SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:Cleveland State Vikings2009-10 Record: 10-12, 6-4 Horizon LeagueHead Coach: Gary Waters (Fourth season)

ABOUT THE VIKINGS:Cleveland State has won three in a row and six of its last eight games heading into Thursday’s game against the Flames. On Saturday the Vikings lead from start to fi nish in a 77-69 win over Youngstown State in Cleve-land. Norris Cole is averaging a team-high 16.6 ppg.

LAST TIME WE MET:January 9, 2010: Cleveland State, UIC (Wolstein Center - Cleveland, OH)UIC cut a 16-point defi cit with four minutes remaining in regulation down to three with under a minute left to play, but the Flames’ rally came up short in a 70-63 loss to Cleveland State at the Wolstein Center. Jeremy Buttell led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds.Chicago native Jeremy Montgomery led the Vikings with 17 points. UIC went on a 17-2 fi rst-half run to turn a seven-point defi cit into a 30-22 lead. Cleveland State outscored UIC 11-3 to end the period and create a 33-33 halftime deadlock. From there the Vikings would hold a single-digit advantage for most of the second half until they broke open a six-point game with a 10-0 run that put them up 65-49 at the 4:01 mark. UIC went nearly four minutes without a point during the Vikings’ burst until a bucket by Zavion Neely with 3:46 remaining ended the drought. Spencer Stewart hit a three moments later, and Buttell persevered by crashing the offensive glass on two straight misses and eventually making a layup while getting fouled by Jared Cunningham for an old-fashioned three-point play that brought UIC to within eight with 1:46 on the clock. An over-and-back violation by Cole gave the ball back to the Flames, who quickly converted the turnover into points when Chris Buchanan splashed in a three that made it a fi ve-point game. Cole was fouled and made one of two free throws, and after the two teams traded possession without scoring, the Flames retrieved the ball following a steal by Buttell that led to a three-point play on Buchanan’s bucket and subsequent free throw after he was fouled by Aaron Pogue on the fi eld goal. That made it a 66-63 game with :51.4 seconds on the clock. D’aundray Brown hit two free throws to extend Cleveland State’s lead to fi ve. Stewart missed a shot on the ensuing possession, and two Viking free throws later sealed the decision.

LAST TIME OUT:January 30: Detroit 76, UIC 73 (Calihan Hall - Detroit, MI)Despite a rough second-half start that created a 14-point defi cit, UIC rallied back for a chance to tie in the fi nal seconds but came up short in a 76-73 loss to Detroit at Calihan Hall on Saturday. Jeremy Buttell scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Flames. Zavion Neely added 16 points, while Robo Kreps and Brad Birton each chipped in 11 points apiece. Chase Simon had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds for the host Titans, who shot 66.7 percent (14-for-21) in the second half to fi nish the game shooting 56 percent (28-for-50). UIC scored the fi rst seven points of the game and led for nearly the entire fi rst half, thanks to hot shooting and error-free play. The Flames, who were coming off of their lowest single-game shooting percentage in school history when they shot 20 percent at Wright State on Thursday, hit 16 of their 30 fi rst-half attempts (53.3 percent) and didn’t commit a turnover in the fi rst 13 minutes. But a UIC scoreless drought of nearly fi ve minutes and eight Flames turnovers in the half’s fi nal seven minutes kept the Titans to within two heading into halftime and set the tone for a rough start to the next stanza for the road team. UIC went 0-for-12 to start the second half, while Detroit opened the period outscoring the Flames 16-0 and hitting 7-of-10 from the fi eld in a span of under seven minutes to go ahead 52-38. A pair of thunderous Eli Holman dunks capped the Titans’ run. That didn’t deter the visitors. From there the Flames hit their next four shots to start a 21-8 run, spurred by nine points from Buttell, to get within one on two occasions. A 7-0 run by Detroit extended its lead to eight, but UIC continued to stay within striking distance by creating turnovers and chipping away offensively. Eventually UIC cut the Titans’ lead to 71-69 with 1:52 remaining following a pair of free throws made by Neely. A layup by Eulis Stephens off of a missed free throw by Xavier Keeling on the other end extended the Flames’ defi cit back to four, and after the two teams traded missed three-pointers, it was a coast-to-coast off-balance bucket by Neely that brought UIC back to within two. Simon hit two free throws to get the hosts back ahead by four, but Neely once again made a layup to make the score 75-73 with :12.5 on the clock. Keeling was fouled by Kreps with :07.3 left to go to the line, making the fi rst but missing the second. Buttell corralled the rebound and fi red the ball ahead to Kreps, who dribbled down the right side and prepared to launch a game-tying three attempt, but the 6-foot-10 Holman was waiting for him by the arc and blocked Kreps’ shot to end the game.

USE UIC:Please use UIC in all references. “Illinois-Chicago” and all other references are incorrect and unacceptable. UIC is the correct and only name that should be used at all times. Thank you for your cooperation.

BUTTELL BALLIN’:Senior forward Jeremy Buttell has picked up his offensive game of late. In the last seven games Buttell is averaging a team-high 17.0 ppg and 7.6 rpg, shooting 49.5 percent (46-for-93) from the fi eld and 39.0 percent (16-for-41) from downtown. He had his third 20-point game of the year last Saturday with 23 against Detroit.

REVERTING TO REGULAR ROBO: After averaging just 6.5 ppg in the two games prior to the Flames’ road trip to Wright State and Detroit, junior guard Robo Kreps averaged13.5 ppg during the road trip. Kreps scored a game-high 16 points against the Raid-ers on Jan. 28.

LET’S START A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IN FEBRUARY...:...since January was a rough experience for the Flames. UIC lost all eight of its games in January, allowing foes to average 71.0 ppg and shoot 47.5 percent (194-for-408) while outrebound the Flames by an average of over 10 rpg (38.8 rpg for opponents vs. 28.4 rpg for UIC) during the month. The Flames allowed opponents in November and December to shot just 41.2 percent (300-for-729) and average 66.3 ppg, with a rebound differential of only 5.7 rpg in favor of opponents. The Flames’ bright spot during January was Jeremy Buttell, who averaged 15.6 ppg and 7.1 rpg in January games.

LEAGUE PLAY NOT SO NICE:Horizon League play has not been the best experience for the Flames. Through 11 games UIC is 1-10, averaging 57.0 ppg and shooting 36.0 percent (223-for-620) from the fi eld. Compare that to non-conference play in which UIC was averaging 61.1 ppg and shooting 39.2 percent (219-for-559).

FLAMES TRYING TO STAY DEFENSIVE:UIC is one of the Horizon League’s top teams in making good shots tough to come by for opponents. The Flames are fourth in the league in fi eld goal percentage defense (43.4%) and rank fi fth in three-point fi eld goal percent-age defense (34.6%) despite allowing the last two foes to shoot 53.5 (54-for-101) from the fi eld.

ZAVION ZIG-ZAGGING HIS WAY TO THE BASKET:Sophomore guard Zavion Neely played sparingly as a true freshman last season, but the Chicago native is mak-ing the most of his new role as a starter in the Flames’ backcourt. Neely is second on the team in scoring with 11.6 ppg, with a career-high 24-point effort against SIU on Nov. 28. He has scored in double fi gures in 14 of UIC’s 21 contests thus far after scoring just 14 points all year as a true freshman in 2008-09 and is averaging nearly 10 points more than his 1.8 ppg as a rookie.

STEWIE HELPING OUT:Senior point guard Spencer Stewart has helped the Flames’ offense tremendously. UIC mustered a total of 41 assists (8.2 apg) in the fi rst fi ve games of the season without Stewart, but since his return the Flames have already had 174 assists in 16 games (10.9 apg). Stewart, the Horizon League’s active career assists leader (379 total assists), is averaging 5.1 apg and has accounted for 46.6 percent of UIC’s assists since his return. He dished out a career high-tying nine helpers at Detroit this past Saturday.

HOME AND AWAY NIGHT AND DAY:The Flames appear to be a very different team at home than on the road this year. UIC is 5-5, averaging 60.5 ppg while allowing just 61.3 ppg at the Pavilion; on the road the Flames are 0-11 and average 57.5 ppg while giving up 74.3 ppg. UIC is coming off of a season-high 73-point outing in a road game at Detroit on Saturday.

KREPS THE KEY TO VICTORY:When breaking down UIC’s statistics in victories versus defeats, it is easy to see the impact Robo Kreps has onthe Flames’ success. In fi ve wins Kreps is averaging 22.2 ppg and shooting 43.8 percent (32-for-73); in 16 losses Kreps is putting up 11.6 ppg and shooting just 29.6 percent (60-for-203).
