Match backgroundGalatasaray AŞ host Real Madrid CF in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final needing aremarkable revival to stay in the competition.

• Having lost the first leg 3-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín all on target, Fatih Terim'shosts have it all to do to reach their first European Cup semi-final in 24 years. For nine-time winners Madrid, meanwhile,a 24th semi-final appearance is within reach.

Past meetings• The clubs' three previous encounters before this season all took place in 2000/01, starting with Galatasaray's 2-1triumph in the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco. Although Raúl González's 79th-minute penalty cancelled out an earlierMário Jardel (41) spot kick, Jardel's second goal on 103 minutes secured Galatasaray a second European honourthree months after their UEFA Cup triumph – a first for a Turkish team.

• A Galatasaray side coached by Mircea Lucescu made life awkward for Madrid in the UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-finals later that season, coming from two goals down to win the first leg 3-2 in Istanbul. Iván Helguera (33)and Claude Makelele (43) put Madrid ahead but Galatasaray responded through Ümit Davala's penalty (47), HasanŞaş (66) and Jardel (75).

• The lineups for that encounter at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on 3 April 2001 were:Galatasaray: Taffarel, Capone (Fatih Akyel 46), Popescu, Bülent Korkmaz, Ergün Penbe, Okan Buruk, Ümit Davala,Suat Kaya (Akin Bülent 46), Hagi, Hasan Şaş, Jardel.Madrid: Casillas, Salgado, Hierro, Karanka, Roberto Carlos, McManaman (Solari 89), Helguera, Makelele (Celades62), Figo, Raúl, Morientes (Guti 69).

• Vicente del Bosque's Madrid shrugged off that loss with a 3-0 win back in the Spanish capital as Raúl (15, 37) andHelguera (28) took the defending champions through to a semi-final they would lose against FC Bayern München.

• Iker Casillas and Aitor Karanka, now Madrid's assistant coach, are the only survivors of those games 12 years ago.

Match background• Madrid won 2-1 at Manchester United FC in the round of 16 and have scored in all 16 UEFA Champions Leagueaway fixtures during José Mourinho's reign, losing just two of them.

• Galatasaray have won just once at home in this season's UEFA Champions League but have suffered only tworeverses in their last 13 European fixtures in Istanbul.

• Galatasaray are competing at this stage for the first time since their 2001 quarter-final against Madrid and are lookingto reach only their second European Cup semi-final; their first came under Mustafa Denizli in 1988/89, when they fellto FC Steaua Bucureşti. Their record in quarter-final ties is W1 L3.

• Galatasaray have not won at home to Spanish opposition in five attempts since that April 2001 first-leg victory againstMadrid. Their most recent home fixture with Liga visitors came in the 2009/10 UEFA Cup round of 32, when a last-minuteDiego Forlán goal for Club Atlético de Madrid condemned them to a 2-1 reverse and a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

• Overall, Galatasaray's home record against teams from Spain is W5 D2 L5.

• Madrid are aiming for a 24th semi-final appearance and no other club has competed in as many quarter-finals – thisis their 30th and they have won all but six.

• Mourinho has a 100% record in UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, having won at this stage with FC Porto(2004), Chelsea FC (2005, 2007), FC Internazionale Milano (2010) and his present club in 2011 and 2012.

• Besides their aforementioned encounters with Galatasaray, Madrid's only other experience of Turkish oppositioncame in the 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, when they overcame Beşiktaş JK 2-0 at home beforea 1-1 draw in Istanbul.

• Galatasaray have lost away in the first leg in European competition on 19 occasions and only five times did theyrecover to win the tie. They have been beaten 3-0 away twice; a 2-0 home win against PSV Eindhoven in the 1987/88European Champion Clubs' Cup first round was not enough, but in the second round of the same competition thefollowing season, they pulled off a comeback against Neuchâtel Xamax FC with a 5-0 home success.

• Madrid have gone through in 41 of 54 ties after winning the first leg at home, including all seven when they initiallytriumphed 3-0. The largest first-leg advantage they have let slip is two goals, which has happened seven times.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 30 occasions, including FC Barcelona and MálagaCF in this season's round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals andFC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed aftera home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finalswhen they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-two ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-leggedtie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two gamesalso featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58.

• Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FCShakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories.

• Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• This season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage (including, aswith all records, the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage) since the UEFAChampions League began. In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders andlost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
