Doing Good Around the Corner…With Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin

With the winter weather now a distant memory, many Wisconsinitesfind themselves exploring the great outdoors, especially in their own localcommunities. Whether looking for ideas or places to visit, or celebratingwell-known hot spots, MPTV’s local production “Around the Corner withJohn McGivern,” will give you something to smile about. This month,watch as John explores the communities of Bay View, Wauwatosa,Riverwest, and Cedarburg.

“If you really stop and think about it, the Constitution is allaround us all the time” says Sagal. “And though many of us don’treally understand the document, that has never stopped us fromarguing about what it means.”

“Tackling a topic as important as the Constitution, and doing itin a way that is not only educational, but entertaining as well, isthe essence of what PBS stands for,” says Beth Hoppe, ChiefProgramming Executive and General Manager, General AudienceProgramming, PBS. “And timing the series to coincide with theanniversary of an important milestone in U.S. history is anotherway we demonstrate value as America’s largest classroom. CONSTITUTION USA with Peter Sagal takes viewers on afast-paced, surprising journey across the nation to examine the4,418 words — and 27 amendments — that made America. Theseries coincides with the 225th anniversary of the ratification ofthe Constitution.

For the month-long series, premiering Tuesday, May 7, 8p.m. onChannel 10, Sagal, host of NPR’s popular Wait Wait… Don’t TellMe!, travels cross-country — from Tyler, Texas, to Missoula,Montana; from Cranston, Rhode Island, to Berkeley, California— on a customized red, white and blue Harley-Davidson to findout what the Constitution means in the 21st century, how itunites us as a nation and how it has nearly torn us apart. Sagaltalks with ordinary Americans who are struggling with issues ofaffirmative action, same-sex marriage, voting rights, the role ofgovernment and equal protection.

“There is one thing that sets us apart from most other nations inthe world and that is our Constitution,” says Justice Sandra DayO’Connor, whom Sagal interviews for CONSTITUTION USA.“It serves every American every day. No citizen can be denied dueprocess of law or equal protection under our laws. We are trulyblessed.”

At a time when polls indicate that only 38 percent of Americanscan name all three branches of U.S. government (2011 survey byThe Annenberg Public Policy Center), CONSTITUTION USAsets out to illuminate, with style and humor, this remarkablymisunderstood document. CONSTITUTION USA uses aninnovative visual approach, combining top-line animation andgraphics with archival footage from television and movies to bringto life both the history and the actual text of the Constitution.

In this Milwaukee Public Television/Next Avenue Community Conversation, experts will share wisdom and advice on the topic of achieving financial security after the age of 50.Event speakers include Bill Cashin, Financial Consultant, and Matt Ruppe, Director of Investments, both of UW Credit Union.

This year marks Joe Sankey’s 26th year as the setdesigner of MPTV. Since 1987, Joe has been creatingthe sets for MPTV’s local productions includingINTERCHANGE, BLACK NOUVEAU, the GREAT TV AUCTION and the nationally-broadcastCIRCUS PARADE.

Joe earned his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at Carnegie MellonUniversity and his Master’s Degree at Boston University.He moved to Milwaukee in 1982 to join the MilwaukeeRepertory Theater as an assistant set designer and afterthree seasons with The Rep, he did freelance work withtheaters such at the Milwaukee Chamber Theater andthe Melody Top Theatre.

Joe is a department of one, and as such, he has two ruleshe follows. “Don't design what you can't build and don'tbuild what you can't lift," said Joe. He designs the sets,and serves as carpenter, painter and property master. Healso works on many non-broadcast projects, such assetting up the Great TV Auction Art Preview at theHome & Garden Show. One of his favorite projects wasTHE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE, because not only didhe work on set design, he also designed the costumesfeatured in the program.

“Every day is different and that’s why I love it.” Said Joe,“And since I’m the only person in the design department,I have drawn on everything I learned in college, and alsopicked up some new skills along the way.”

Joe is an admitted hoarder, since the design budget inpublic television is small. He has become masterful atsalvaging and re-using, and breaks down old sets to savethe wood he can use in another set.

“This job is what I make of it,” Joe said. “No one canmake this job interesting but me, and part of what makesit interesting is getting every dollar to count as three.”

In his free time, Joe likes to travel and immerse himselfin other cultures. He also enjoys attending the theaterand opera, and tending to his perennial garden.

In 1960's Britain, an upstanding detectivetakes on a dangerous world. When a disaster strikesand people are buried, these search dogs willbe the first on the scene to save you.
