Welcome Back Circle K at UCR!!!

Joining Circle K definitely has a lot of benefits. First off, we are part of a bigger Kiwanis

Family. Our sponsoring Riverside Kiwanis Club has members from all different kinds of professions

and if you get to know them and vice versa, they may know just the person to refer you to for a

future job, or they may be someone to go to for a letter of recommendation. We are certainly very

grateful for all that they do for us. Another way Circle K can benefit you is the development of

leadership skills. There are so many opportunities for you to take on leadership roles and to learn

from those experiences. It can really help to build your resume. And most important, Circle K not

only helps broaden your networking and develop your leadership skills, you get the opportunity of

a lifetime to give back to the community, which really does feel good, [really good karma if that's in

your philosophy] and you make some really great friends along the way. It may sound cheesy, but

it really is true as I've personally seen people grow so much in this organization, as they become

individuals who are ready to face the "real world" with much more confidence than they had

before joining the club and I've really seen how the members of this organization help each other

through thick and thin, forming friendships that last a lifetime [yep... cheesy]. The experiences in

Circle K really build character and teaches you many things along the way. There just aren't enough

words to how wonderful this organization really is.

But don't take my word for it. Make this club yours and experience it firsthand! And if

you're returning for another great year, you better be ready to 1up on service, leadership, and

fellowship!

-Jenny Cheung

I hope you all had an incredible summer and are

getting to a great start for the new school year! I

can't wait to see everyone again and to meet all

the new faces!

About 3 months ago, this question was asked

on formspring.me/ucrcki: "What are the benefits

of joining the Circle K?" I had to jump at the

opportunity to answer this question!

Page 4: UCR CKI Bulletin 2

What’s Up Riverside!!! Grrrr….

For those of you that are returning to our club I’d like to thank you for your dedication and loyalty to this awesome organization this year. For those who are new please do not feel too discouraged, this is the best time to start in becoming that super member we know you are. Don’t worry our newly elected and appointed board will ensure more great opportunities for you to build that greatness for you and the club.

Believe in your officers as they will lead this club to more exciting things and break new records that this district hasn’t seen before. If you have any new exciting idea please feel free to talk to your officers because they are more than willing to expand their view of service throughout the community and more. Stand by your brothers and sisters as you continue this journey to bring this world to a better place. As Lieutenant Governor, I will try my best to support this club in every way so UCR may build on their representation of greatness. You will hear from me time to time about various updates that the district has to offer. Please feel free to approach me if you have any questions or just want to chill. I am here to serve you and act as a resource center so whenever you need anything just let me know. I look forward in meeting and working with you all this coming year. I hope to see everyone at our biggest event for fall quarter. Fall Training Conference brings in tons of opportunities for members to learn and grow as a person and a leader. It’s one event that you won’t forget. So bring your A game and see you all there. This is our year, let’s show the other clubs that R’side is the only side.

Hello!

I’m Casey Hewson, now a fourth year psychology major. I joined UCR

CKI my second year. I am now not only a general member, but also the

Desert Oasis Executive Assistant of Service for our Lt. Governor Steven

Wang. Basically, I assist Steven with whatever he needs, which can

range from social support and being an involved member to helping

organize events/materials and proof reading. We also have an

Executive Assistant of Administration, Justin Misa from UNLV, who has

been an immense help in taking over the technological aspect to my

job. Therefore, everyone should go checkout the new DO Website!

DesertOasisCKI.org! Shout out to Jenny for helping my idea come to

life. On a similar note, please attend WAW weekends (Weekend

Awesomeness Weekend weekends), where our divisional counsel

meetings (DCMs) are and we have tons of fun. Also, please support

Justin Misa by reading and contributing to the Desert Oasis

Newsletter! What are my goals? To effectively help Steven with

whatever he needs, offer new ideas to help us continually improve,

encourage communication and unity, and have fun. DOEAoS is my first

leadership position with CKI and I’m extremely honored and elated. I

hope to do my best and serve UCR CKI well. Feel free to talk to me

about anything CKI and nonCKI related.

Lots of Love,

Casey Hewson

Kiwanis Luncheon By Crista Cabahug

Every Thursday at 12 pm, the Riverside Kiwanis

International hosts their weekly meetings at the

YMCA. They graciously invite us to attend their

Kiwanis Luncheons. At these meetings, we are able

to keep updated on what our sponsoring Kiwanis

Club is doing. First, the YMCA provides lunch, and

we are able to mingle and get to know our

Kiwanians. After we eat, they introduce all of their

guests, along with us. The president then opens the

floor to updates any of the Kiwanians may have.

Afterward, the president “fines” selected members,

depending on whether or not they traveled or great

news just occurred in their lives. Fines are basically

when the chosen Kiwanian must donate a particular

amount of money that the president decides.

Sometimes, they will have a guest speaker to

announce events or new establishments that are

relevant to the Riverside Community. During the

whole meeting, the Kiwanians are very lively and

fun to be around. It is a great pleasure to be able to

attend these luncheons every week to strengthen

our bonds between UCR Circle K and Riverside

Kiwanis.

Soup Kitchen by Chau Tran

For me, it is always a great experience to be able to do

good for the unfortunate. Although I commute to and

from UCR daily (making it hard to attend service projects

on the weekends), I always find the time to do service

and to give back to the community whenever possible.

By going to soup kitchen, it keeps me active, especially

during the summer when I only took one class. It

becomes repetitive showing up to soup kitchen every

week by serving drinks and cleaning up after them, but

there are differences I noticed from one week to another

that keep motivating me to go.

First off, you don’t meet the same people every time I go

to soup kitchen. Most of the people I recently met during

the summer are UCR students not in Circle K who already

graduated and are currently looking into grad school.

Every week, there’s usually someone new who you

might not have seen before volunteer at this event. Most

of the people I met heard about this event through

“word of mouth” from their friends. Second, the meals

they serve to the homeless are not the same every week.

One week, they serve hot dogs, another week they could

serve tacos, and on a third week, they could serve pasta.

Whatever the food served, the homeless are very

pleased to be served a hearty dinner.

Bear Fact Orientation Tabling

By: Crista Cabahug

Bear Facts Orientation is when all of the

incoming freshmen are required to come to the UCR

campus and check out the classrooms, clubs,

sleepover in the dorms, register into classes and

most importantly meet new people! During this

event, they allow all of the organizations on campus

to table during a specified block of time so all of the

freshmen can see what associations UCR has to

offer. There were ten different orientations sessions,

and Circle K International made it to every single

one. While we tabled we met a variety of new faces.

Some were past Key clubbers or Kiwins; others had

never done service in their lives. Despite the

differences, a large array of freshmen all seemed to

have interest in our club. After countless of sign-ups,

and mingling with the incoming freshmen, there

seems to be a bright future for UCR Circle K with all

of the new energy we will be bringing into our club

this fall quarter. Due to the amazing turnouts at Bear

Facts Tabling, we were able to spread the word

about our marvelous organization and have fun all at

the same time.

AVP Hermosa Beach By: Jackelyn Rivera

The summer was near and what better way to spend ones summer than to hit the beach, filled with its warm summer rays and relaxing sounds of the waves hitting the soft sand, but of course as Circle-Ker’s, we were not there to simply relax, but were there to work, to do service. We participated in the annual summer beach volleyball tournament AVP at Hermosa Beach. This project now seems to be becoming a summer tradition as this is our second year participating. We drove down to the beach and helped the professional volleyball players by chasing down the volleyballs and by becoming ref’s for a couple of games. This was a great way to see a live game of beach volleyball while helping them out. While standing out in the heat for many hours our shift was finally over and we decided to grab some lunch and explore the wonders and free snacks that the tournament had to offer. We grabbed our burgers and chicken sandwiches and we snagged our spots under a shady bridge and we started our 3rd summer meeting. The meeting at the beach was a new scene from the regular classroom. After the meetings adjournment we could finally relax at the beach and get our summer tans.

By: Jonathan Sinnot

As the Single-Service Chair for CKI at UCR, it was time for me to devise my first

large-scale service project. Thus sparked KICKS (Keeping Involved + Circle K

Service) for Kids presents…stART.

The project showcased donated artwork that was created by members of various Circle

K chapters and members of the UCR community. All of the pieces of art were

presented at the event, which took place on July 30. 2010. As the sun set on the

beautiful summer’s eve, Circle K members, outside of the Riverside area, began to

arrive. Later joined along with two prominent UCR staff, Jeff Eppley of Student

Conduct and Academic Integrity and Rick Vargas of the Transfer Resources Center, the

event goers enjoyed the laidback atmosphere. Soulful and jazzy hip hop music filled

the air, as attendees spent an hour wandering around the St. Andrews Newman Center

amphitheater bidding and voting on their favorite pieces of art.

As the bidding came to a close, Burgundy Skies, a local funk/alternative band by way of

Los Angeles, performed a quick yet vibrant set of original songs and Motown covers.

Their vivacious, yet cool vibe energized the crowd as the heat started to fade away,

transitioning into a refreshing summer’s night.

After the performance, each art piece was presented to the crowd, later revealing which

attendee had won the rights to purchase the artwork. As the event was drawing near to

a close, the votes of the top two favorite artists were revealed. Ryan David Lara and

Lenny Longo won 2nd

and 1st place, respectively. After they received their respective

gift cards for obtaining the favorite votes, stART came to an end.

The total amount raised at the event was $502. Due to the successful nature of the

event, the Kiwanis club donated an additional $100, bringing the amount fundraised for

PTP to an astonishing $602. The event met universal acclaim and praise, opening the

door for a second art auction to take place in March 2011, to be named KICKS for Kids

presents…restART.

Page 11: UCR CKI Bulletin 2

From the 19th of August to the 21st, about 85 Circle K members

traveled to Reno, Nevada for our District Summer Service

Social. The name speaks for itself, as the afternoons were

packed with service projects hosted by our District Service

Team, and ended with social gatherings. Most of our indoor

service time was spent making 77 arts and crafts packets for

children Renown Children Hospital. Each of these kits

contained a beaded bracelet, lanyard keychain and get well

cards. Instructions on how to make these things were included

as well, in case the patients wanted to try it out for

themselves.

Other than the indoor service projects that were held next to

our Circle K informational booth at Kiwanis DCON, we also had a Eat for Service at Qdoba on Thursday night and a river

clean up at Mayberry Park on Friday morning. The 20% off of our receipts went towards UNICEF’s Six Cents Initiative.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go to the Truckee River clean up, as I was tabling back at Kiwanis DCON with other

District Kiwanis Family Committee members. However, I heard that the view was very nice and that everyone did a great

job. Later that day, after the indoor service projects, the District Kiwanis Family Committee put on their Mocktail Party.

Many Kiwanians came up to the suite and socialized with various Circle K members. Nicely displayed snacks were put out

in platters around the room and mixed non-alcoholic drinks were provided at the bar. It was a fantastic event that got

great reviews. After that, everyone split into groups and had dinner in different places both in and out of the

casino/hotel.

On the last day, the District Kiwanis Family

Committee hosted a Key 2 College for local high school

students. Although there was a low turn out rate, the

workshops went well and the presenters were prepared in

their material. Attendees were able to learn things from

financial aid to the application process to college myths.

And of course, before everyone left, we went out for dinner

at a local restaurant for one last social. Overall, DSSS was a

very nice event, one that I recommend that everyone

attend at least once in their Circle K careers.

Friday we picked up Valerie Silvas, CKI president-to-be for

CSU San Bernardino and were on our way. We arrived in Vegas

about 4pm and went to the Boys and Girls club to help watch and

play with the kids. They have crazy cool games like bumper pool and

carpet bowling. Crista and I played with a couple twins who were so

energetic that they were jumping into the splits. Then we went and

ate on the UNLV campus for free thanks to Kevin Goble being an

RA. Then we went to fashion mall and the strip.

Saturday we attempted to walk dogs for the animal shelter,

but there wasn't enough room in the orientation. As an alternative we

went and had breakfast at a Hawaiian restaurant. We then made

hygiene packs for the local Safe Haven. Definite highlight was boys

vs. girls bowling. Girl team theme was hotness, thus our nicknames:

KSexxy (me), LisaBeast (Lisa), Pammelme (Pam), Valilious

(Valerie), and Cabahuggahugga (Crista). The low scores are

supposed to have a chubby bunny challenge. We then went to CiCi's

pizza and had our divisional counsel meeting. Unbelievable

brownies, enough said. After that we went to karaoke and sang our

hearts out. After that we went out onto the strip again and ended up

eating the 2 dollar special at a casino at 2am. Then we went back to

Shuan's and passed out.

Sunday we went to Danielle's house and swam and bbq'd.

Then we had a 6hr drive home! Major thanks to Shaun Pinlac for

letting us stay at his place and to all of Vegas for the love!

-Casey Hewson

Page 13: UCR CKI Bulletin 2

Monday: Antonious Pizza Fundraiser

In the middle of busy downtown

Riverside, is a little pizza parlor just by Coffee

Bean & Tea Leaf. For about the next hour, the

club filled up the restaurant with people,

[happy] noise and fundraiser flyers. Although

we were a bit of a handful, the staff was

extraordinarily gracious and even gave us a

few extra dollars!

Tuesday: Day at the Park BBQ

Yes, it was raining. No, we

did not have a day at the park with

barbeque. But we did meet up at

Social & Spirit Chairs Justin and

Will’s house for some games and

snacks! Food, friends and fun!

Wednesday: Ice skating Social

For those of us who are in Riverside

most days of the year, it’s considered lucky if

we aren’t dying in the heat. But fortunately for

us, there is an ice skating rink on Tyler, just

about a 10-15 minute drive away. On

Wednesday night, groups of our members set

out to either 1. amaze everyone with their

awesome (ice skating) skills or 2. embarrass

themselves with… their (butt landing)

awesome skills.

By: Elizabeth Huang

To start off our year with all of our tenets, service, leadership and fellowship, UCR Circle

K hosted a Meet & Greet week. If you were unable to attend the events with us, here are some

brief recaps:

Page 14: UCR CKI Bulletin 2

Saturday: CKI 101 - Shakey's

Fundraiser afterwards!

Great job, Jackelyn! On Saturday,

those who attended CKI 101 were able to go

through not only informational, but also

entertaining, workshops hosted by our very

own members and officers! Workshops

included topics such as how to chair an event,

CKI code of conduct and more. So after a day

of learning, it was off to a scavenger hunt!

And of course, with all that hard work and

running around, the fundraiser at Shakey’s

was welcomed with empty stomachs.

Friday: Adopted Street Cleanup

♪Clean up, clean up, everybody,

everywhere… ♫ Haha, sorry, I had to. (; An

astonishing 37 people came out to this event!

Thanks to all of you, our street is without a stray

tire, tumbleweed or TV. Whoever said that

college students were lazy? … Anyone want to

clean my room?

Thursday: FIRST GENERAL MEETING!

With a total of 151 people in attendance,

we filled the entire room until a few unlucky

stragglers could not squeeze in any longer. As

the icebreaker ensued, I was sure pedestrians

out on the ground floor outside could hear us.

But shh! Don’t tell the fire department!

Stephanie Rivera, Treasurer

Major: Liberal Studies, 3rd

year

Hello everyone, I have been a member of Circle K since my

freshmen year of college, at first I was hesitant to join because the

meetings always had a lot of cheering and at that time cheering

wasn’t my thing. However, once I started going out to new events

and started to talk to more people, this club became much more fun

and exciting. I felt with joining CKI, college would be much more fun,

and I was right. I’m so glad I decided to join such an amazing

organization. Many times it is hard to explain how worthwhile and

awesome this club is because sometimes you have to experience it

for yourself. To me this club is much more than another club, it has

made my college experience worthwhile. :)

Kiwanis Corner

The heart and soul of Circle K International lies in the hands of the members as

well as dedication to the three tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship.

However, without the Kiwanis, there would not be service events, luncheons,

conventions, or meetings. A truly scary thought, but thankfully we have the

wonderful Kiwanis for support, guidance and direction to help make Circle K as

wonderful as it is. These profiles are just a glimpse of some of the Riverside

Kiwanis Club whom sponsor our Circle K.

Joseph Telezinski

1. What is your reason for being involved with the Kiwanis

Club?

I got involved with the club in order to deepen my

relationship with my community. I have stayed with the

club because it has turned out to be a wonderful way to help

people and get to know others that are concerned about and

interested in serving the needs of the local area.

2. How long have you been a part of Riverside Kiwanis?

I’ve been in the club about 4 years, and I’m still considered

one of the newer members.

3. Do you have a random fun fact for us?

I was Drum Major for Riverside’s Norte Vista High School

Marching Band in 1983-84.

Michele Calia

Michele joined Kiwanis for the service and the

fun activities. Michele has her own Mary Kay
