect to be offered a technically informed public presentation of any further proposed solution at the pre-application stage”.

Seasonal Surroundings : JulyIn the June issue I talked about Beatrix Potter and since then I have been lucky enough to visit her house in the Lake Dis-trict. I've always wanted to go there as it seemed like my dream house; pretty as a picture and in the perfect setting to create something magical (as she did) with its cosy interior, kitchen garden and stunning location. Strange as it seems, when I was actually there wandering around the house, grounds and village, I felt as if I was in Uley. I already had everything surrounding me at home that I had coveted for so long and I didn't even realise it – it shows how easy it is to take all that we have in our beautiful valley for granted.

When I got home, I decided to look at things around me in more detail, as Potter did in her paintings, so I lay on the grass in my garden and watched the insects. It was the busy bees that caught my attention, sweet and hardworking with their pouches of pol-len on their hind legs (called corbicula or pollen baskets) full to bursting at this time of year. It is only certain bees that have pollen baskets – others have scopa (dense hair on their back legs to collect pollen in).

I had heard of the plight of the bumblebee but didn't understand the cause or conse-quences, so I looked at the website for The Bumblebee Conservation Trust https://bum-blebeeconservation.org (membership just £20 a year), where I learned that up to 97% of our flower-rich grassland has been lost since the 1930s. This has had a devastating affect on the bee population, which is dependent on flowers to survive. “Two species have become nationally extinct and several others have declined dramatically." As bees are so important in helping to pollinate our crops, a number of farmers are making simple changes to their farming practices to encourage more wild flowers to grow on their land. The Trust has lots of advice on how to do this. We can all help by planting bee-friendly plants in our gardens, allotments or window boxes – look at the RHS Perfect for Pollinators lists to find plants that both you and the bees will enjoy: https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/conservation-biodiversity/wildlife/perfect-for-pollinators

If you find a bee that is grounded and needs reviving, a solution of 50% water and 50% sugar may help (not honey as you may pass on bee viruses if you give them honey that isn't their own). Put a tiny drop of the mixture onto a spoon near their head (making sure the bee doesn't drown). Drinking this can sometimes give the bee enough energy-to fly away.

Things I am looking forward to this month: day lilies, poppies, sunflowers, crocosmia, nasturtiums, agapanthus and watching the grass being made into bales on the Millennium Green.Emily Mathisen

Rhubarb VodkaYou will need• 600g rhubarb • 200g caster sugar• 4-5 strips of orange zest • 1 litre vodka

MethodSlice the rhubarb stalks in half, length-ways and then into 1.5-2” pieces and put in the jar. Add the sugar, the orange zest and vodka. Seal and store in a dark cupboard for 6-8 weeks. During this time turn or gently shake the jar every now and then to dissolve the sugar and redistribute the rhubarb. Strain the vodka through a muslin, then transfer to a sterilised bottle. Using your vodka….• Have chilled in shot glasses• Put a shot in a flute glass and fill up with chilled sparkling wine• Drizzle a little over dairy ice-cream

Rhubarb CordialYou will need• 250g caster sugar• 275g rhubarb, cut into 1 inch pieces• 300ml cold water• 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped• juice of half a lemon

Method1. Put the sugar, fruit and water into a preserving pan (or large pan) & Set on a low heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. 2. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn up the heat and bring to the boil. Allow to boil for 3 – 4 minutes before turning off the heat. 3. Carefully break the fruit up a little with the back of the spoon then set aside until the liquid is cool. 4. Strain through a muslin and transfer to a sterilised bottle. 5. Make up the cordial to drink with sparkling or still water.

Notes:The cordial will keep in a sterilised glass bottle in the fridge for a couple of weeks. This also freezes well, in a sterilised plastic container - leave plenty of room in the container for the liquid to expand as it freezes.Jenny Russell

WI DIARY

Tore Fauske was the speaker for our May meeting and he told of his childhood during the last war, in German occupied Norway. He told of the hardships and difficulties, and shockingly, of how the Norwegian collaborators were more to be feared than the Germans. However, he managed to find humour in spite of the grimness of his subject and made us laugh throughout the talk.

We can announce the birth of another book group in our WI. bringing the number up to 4. Most groups get their books from the Library, but over the years sets of books have been bought and the scheme to share these amongst the groups is now up and running.

This year we are offering our members the chance to visit Tyntesfield, south of Bristol. Rather than hire a coach we are going in a flotilla of cars which keeps the cost down in these austere times.

Just as well as some of us are splashing out on a posh lunch with the WI Racing Club at Cheltenham Racecourse. Sally Lamerton

Village Agent News for July 2017I was just looking online at information about how the Local Authority work out care home fees for individuals, with the intention of writing about how it is worked out. How-ever I realise that it is very complex, and different according to an individual’s situation. If the Local Authority is arranging a care home for an individual they will do a means test to decide how much should be paid towards it. As a general rule if a person has capital and income above £23,250 they are likely to have to contribute to the cost. But it is really not as straightforward as that and there are sev-eral situations when things can be different to this, and the reasons are too numerous to discuss here. If you would like to know more about this subject please let me know and I will visit you to discuss it in more detail.Whilst I was browsing online I came across a couple of little stories that made me smile so I am going to share them with you in the hope that it will amuse others too.1. Two 100-year-olds who share the same birthday went on their first ever blind date together to mark their big day. They were brought together after home support staff realised that they shared the same memorable birthday, and they set them up with a blind date at a supermarket café. The date went well; he serenaded her by singing “Ave Maria” which she said that she thoroughly enjoyed. They both had a wonderful time and say that they would like to continue to meet up.2. A retired bus driver from Dorset has taken his passion for buses to the next level by transforming a broken mobility scooter. Apparently he spent just £40 to transform the scooter into a “dinky decker” double decker bus. It is pictured on Facebook, a mini bright yellow bus that is powered by the mobility scooter! He can be seen tootling around his home town in his colourful contraption. Penny French Tel: 07776 245 726. Email: [email protected]

Thank you and goodbye! At the end of the summer term, after working in the of-fice at Uley Primary School for almost 28 years, I will be shutting down my computer one last time and retiring.I would therefore like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all of the children, families and other members of the community who have made my time at Uley such a fantastic experience. I will take with me many happy memories that I will always treasure; sharing laughs and gathering some truly unforgettable moments along the way.I will really miss the children and their ability to always brighten my day, and the Christmas cake creations that the Y6s always managed to come up with will stay long in the memory and not always for their artistic ability! So I say a sad goodbye and thank you all so much.Jan Saunders

Please Join Uley Valley Mast Group!Vodafone/Telefonica (02) are seeking to improve mobile coverage in Uley. Their recent proposal to erect a new mast in the valley was withdrawn after the landowner decided not to proceed, but new proposals are expected. The Parish Council has asked Voda-fone why they could not simply share the existing EE mast, and expressed concern about any new mast in the centre of the valley. A copy of the Parish Council‘s letter can be seen on Page 7 of this newsletter, in the Village Shop and on its website (www.uleyparishcouncil.gov.uk), where it will post any new developments.

In parallel, we have set up the Uley Valley Mast Group to share intelligence and pro-vide an additional channel of communication with Vodafone (who have said they want to consult “local community groups”). The Group does not want to obstruct improved coverage, but does want to see mast sharing (or new technologies such as small cells, if these are less obtrusive) considered before a new mast. If a new mast does prove necessary, then the Group wants it to go in the least visually obtrusive position possi-ble.

The Group believe that Vodafone will take more care about finding an optimal solution if we stand up to be counted. Please join the Group – which already has 27 members – by contacting Mary or Thoss Shearer on 01453 860730 or [email protected].
