Nowadays, nutrition has been changing; the phenomenon of globalization is a huge factor attracting lots of fast food businesses to our country. People tend to eat junk food, generally because it is cheap, served quickly, and we can eat it very fast. As a result people don’t make a move, so it is important that people recognize the positive and negative aspects of eating these foods.

It is important to first mention the different complications that fast food has on our bodies, the biggest being the large amount of carbohydrates, saturated fat, and calories; all which are bad for our health. Usually the fat is accumulated in the venous tissue, which prevents the passage of blood, increasing the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol. So we need to avoid those foods for those reasons.

Now, when comparing the information I shared in the previous paragraph with the properties of the healthy food, one can see the different affects in the body. Healthy food is full of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that benefit the body, and make us feel very vibrant.

8

Page 9: ULACIT MAGAZINE

Another difference between these foods is the taste, off course junk food generally tastes better due to the artificial flavors which makes us happier, and healthy food in general doesn’t give us that satisfaction. However, when one eats healthy food one does not need to do as much exercise, something that generally needs to be done when eating lots of junk food.

I think is important to care for our bodies, thus we should avoid the excess of fast food. I am not saying that we cannot eat that kind of food, but we have to control our consumption to avoid issues with our body. Also it is important to know one doesn’t have to go to extremes of a diet of just eating vegetables and fruits, but just have a balance between these meals and proper exercise.

In the past few years, we have lived around thousands of social phenomenoms that make us live in constant alert to all the sudden possible changes in our society in which we are all in. The problem we all have when we want to know everything is that we dont notice the big damage we produce in our mental health. One of the mayor consequences we are presented with is anxiety.

People say that anxiety is the most common of all our emotions. It is said to be a tension reaction that has an unknown cause, and it seems to appear out of nowhere. The emotional reaction against a danger or menace, comes out through a group of phisiological, conductual and cognitive responses. Caseras (2009) says that anxiety is part of our essence, it comes in our genetic code and it is inherited from different generations, which makes it impossible for us humans not to suffer it.

Anxiety has numerous synonyms like nervousness, tension, fear, restlesness among others. People who suffer this psycological disorder dont know how to explain what they feel because of all the distress it causes. Even though anxiety is the response to our own organism, if it becomes something of your daily life, it means it has become a pathology. Every human being goes through a process of anxiety, the difference is that we usually have the correct response that makes us face the circumstances we are going through, such as speaking to an audience for example.

10

Page 11: ULACIT MAGAZINE

Zafra y Ortega (2012) says that anxiety is more common in women than in men. Nevertheless anxiety depends in the level of education, your social and economical condition, the age, and the person’s physical condition. According to this author, women who have constant physical activity, have a lower level of anxiety than those who live a sedentary life.

People with anxiety have the problem that can suffer from other psycological disorders easier because this disorder can cause low self-esteem which brings them dissatisfaction in their different social rolls, at work, and educational and will lead them to a cycle where they will be more impulsive by the time they have to manage their anxiety.

It depends on every person the way we manage and feel when we’re anxious, but there are factors that cause anxiety to everybody. We all know we are susceptible to this disorder but our attitude and putting together our thoughts will always influence our behvior and mental health.

The following essay will be about one person who is admired by many people, because her way to dance and sing. She is a person really open because of her difficult life; she was a poor person who was able to overcome her situation through dedication and effort since she had 8 years old, at her 13 years old she had her first album. Her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, now days known as Shakira.

Shakira is an upbeat and a bold person because she said: “That is how I want the youth of 2026 to see us: that our mission for global peace consisted of sending 30000 educators to Afghanistan, not 30000 soldiers”. So, in other words she hopes the world can change for a better way, as now there are many wars, many conflicts, a lot of evil in the world, and not just big battles, I mean in home is very common the disrespect, stupid fights, and all these, is because lack patience, and in home is where you learn to fight with others, and if we do not have changes in home, we will not see changes in world. And we only can change in home with education.

14

Page 15: ULACIT MAGAZINE

Shakira is a positive and an assertive person, who likes helping other people, especially kids, when she had the opportunity she created a foundation known as “Fundación Pies Descalzos”, think about the personal satisfaction can have someone to know that thanks her effort, thousands of children are able to have a place to study, where kids are very poor and did not have the opportunity to do it. In this moment is when you feel indulged and happy for help others. And that feeling do not have price. Now, to finish let it back her personality, we can talk about her physical appearances; she has a curly, long, soft, and a beauty hair, we cannot describe her color because is in constantly change, but you can imagine blond or black. She is short but despite that has a perfect body with toned legs, and a small waist. Top Synergy (2003). Shakira approach to life appearances. There are not many stars that I like, but there is an actress that I admire very much for her talent and attitude. Her name is Angelina Jolie, a North American actress of 36 years of age. She is a person of admiration; known globally for haven adopted children from Africa, as well as having three biological children with her partner, fellow actor, Brad Pitt. In my view, many people in her situation would not do the same to adopt. She is a United Nations Ambassador, as well as a member of several charitable foundations that provide assistance to those in need. Although very popular, she is not negative and presumptuous as many stars, and is known for being assertive and open.

Angelina Jolie is also a film and television actress, born in Los Angeles in 1975. Throughout her career she has received numerous awards for her acting achievements, including an Academy Award and three Golden Globes and is considered one of the sexiest women in the planet, which causes much focus on her from the press. In 2009, Angelina Jolie was ranked first on a list of Forbes magazine’s highest paid actresses in Hollywood, according to data released by this publication.

In 2001 she was appointed ambassador to the United Nations, actively participating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Angelina uses her popularity to attract media attention to the refugees and the terrible conditions in which they live. She has visited many refugee camps and centers in countries like Tanzania, Cambodia, Pakistan, Namibia, Thailand and Ecuador. For her charitable work she has been awarded a humanitarian immigration grant program for refugees and Church World Service. Among other things, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated a million dollars each to two organizations dedicated to helping the disadvantaged, Global Action for Children and Doctors Without Borders.

17

Page 18: ULACIT MAGAZINE

The organization provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe primarily due to armed conflicts, epidemics, malnutrition, or suffering from natural disasters. Haiti is one of the focused areas of medical assistance, following its last earthquake. Asked what she hoped to accomplish meeting with refugees and internally displaced persons in more than 20 countries, she stated, “Awareness of the plight of these people. I think they should be commended for what they have survived, not looked down upon.” (Jolie 2003).

As seen in previous paragraphs Angelina Jolie is a very bold and sociable. She has always shown love to everyone around the world, an example of some quotes published on her Facebook page are: “On World Humanitarian Day we remember the aid workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and we honor the extraordinary courage and dedication of humanitarian workers around the world,” she wrote.

“I had the honor and the pleasure of meeting one of these brave individuals before his murder during a visit to Pakistan, where I witnessed first-hand the incredible devotion of a very kind and gentle man. His name was Mr. Zill-e-Usman.” (Jolie 2012).

Page 19: ULACIT MAGAZINE

In the many years of helping the poor, she has indicated feeling very fortunate to work as a member of UNHCR and among refugees. She has stated: "It is true that they are the most vulnerable in the world, but paradoxically also the most resistant. They are survivors who have been forced to leave their homes and go without any possession thousands of miles to seek a better life." (Jolie 2012) No doubt this woman is an example for all, to show that beauty and be used as a means to help others in need.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America, created a great impact in history due to his persuasive and sincere way of ruling the country. He was born on February 12, 1809, in an ordinary place situated in the state of Kentucky. He was from an underprivileged, aloof family, during a point where the social-class of a person defined what they were and what would they become. Although of his social status, he still managed to break the pattern, reach the highest point in government, and lead the vast, conflictive nation until it thrived through the problems to become what is now the USA. He was the bright, studied man, which had the population’s trust in his hands, regarding the future of the nation. Lincoln’s leadership qualities, such as listening and awareness of who he was, were what made him stand out from the rest.

The ability to listen is a fundamental factor for all kinds of leaders. What makes a person a leader, are the followers that believe on him. Many times in history, the head of a group has been known to be a tyrant. Those leaders only did what they pleased and never listened to the ideas of the people that surrounded them. Lincoln did listen to his followers and his allies; that is why he managed to accomplish many positive outcomes in which the population and himself were satisfied. The ambition existing in the powerful minds of the leaders of the modern society, have created a type of deafening atmosphere in which only the elite classes are heard, and most of the needy ones are left with their mouths wide open unable to speak up their wishes.

20

Page 21: ULACIT MAGAZINE

Abraham Lincoln was an extroverted, open, down to Earth man raised with little resources in his hands. He grew up to be a lawyer, but his expectations were nowhere near to the greatness God had planned for him. Even though in his adult years he had everything everyone wanted, he did not let the material objects corrupt the values that his parents had taught him. Lincoln was aware that he was still the same simple kid raised in Kentucky, just with a lot more resources and land in his name. He was still a person, a human being, with feelings and wishes. He understood others and tried to please everyone equally. In the 21st century, power has started to eliminate values and morality, people prefer to gain money instead of being uncorrupt, and consumerism has turned to be the new religion for most. The down to earth quality has been lost, but there is still hope for it to come back.

The strong character of Abraham Lincoln has marked the historical timeline in the USA. He guided the country through its toughest periods. He did not surrender in the hard times during the American Civil War, neither he backed down when many of his people protested against him when he started to abolish slavery in the nation. In order to be a leader a human does not need to be powerful or rich. People just need to learn the qualities and be glad of who they are. “Whatever you are, be a good one.” –Abraham Lincoln

John Steinbeck, throughout Cannery Row, presents to us a picture perfect description of a quiet and simple town filled with anomalous characters. Many loose vignettes tell the adventures of Doc, Dora, Mack, and the others in a way that leaves a strong impression in the eyes of the reader. In this passage, Doc, finds the cadaver of a girl floating around in the oceans reef. This paragraph not only shows picturesque examples of the themes and motifs present in the novella, but also gives an insight into Steinbeck’s writing style. Steinbeck uses the “intrusion of a dark reality into characters lives” to show the irony present in the novella that covers the whole balance and double-sidedness in between actions.

Many times during the novella, Cannery Row, an obscure reality encroaches the lives of some characters to make them realize that they cannot escape their fate. These characters are all facing difficult times, either because of financial instabilities or loneliness. Due to these depressing feelings they tend to try to escape what is happening. In the passage, the character of Doc is put up to face a very dark and violent reality while on one of his collecting trips. Throughout the novella, the narrator shows how the collecting trips influence a lot of Doc’s life. Since Doc is described as lonely man, he enjoys very much his trips because he knows what he is doing and he is always in complete control of the situation, “The sea rocks and the beaches were his stock pile. He knew where everything was when he wanted it”(100). The feelings of being in control and knowing what he is doing, help him forget about his prevailing loneliness while on Cannery Row.

On this specific collecting trip, Doc faces the obscure reality that makes him realize that no matter how often he goes on a trip, he is a lonely man, “He sat there while the first little spout of water came over the reef bringing the returning tide”(110). This quote shows the way in which Steinbeck uses imagery to describe what is actually happening in the novella. He describes the setting of how the ocean brings the returning tide. This description explains how, by Doc seeing the dead girl floating around, he is forced to come back to reality and face the truth; just as the oceans tide returns to the reef.

24

Page 25: ULACIT MAGAZINE

Ironical comments and farcical descriptions unravel the knot of stories that the novella is composed of. Cannery Row has a ludicrous essence since it touches violent topics, such as suicides, with a very light connotation. Also Steinbeck’s style of writing contributes to this essence, since he uses many oxymoronic descriptions and Picaresque characteristics. The portrayal of events in the passage has this kind of ironic tone, due to the word choice; which disturbs the reader enormously, “The eyes were gray and the mouth smiled a little or seemed to catch its breath in ecstasy”(110). The diction presented in the quote, makes the irony. First the narrator decided to use the word “gray” to describe the eyes.

This word is a very obscure and lifeless one, but fits perfectly, since the reader already knows the girl is dead. Then, Steinbeck decided to use the words “smile” and “ecstasy” to continue the description. These two words are full of life, since one is a way of expressing happiness and the other is extreme happiness itself. The two contrasting terms, of obscurity and happiness, coexist all the way from the beginning of Cannery Row until the very end of it. Another part in which irony is presented in the passage is, “He shivered and his eyes were wet the way they get in the focus of great beauty”(110). Just as the past example, the diction is contrasting. The first part of the excerpt creates in the reader a cold and deathlike mood because of the words “shivered” and “eyes were wet”. After creating that mood, Steinbeck decided to turn it up side down, by using the words “great beauty”. These two words contradict the whole context of the passage, since they are comparing a cadaver with beauty.

Linked to the ironic twist of the novel, the theme of balance and double-sidedness is presented. This is a theme seen throughout the whole novella, and it is emphasized by many of the characteristics and descriptions of both Steinbeck and the town. Taints of both realism and romanticism are found side by side in order to highlight the themes. Other numerous examples that contribute to it as well are presented in the passage, for example, “The girl’s eyes had been gray and clear…”(110). This shows the comparison of two different words, just as in the example of the paragraph of irony. The eyes of the dead girl are described with the words “gray” and “clear”. Gray is very obscure and associated with daunting actions. In the other hand the word clear is a very pure and benevolent one. The oxymoron presented creates the balance that is kept throughout the whole book, the one that holds every detail into place and creates what Cannery Row actually is, a contrastingly similar fishing town.

The movie is really worth watching, especially since it is based on a real life story! After watching this film it makes you want to keep fighting to fulfill your dreams, as well reflect on the fact that others suffer more than us without complaining to achieve goals in life. The movie does a great job of making you feel everything that happens to them: despair, joy, sadness. It makes you realize that nobody gives you anything in this world, and that you have to win it. If one wants something in life you have to fight until the end not allowing anyone or anything get in our dreams.

In this essay I’m going to speak a little about the non-profit organization (Alzheimer´s association), the objectives that have, also have some rules that they have established with this people and the mission and a little history. A nonprofit organization is a group organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization's income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers. Include churches, public schools, public charities, public clinics and hospitals, political organizations, legal aid societies, volunteer services organizations, labor unions, professional associations, research institutes, museums, and some governmental agencies. Alzheimer is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.

About a little of the history of this organization is that in 1979, Jerome H. Stone and representatives from several family support groups met with the National Institute on Aging to explore the value of a national, independent, nonprofit organization to complement federal efforts surrounding Alzheimer's disease. So in that meeting, resulted in the April 10, 1980 the formation of the Alzheimer's Association with Mr. Stone as founding president. The vision of this organization is having a world without Alzheimer. And the mission, is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; also to provide and enhance care and support for all detected and finally to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. This association are much ratified, they spare about these people that have Alzheimer. The Alzheimer´s Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care and support, largest private nonprofit funder.

Has local chapters across the nation providing services within each community; They provide caregivers and families with comprehensive online resources and information. They deliver 20,000 education programs annually and offer online information in 17 languages They develop policy resources, including Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures and Changing the Trajectory of Alzheimer’s Disease, to educate decision makers on the economic and emotional toll that Alzheimer's takes on families and the nation.

30

Page 31: ULACIT MAGAZINE

They advance the understanding of Alzheimer’s through our peer-reviewed research grant program, which has awarded more than $300 million to 2,100 scientists since 1982. Their professional society, Alzheimer's Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment (ISTAART), is the only professional society designed exclusively for individuals dedicated to Alzheimer's and dementia science; and I think this is very good for people that need these help. About the symbol, represents who they are and what we do. It is both a visual symbol of our dual mission of people and science and a commitment that guides us in our daily work in research, advocacy, education and support. I think this association is very important because very people that have this problem, they needed and there´s no many organization like this in the country. People despise these people, and they forget that one day they may suffer from this problem and none is perfect in the world. To be in an association like this it learn about how to take care of the person, to be more patient and to restrain above to people who want to do the badness. We have to love them and take care of them. References Alzheimer´s Organization http://www.alz.org/index.asp Legal Information Institute http://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/non-profit_organizations

The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization. The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in 1881—127 years ago. Clara Barton established the American Red Cross in Washington DC on May 21, 1881. She was the chief of this organization for twenty three years. The idea came to her after visiting Europe and witnessing how the interactions were with the Swiss-International Red Cross. Ms. Clara Barton wasn’t a nurse, but she was there to help wounded soldiers on the front line. The worse the battle became, more and more soldiers became wounded. With the devastating of the war it resulted in a shortage of emergency and medical supplies which convinced Barton to think about an organization for emergency relief. Barton’s mission was to gather volunteers to help out with the organization locally and internationally to deliver help to disaster victims.

In 1900 the first charter of the American Red Cross was granted by the U.S Congress, which made it responsible for providing services to Armed Forces and relief to disaster victims, within the United States and internationally. This allowed them the foundation to continue their efforts in disaster relief and mitigation and providing services and communication between the military and the families back home.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

32

Page 33: ULACIT MAGAZINE

The American Red Cross provides aid during many natural disasters. One of the most famous disasters was Hurricane Hugo. It was the biggest disaster in the American Red Cross’s History. It swept through the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and South Carolina in 1989. The American Red Cross provided emergency supplies and temporary repairing of buildings. Over 116,000 individuals and families were affected. The American Red Cross also operated over 470 shelters. The hurricane destroyed 16,500 dwellings and damaged 140,000 others. It killed at least 65 people and disrupted the area’s water and electricity. In the Caribbean over 300 paid staff and disaster specialists were assigned to help and 230 paid employees were assigned in the US. This hurricane cost 64 million dollars worth of damage. The American Red Cross helped rebuild homes, clean up damage, provide shelter for those who lost homes etc. “This disaster completely depleted the American Red Cross’s budget. The US showed major support and donated tons of money” (American Red Cross). The Oklahoma Bombing happened on April 19, 1995. The Alfred P Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The American Red Cross also helped with the many problems resulting from that. (American Red Cross) 167 people were killed in this disaster. 19 of them were children and 2 died in the rescue. (Michel Herbeck 188) The Red Cross has helped many people and the Red Cross will hopefully continue contributing to the US and other parts of the world for many years to come. They have been working very hard since the 9/11 tragedy. They deserve a lot of credit for all of the work. References: American Red Cross. (2008, 11). Non-profit organization. World Health Organization, (WHO) is the directing authority responsible for health within the United Nations system, this because in 1945 the diplomats discussed about create a global health organization, (because everything was devastating), and in 1948 the diplomats ratified the organization, which it is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and checking and measuring health trends.

All countries that are subscribe to the United Nations are the countries can be members of the WHO, but other countries may be admitted if they send a request, which must be approved by vote of the Assembly Health. The members are divided into different groups according to geographical distribution; 194 groups currently exist.

This organization has 6 main regional offices, and these are located in: Africa (Republic of Congo), Europe (Denmark), Central Asia (India), Eastern Mediterranean (Cairo), Western Pacific (Filipino) and the Americas (Washington). And all the offices are prevailed until time.

Some organization activities they usually perform are: organize and classify internationally diseases, to keep up the list of essential drugs to treat the population. Other action they should do is developing health plans; for example, establishing what are the vaccines that people should be put before traveling to another country. Knowing and report averages to be taken in case of a pandemic event. And another very important thing is to restrain the poorest countries through the donation of vaccines, medicines and water.

In my personal opinion this is a really good and important organization, because they worry about what´s happening in the world, to help the people, of course, in the health habit. Any person could say, that many people don´t die because exist organizations like this one.
