A March Letter from Canon Michael

Last month the Churchwardens, Jo and David, wrote about ‘entering a new era’, which sounds quite momentous! However, for the churches of Uley, Owlpen and Nympsfield there is cer-tainly a sense of a new beginning as we enter a period of a change as we move towards uniting with the parish of Dursley. I say ‘we’ because this is a new beginning for me now that the Bishop of Gloucester has appointed me as Interim Minister for Uley, Owlpen and Nympsfield. This effectively means that I am now your parish priest, having taken over from Revd Diana just a day after her final service.

As Jo and David wrote last month, very unusually there has been no vacancy (or what used to be called an interregnum) whilst a new priest is recruited and appointed. This is because it had already been decided that the parish of Uley, Owlpen and Nympsfield would join with the parish of Dursley to create a new united benefice. I hope that the legal process which we have to go through to make that happen might be completed by the Autumn. One of my jobs is to steer that process along and as that happens we will need to think about what the new united benefice will be like; how it will be administered and run, what the pattern of services will be across the five churches, who will take those services and how we will manage our finances. These are just some examples of the practical questions that will need to be considered.

During these next few months I do not expect there to be any major changes to services, to service patterns or to the different activities and events that are already planned. My col-leagues in Dursley, who will also be members of the new united benefice, will be helping me by taking some of the church services during the next few months. At the moment my ‘job description’ is as ‘Interim Minister’ and this is very much an interim period. It’s a time for me to begin get to know people in the church and also in the wider communities and for you to meet me and get to know me. If you see me out and about, please do say ‘hello’ and introduce yourself. I will be taking up the ex-officio foundation role on the governing body of Uley C of E primary school and I’m looking forward to meeting the children and the staff and working with them.

If we haven’t already met, you might be wondering, ‘who is this Canon Michael Cozens?’ I have been priest-in-charge of Dursley (St James and St Mark’s) since July 2014. Before that I was in Cheltenham for over 17 years and my last role there was as Team Rector of North Chel-tenham, an area that stretched from the town centre out towards Tewkesbury and included the racecourse. I am married to Gill who is a secondary school teacher and we have two grown up children. Anna is also a teacher, working in a primary school in North Yorkshire and she is getting married in May up in York. I am preparing to do the ‘proud Dad role’ of walking her up the aisle and trying not to get too emotional! Simon is in his final year of university in Sheffield where he has been studying Sports Science. He is definitely the sporty one in our family!

That is just a small part of my story and I look forward to meeting many of you and perhaps hearing about and sharing a little bit of your stories as well. Please do contact me if there is anything I can do for you. As well as the contact number in this magazine, you can email me on [email protected].

With my prayers and best wishes,Canon Michael Cozens

Welcome to the March edition of the Uley Village News - we hope you enjoy it. Changes are afoot as we say a big thank you to Bex and to Terry for their hard work over the years, we hope we can keep up their momentum; we say farewell to Rev. Diana and wish her and Peter well in their new home and say a big hello and welcome to Canon Michael Cozens.

While on the topic of hellos we welcome a new regular contribution from Emily Mathisen, bringing us insight into our seasonal surround-ings, and on the topic of goodbyes we thank Giedrius for his many cover images which we’ve all enjoyed. We hope you enjoy this, our first contribution, and look forward to sharing Village News with you over the months ahead.

If you have questions or contributions please get in touch using [email protected] with very best wishes, Becky & Kate

Hello again,

Today I am going to tell you a bit about Crimestoppers. I know that we have all seen it on the telly but there is, of course, lots of work going on in the background and they need us, the public, to help. Some statistics are; that they have received vital crime information that has led to 11 arrests each day, one person charged with mur-der every 8 days, 93,000 pieces of usable information received in the last year, and they have made over 3,700 “most wanted” fugitive arrests since 2005. Since 1988 Crimestoppers has helped recover over £130m of stolen goods, nearly 40,000 people arrested and charged and over £330m worth of drugs seized. Of course they couldn’t do such a great job without the help of the general public, and they want to remind people we can give information on crime anonymously. We can tell them about crime or criminals. Information given by phone or online cannot be traced and individuals would not have to go to court to give a statement. No one will ever know who called. The telephone calls can even be translated on request. This all means that if anyone should ever need to give information about a crime it can be done safely and anony-mously. Their number is 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org The other week I found myself talking with two young men who were working on a new website for the Environment Agency to build a better flood information service for the public. When I got home I checked out this website which can be found at; www.gov.uk/environment and countryside/ (flooding and extreme weather). You can find out if you are at risk of flooding, sign up for flood warnings, get the flood history for a property in England based on their records, which would be helpful if consid-ering moving to a different property. Also, for anyone who has a disability or needs extra help you can ask your local council if you can be put on a list to get extra help during a flood. There is a Floodline phone number: 0345 988 1188 which is a 24 hour service.

There is a “company” at present knocking on doors in the Stroud area offering free boilers and saying it is part of a Government Scheme, he has been asking to see house deeds. I don’t know of any such scheme and I feel very concerned about show-ing house deeds to someone knocking on the door. If anyone should get such a caller please don’t let them in or show them any documentation. Phone the police on 101. If they are legitimate they will be happy to leave information and contact details with you for you to browse at your leisure. Always talk to someone you know and trust, or maybe the CAB or myself before making an agreement with a workman or company that you don’t know.

WI DIARY FEBRUARY 2017

Not often one finds oneself sitting between the descendent of a sheep stealer and distant relative of Anne Boleyn! These amazing revelations came to light during our talk from Malcolm Sadler about family trees and the origins of names, a sort of ‘who do you think you are’ pres-entation. He brought some hefty reference books and members en-joyed looking up their origins and discovering whether their forebears had ever been considered to be able archers or swordsmen capable of defending the realm if called upon.

Several of us enjoyed a pub lunch followed by a stroll on a soggy day through the snowdrop drifts of Kingscote, and a group went to Chel-tenham to see ‘The Play that went Wrong’ at the Everyman and came away with severe face ache from laughing so much.

A HUGE BIG THANK YOU FROM REVD DIANA

“So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. For we are God’s servant, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building”.

1 Corinthians 3.7,9

I can’t begin to say how much Peter and I have appreciated all your good wishes, cards and gen-erous gifts as we said goodbye to you and to the parish. It began with the lovely farewell school assembly with the children’s cards, prayers and flowers and then the final Sunday morning Candlemas Service to which so many of you came. Then afterwards at the farewell reception the hall was so filled with well-wishers that it was rather like the feeding of the five thousand! I can only say thank you to all who prepared the delicious food and made the arrangements beforehand.

My sincere thanks for your wonderful gifts. Flowers, a most beautiful garden bench, plus cushions! The cases of wine for Peter and the generous garden tokens, which I will use to buy two trees for our garden in Devon, as a constant reminder of you and the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside.

If I begin to thank any one person, then the list will never end. However I would like to say a special thank you to the churchwardens, Jo Rymer and David Valentin, for their unfailing kindness and support to Peter and me and our family, but most of all for their faithfulness in the ministry we all share, but falls most heavily upon them.

We all now face a new future; it has been a privilege to serve you as your parish priest in Uley and Owlpen and Nympsfield. As we continue on the journey, with God’s grace all things will be well, and all manner of things will be well.

In Christ and with love, DianaPage 9

TreesHouseholders and landowners may not be aware that if their property lies within the Uley Conservation Area, and they wish to carry out any surgical work to trees (from pruning to felling), they need planning permission before they can do so. The Parish Council and the Stroud District Council Tree Officer are aware that numerous unauthorised works have been carried out in the parish over the years and think that this may be because parishioners are not aware of the need for planning permission, and may have responded to contractors who have leafletted them offering tree and other general building works. Before engaging a contractor, the Parish Council recommend that you use a tree surgeon or tree consultant that is registered on the website of The Arboriculture Association.

The responsibility for making a planning application is that of the house-holder/landowner but a good tree surgeon will usually be able to advise you when one might be required. The contractors listed on the site will be able to advise you and carry out appropriate good quality work at the appropri-ate time of the year. Trees in the village are a key part of the landscape and heritage that makes Uley such a special place to live. Please look after them. (Arboriculture Association, The Malthouse, Stroud Green, Standish, Stone-house, Gloucestershire, GL10 3DL. Tel: 01242 522152. Email: [email protected]; website: www.trees.org.uk)

Closure of WhitecourtPlease note that Whitecourt will be closed from 13th – 15th March 2017. This is to allow for works by Severn Trent Water Ltd. If you require any further information please contact Caroline Ingram, Gloucestershire County Council on 08000 514514.

Seasonal Surroundings : MarchFor the last few weeks I have been shuf-fling around the garden, shielding my face from the cold and rain, desperately search-ing for signs of new spring life at my feet. When March finally arrives, it feels like a massive relief and I eagerly lift my head to the beauty of the valley that surrounds us. March marks the start of the official bird-nesting season and after what feels like a long Winter, I will watch their feathered activities with joy as they tinker away amongst the new buds of leaves on the trees above us. Things I am looking forward to this month are: light early mornings, pots of flowers for sale in the village shop, spending time pottering in the garden and hunting for anemones in the woods around the village.

One of my favourite views in Uley is across the Millennium Green where, this spring and summer, I will take the time to really study what is around me rather than just strolling through the grass. Daphne Langford from the Millennium Green Committee has recently updated a list of all the plants and trees that grow on the Green and I will make sure that I take this and my favourite plant identification book every time I walk there, ticking off as many things as I can before next winter. This would be a great activity to share with children/grand-children (but please don’t pick anything to take home!).

You can download a list of the many plant species that grow on the Green by visiting the Millennium Green page on the Uley Parish Council website: http://uleyparishcouncil.gov.uk/uley-millennium-green It stretches onto sev-en pages and is really diverse - there are even three different types of butter-cups (I thought there was only one!). Enjoy! Emily Mathisen

All Change at the HallAs some of you will already know, at the recent AGM of the Village Hall Committee on Feb 2nd, Margaret Groom stood down from the position of Secretary to the Village Hall Committee. At the same time, Derek Parker presented his last Final Accounts of the Year, although both he and his wife Sue had also already stood down from their positions of Treasurer and Booking Clerk respectively, in October.

While finally, Len Freeth who has quietly served as our Auditor for many years has also signed off the last set of Final Accounts for us. I’m sure you would like to join me in thanking them all for the many years of selfless effort they have put in for the benefit of the Hall itself and, as a result, for the benefit of the villagers at large. They have all been great contributors to the life of the village in other spheres too. Margaret, over many years, both with the Parish Council and the Uley Society. She will now have more time to spend with her archive work, some of the results of which have recently put the village on the map worldwide !!

Similarly, Derek and Sue have previously been at the centre of the life of the village, for a long period, and quite some time ago, running the village shop and post office. They can also enjoy a more relaxed retirement. While Len has acted as Chairman of the Uley Society for as long as I am aware. At the same time, in their places, we would like to welcome Chas and Jo Kirk as Treasurer and Booking Clerk respect-ively, and Jackie Chillingworth as our new Secretary, and wish them well in their future efforts on our behalf.

We are still looking for someone to act as our new Auditor. This position does not require filling until October this year which is the end of our financial year. However, if there is anyone out there who would like to take this task on we would be more than happy to hear from them now. This would give us some reassurance that they are available to call on when needed.
