Preparing the mix

UKM Why are islands so good?SC They’re a natural fi sh holding area – fi sh live there pretty much as soon as things warm up and carp love to patrol these shallow margins.

The water is shallow, typically under 3ft, and you’ve only got to stand out in the sun at this time of year to feel how warm it is. You can then see how quickly this water warms up, attracting the fi sh as a result.

UKM What’s the best way to fi sh them?SC You can’t beat the pole provided the island is within reach. I wouldn’t fi sh much further than 16m for purposes of presentation and hitting bites, but the feeder can also work well if the island is a long cast away.

The waggler is a bit of a no-no in terms of accuracy

because I fi nd you can’t land the feed in a tight enough spot.

UKM Is it a pellet job?SC For small stockies and F1 hybrids I’d say yes, but islands always hold big resident carp and whenever they are on the menu I use my special liquidised meat mix that always works for decent carp. It’s not a small-fi sh approach by any means.

UKM Why is meat so good?SC Meat has always been a good carp bait and I think it is one of the baits that actually works for me when I’m struggling. By mashing luncheon meat into a slop or using the liguidised meat it triggers the swim into action.

It does produce lots of line bites but this activity does mean you’ve got fi sh in the peg and you can then work out how to catch them. I’ve seen how this slop works in the water, and the fat and oil that comes off makes the fi sh mad – it’s an old cliché but they do almost crawl up the pole!

Bream don’t like feed splashing in over their heads. Derek Willan has a trick that gets round this while still keeping them interested. The secret’s all in the ball...

1The two groundbaits I use are Bait-Tech Omen and Mantra. They’re new to

the market and both aimed at silverfish such as bream, skimmers and roach. Mantra is quite sticky and will carry lots of feed but not break up particularly quickly. Omen is far lighter and comes apart quickly once in the water.

2After knocking up each mix with the help of a

drill, you can feel their relative consistencies by using the finger

test. A small ball of Mantra stays intact even when pushing your finger into

it, while a ball of Omen crumbles

easily when prodded.

3I’ll make up a ball of Mantra holding my

goodies such as chopped worm, caster or micro pellets. This ball is around the size of a small orange and is well moulded to stay intact.

4I then mould the finer Omen mix around this ball,

effectively doubling it in size and giving it a crumbly coating. This will break up as soon as the ball is cupped into the swim to reveal the harder ball of feed which will head straight to the deck – above this the Omen trails down in a plume of particles – the best of both worlds I suppose!

“I’ve fished enough bream venues such as Carr Mill Dam in my time to know that attracting bream is the easy part of any session.

Feeding once the fish are in the peg is the make or break time, and I’ve learned through painful trial and error that balls of groundbait on top of them will ruin a swim.

That got me thinking, though. Could I have a ball of groundbait that didn’t drop like a stone on top of the fish, something that produced a bit of

a bream-reassuring cloud as it fell through the peg but had a stiffer central core to carry feed items to the bottom?

What I came up with involves wrapping one mix of groundbait around another, both having a very specific job.

I tried it and was pleasantly surprised at the results. Far from spooking the fish, it tended to make the peg stronger and sometimes even encouraged bream to come off the bottom. Here’s how it all works.”
