This is the fi rst Match Gear Guide ever produced by Shimano and

features the very latest tackle suitable for the UK match angler.

Take a look through the pages and you’ll soon see exactly what we mean.

With a wide range of rods, poles, reels

and accessories available, there is now something for all match anglers or

those who fi sh like them.

And don’t think that it’s only exclusive top-of-the-range tackle either.

Shimano understand the needs of all anglers, which is why a lot of our

tackle represents outstanding value for money and affordability.

Although Shimano is one of the largest tackle companies in the

World, we realise the need to develop tackle specifi cally for certain

markets. This is why a lot of the tackle in this brochure has been

designed in the UK by some of the best match anglers available.

DESIGNED IN THE UK FOR UK ANGLERS

There are several examples of this. The Commercial rod range has been especially designed for UK match anglers fi shing modern methods on commercial waters. The new GEN X and GEN Z poles are designed to cope with strong elastics without the need to use heavy power kits. This is a direct result of the change in modern match fi shing where fi sh are getting bigger and poles need to be stronger. The Super Ultegra and Commercial luggage ranges are also designed for UK match anglers, especially those who use barrows and carry made-up rods. Finally all Shimano 3000 sized reels come with shallow spools suitable for match anglers using between 4lb and 8lb reel lines.

AR-C SPOOLThe new generation AR-C Spool has a chamfered lip. This results in longer and more accurate casts with less effort, making distance feeder fi shing or casting tight to islands easier.

AERO WRAP IIFor a line lay second-to-none, you don’t need to look any further than Shimano Aero Wrap II line lay system. Using advanced engineering and super smooth oscillation systems we can create line lay with extremely close parallel coils resulting in smoother and improved casting distance.

VARISPEEDVarispeed produces exceptional line lay for long casting performance. Using two special gears (one of which is square!), Varispeed lays the line on the spool in a way that prevents it bedding in when playing hard fi ghting fi sh.

S A-RB BALL BEARINGSThe secret of long-term high performance is to prevent any form of rust, corrosion or oxidisation of the bearings. This can cause a reduction in the reels performance over time. S A-RB Bearings have extra shielding for improved protection against grit, sand or dust.

FRONT DRAGIn the last couple of years front drag systems have become more popular with match anglers. The reason is simple - carp! Shimano front drags have multiple discs which produce a low inertia start and consistently smooth performance. Providing you set your drag correctly, a Shimano front drag can be trusted to compensate for powerful runs and close to the net lunges.

REAR DRAG / FIGHTIN’ DRAGRear drag reels are still hugely popular and thanks to Shimano’s exclusive roller bearing, which reduces friction and holds the main drive shaft securely, making them almost as effi cient as front drags. One big advantage of rear drags is you can change the spool without changing the drag setting. Another is Fightin’ Drag which is fi tted to our mid and upper priced reels. This enables you to slacken or tighten the drag easily whilst playing a fi sh.

P4 REELSShimano P4 stands for Power, Precision, Performance and Pleasure and combines uncompromising quality with mid-priced affordability. You won’t fi nd better performance or quality in this price bracket anywhere. Available in both front and rear drag options, if you thought a Shimano reel was out of your budget, check out the P4 range.

ROLLER BEARINGShimano is the only company to produce its own roller bearings. This piece of fi ne engineering holds the main shaft and provides an excellent infi nite anti-reverse performance, essential when playing powerful fi sh of the drag. A Shimano roller bearing delivers a performance equivalent to 3-4 ball bearings.

POWER ROLLERThe special design of the Shimano Power Roller signifi cantly reduces friction and line twist during the retrieve and when playing fi sh off the drag. The result is smoother casts with more consistency and less wear on the line.

RARENIUM Ci4 FAIf ever a reel was designed for the UK match angler Rarenium is it. Built using Shimano’s exclusive ultra light Ci4 material, as soon as you pick one up you’ll immediately feel the difference - the 3000 model weighs just 200g (that’s about 30% lighter than most of it’s competitors!). The benefi t of this becomes apparent when you combine the Rarenium with modern match rods, especially models designed for match carp waters. Pellet waggler and short feeder rods immediately feel better balanced and more responsive.

a lack of weight. With 6 ball bearings, plus a roller bearing, the Rarenium has all of the smoothness and power you’d expect from a Shimano. Ci4 is exclusive to Shimano and is a material created by the fusion of carbon and polyamide. This revolutionary material offers a similar strength and rigidity of metal, but with huge weight savings. TWINPOWER FCBuilt with a lightweight body made from aluminium and XT7, the Twin Power has lower gear ratios than many other match reels (2500 and 3000 - 5.1:1. 4000 and 5000 - 4.8:1). These ratios produce more torque and fi sh playing power making this range perfect for big weight fi shing. STRADIC FCStradic has been around for years and has stood the test of time. The latest FD model continues the Stradic reputation with a traditionally fast retrieve ratio (2500 and 3000 - 6.0:1. 4000 and 5000 - 5.8:1), a feature that many match anglers prefer. Another well liked feature is the double handle (2500, 3000, 4000 models), which balances the reel perfectly and produces smooth performance when working at top speed. In fact for fl oat fi shing the Stradic 2500 and shallow spooled 3000 really take some beating.

As with all Shimano front drags, the advanced low inertia multi-disc drag makes fi sh-playing much more effi cient, especially when using lighter hooklengths between 0.10mm and 0.13mm for carp. This range also features a compact bodied 5000 size which comes with a longer single handle making it excellent for feeder fi shing at range.

SHALLOW SPOOLSThe 3000 sized Shimano reels are supplied with shallow spools. Shallow spools have enough line capacity for the most common match lines right up to 10lb for commercial carp waters without the need to use excessive backing.

NOTE: Pay special attention to the “CFD” version: this is a compact body sized reel with a large capacity spool.

CARBON TYPESShimano has access to many types of different carbon grades, resins and technical manufacturing processes which combine to produce outstanding rods at all prices. You will see next to the specifi cation boxes an ‘XT’ fi gure which denotes the quality of the carbon. The larger the fi gure, the higher quality and more costly the carbon (XT100 is better than XT40). To make exceptional rods we blend different grades of carbon together to produce the right combination of lightness, stiffness and strength. We also have different resins and manufacturing processes which can improve rods. Biofi bre provides additional strength in top and mid prices models whilst Geofi bre is used for our entry level models to produce similar results. Our latest technological advancement is HPC (High Pressure Carbon). This eliminates weak spots and increases strength by evenly distributing the resin during processing and is now being used on top of the range products.

GUIDESThe type of guides used on a rod have a direct result on its action. At Shimano we select the best guides for the rods use, considering lightness, profi le, strength and positioning.

GEN ZGEN Z is a more cost effective version of GEN X and follows the same principles. GEN Z can be found on our new Carp Cruncher, Exage and Technium poles. GEN Z kits are available in top 3, 4, and 5 section options in two grades - All Round and EV. There is also a matching cupping kit that is exactly the same length as a top 3 kit.

AERO JOINTThrough the application of a unique high grade carbon - lighter yet more resistant to wear and tear than woven material – Aero Joint will boost your unshipping speed and decrease the chances of damage or sticking joints.

ULTRA SOUND SANDING SYSTEMAvailable on all GenZ poles. This unique process results in a fi nish that is silky smooth for almost frictionless shipping and unshipping in both hot and wet conditions.

SHIMANO ALIGNMENT SYSTEMShimano Alignment System is a system to get the best out of a pole’s action. During production, the backbone of each section is found and marked. When assembled correctly you get a setup which gives the stiffest and best possible alignment.

GEN XThe GEN X Concept was the result of over three years intense research into the perfect design taper for a pole so that it can be fi shed at its full 16m length more easily. The result is a series which offers the perfect combination between stiffness, balance, weight and low diameter. The Aspire Ultra, Fire Blood and Super Ultegra are all produced on the GEN X mandrel, meaning that sections will interchange and a large range of affordable generic spares are available to fi t each pole. The design of the match top 3’s incorporates a very short, large bore number 1 section. This can be elasticated with up to a number 8 elastic without any cutting back. For heavier elastics up to 20, and all hollow elastics, you can remove the number 1 section and fi t a large internal bush directly into the number 2 section. Because the number 1 section is short, it means that you keep the maximum length possible whether you’re fi shing light or extra heavy elastic. Also within GEN X is a full range of top kits in 3, 4 and 5 section options. These come in four different grades - Pro, Plus, All Round and EV to enable you to tailor you pole to suit your preference. A cupping kit (exactly the same length as a top 3 kit), half extensions and a generic parallel extension are also available.

The interchangeable top kits have a short number 1 section which requires no cutting back for elastics up to a size 8. EXAGE SLIMWhen fi shing at lengths up to 11.5 metres, the benefi ts of a lower diameter pole are obvious, and that’s what you get with the Exage Slim. Faster to ship and offering less resistance to wind, it also benefi ts from XT100/XT60 plus Biofi bre construction which gives it excellent balance and strength. With an elastic rating of up to 20, the Exage Slim is a great pole for commercials where a lot of fi sh are caught at close and medium range. A parallel extension section to take the pole beyond 11.5m is also available as an optional extra.
