The City of LahoreOnce walled and contained within thirteen
gates, the city of Lahore has now expanded into
a mega city with a population count of nearly ten
million. This historic city has been an important
seat of power in different eras. It was the capital
city for the Ghaznavids rule in the 12th century;for the Mughals in the 16th century; the Sikhs in
the 19th century and the regional capital during
the British rule in the 19th and the 20th
centuries.
The ageless landmarks of Lahore’s historical
journey stretch across the suburbs of the city.
Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, Shalimar
Gardens, mausoleums of Jahangir and
The Lahore Museum was established in 1864 in Lahore on Mall Road in front of Punjab University.

University of Central Punjab
Noorjahan continue to be silent yet eloquent
historians of their times. Similarly, the British
Gothic structures like the Lahore High Court, the
General Post Office, Lahore Museum are the
concrete footprints of the British rule here.
What can be termed as a positive contribution by
the British rulers for the betterment of the
people of Lahore and the region was the
establishment of some of the outstanding
educational institutions over the soil of Lahore.
These include King Edward Medical College in
1860, Government College, Lahore in 1864, the
University of the Punjab in 1882, and Kinnaird
College in 1913, in addition to scores of other
learning institutes of different disciplines.
Ever since, Lahore has been the centre and
source of remarkable economic, cultural and
academic progress in the region. It is called the
city of colleges, having the largest number oflearning institutions on its soil. Amongst them is
also the University of Central Punjab, that is
remarkably playing its part in augmenting the
academic standards in the city as well as in the
country.
The city, over a relatively brief period of time, has
made huge progress in the field of journalism,
too. Hosts of TV stations and a number of
newspapers and other publications are
providing news and commentaries 24/7.
Lahore has the honor to be the eternal resting
place of a number of saints. Individuals like Ali
Hajveri, Bibi Pak Daman and other noble souls,
reposing since centuries in the crust of Lahore,
continue to gravitate millions to their shrines.
When it comes to leisure and recreation, besides
other pursuits, Lahorees enjoy eating with fervor
and flavor. No wonder, food stalls and food
streets have a booming business round the year.
However, some of the Lahore eating spots have
also been the meet points for intellectuals and
scholars. Pak Tea House is one of those places
where people like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ibne Insha,
Saadat Hassan Manto and others sipped their tea
and shaped their ideas.
Fostering its own unique and abiding values,
Lahore continues to march forward, true to its
axiomatic depiction: Lahore is Lahore.

University of Central Punjab
The University of Central Punjab (UCP)Education in the twenty-first century demands a
balance between continuity and change. The
technological leaps and the consequences
thereof have overtaken the old educational
paradigms and new concepts have emerged in
the world of learning. The Punjab Group of
Colleges (PGC) was among the first to realize this
transition and its challenges. The PGC, therefore,
submitted a petition to the Government of the
Punjab, in August 1996, to allow to establish a
university in the province. A No Objection
Certificate was issued in October 1999. The
charter to establish the University of Central
Punjab (UCP) was awarded in April 2002. Thus
this University clinched the distinction of
becoming the first private sector university in
the Punjab which acquired the status of a degree
awarding institution.
When the University came into operations in
October 1999, it offered courses in Management
Studies, Information Technology, Commerce
and Law through its principal constituents i.e.
Punjab College of Business Administration
(PCBA), Punjab Institute of Computer Sciences
(PICS), Punjab College of Commerce (PCC),
Punjab Law College (PLC) and Punjab College of
Information Technology (PCIT), all situated in
Lahore.
These Colleges were restructured as Faculties ofthe University and became:
1. UCP Business School
2. Faculty of Information Technology
3. Faculty of Commerce
4. Faculty of Engineering

Participation, etc. = 30 %
Mid-Term Examination = 30 %
Final Examination = 40 %
Final ExaminationA student must appear in all tests/ examinations
as scheduled. However, if a student fails to appear

given in the academic calendar of each term and
is provided to all students by the concerned

dates. Exceptions may be granted only to
individual students in case of an emergency or
other compelling circumstances beyond human

Course Numbering SystemEach course number consists of two parts. The
first part contains at most four letters indicating
the subject while the second part contains a
four-digit number. The first digit indicates the
course level. The second digit indicates the field of
subject, the third digit indicates the course
number of the field and the fourth number is
reserved for the number of credit hours. A student

Grades and Grading SystemAll students receive grade reports indicating
academic progress at the end of each semester for
which they were enrolled. UCP strictly follows a
4-point grading system similar to the one
prevalent at most of the accredited institutions
throughout the globe. The numerical equivalence
of letter grades is given below:
Semester Credit HoursOne semester credit hour means that a particular
course must have at least one & half hour of class
contact per week for a period of 16 weeks. Hence
a course of three-semester credit hours will meet
for approximately 48 hours or 2880 minutes
during a semester. During one semester a student
can take up to 5 courses or 15 semester credit
hours. The time allocated for Mid.-term and Final
examinations is excluded from this computation
of class contact hours.
Summer SemesterA three semester credit hour course can also be
completed in 6-8 weeks time provided the class
contact of at least 2880 minutes is completed
within this time period. Since courses completedin summers are not counted towards degree

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is one
of the younger faculties of UCP. Established in
2009, FASS not only teaches degree programs
at graduate and undergraduate level in Arts
and Humanities, but also provides support
across faculties in teaching language,
humanities and social sciences courses.
A conscious effort is made to make curriculum,
taught in various programs, contemporary and
at the same time challenging to foster a spirit of
critical inquiry, an urge to discover, to learn, and
to reflect on issues facing humanity
perennially. Although study of liberal arts and
social sciences is given a lot of importance in
higher education all over the world, students in
Pakistan are usually ambivalent about earning
a degree in arts and social sciences subjects.
They think that a degree in social sciences
hampers their job prospects and does not
develop skills and attitudes needed for success
in professional paths they choose in their lives.
To dispel such misconceptions, we have
devised curriculum which is contemporary in
course selection, a learning environment which
is interactive and robust, all to ensure that
students acquire well developed
communication and interpretive skills, a habit
for independent thinking, and a sense of
personal and professional responsibility that
employers look for potential candidates ready
to serve in today’s job market.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences currently
comprises four departments, Department of
Islamic studies, Department of Psychology,
Department of Economics and Finance, and
Department of English.
Department of Islamic Studies was established
first which aims at producing religious scholars
who are enlightened, open to free inquiry,
tolerant and eclectic in their understanding
and interpretation of the teachings of Islam by
seeking guidance directly from the Quran and

Sunnah. Department of Islamic Studies offers
BS (Honors) Islamic studies, and MA in Islamic
Studies.
To broaden the sphere of studies and program
offerings, FASS has recently added Department
of Economics, Department of English, and
Department of Psychology; all offer a Bachelor
of Science (Honors) degree in their respective
subjects. A number of Majors and Minors are
offered to cater to diverse interests and
professional ambitions of students. Students
are allowed to choose courses and devise
combinations of majors and minors which are
most relevant to them, while still enjoying a
degree which falls under HEC guidelines.
We invite you to visit and interact with our
faculty and students in the department. You
will be happy that you have made a choice to
study in a program that gives you the
opportunity to reflect upon and discuss issues
that are of great importance not just to
Pakistan, but the rest of the world as well. This
degree would lead you to the new horizons.Whether you choose to make a career in media,
civil services, NGOs, education, business and
industry etc., or you choose to go for higher
studies, your choices are limitless with a degree
in social sciences.

Psychology is increasingly being recognized
as one of the most important disciplines not
only in the fields of business, management
and economic decision making, but also
among the entire body of Social Sciences.Recently, the Nobel Prize for Economics went
to a psychologist who had devoted his
academic career to discovering as to how
people make financial decisions. National
education data shows that psychology is
among the most popular disciplines in
Pakistan. At the moment, there are thousands
of psychology graduates without too many
opportunities for post-graduate education or
specialization. The Psychology Department at
UCP seeks to meet the needs of these
students while also being sensitive to the
needs of the job market.
In addition to catering for the needs of
psychology graduates, the Psychology
Department strives to meet the needs of
industry as well, which at the moment is
plagued by demoralization and
de-motivation. This year we plan to launch
several psychology-based training programs
for people in industry, business andmanagement to help improve their
performance and career prospects. We will
hold special certificate courses and
workshops for HR professionals so that they
can perform better in their personal and
professional capacity. Workshops on Time
Management and Stress Management will
also be held for professionals from different
fields.
We also equip students in other faculties with
basic knowledge of psychology by offeringcertain introductory level courses. This
practice will continue this year with an effort
to rationalize and standardize the input
provided by the department.

Dr. Bashir AhmadHead of Department, EconomicsDr. Bashir Ahmad is a Professor and Head of the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and
Social Sciences. He obtained his doctoral degree from Michigan State University, USA. He has a vast
experience of around 50 years, working in various public and private sector organizations of
Pakistan, including Punjab Public Service Commission, Punjab Planning and Development
Department, and Government College University, Lahore. Dr. Bashir has a strong research interest in
the area of Farm Mechanization and Agricultural Development. He has written various research
articles for renowned national and international journals, conferences and symposiums.
The critical role of the subject of Economics and
the economists in identification of and
suggesting remedial measures for the multiple
problems hindering the socio-economic growth
of the various societies, is very well recognized
not only in Pakistan but all over the world. Thedepartment of Economics was, therefore, started
from the very beginning of the UCP for teaching
the subjects of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics,
Economic Analysis and Managerial Economics to
support the BBA and MBA programs of faculty of
management studies.
In pursuance of our long-term vision, however, BS
(Hons) Economics and Finance was launched in
FASS in Fall 2011. Continuing our progressive
approach, in accordance with our vision, a
separate and independent Economics
Department has been established in the FASS in
Fall 2012. This department has prepared
programs for higher education in Economics
covering MS, M.Phil and PhD in Economics. These
programs have been approved by the competent
authority.
However, MS/M.Phil Program will be started from
Fall 2013 followed by PhD in later semesters. The
graduate scholars of our MS/M.Phil and PhD
programs will be available for jobs in the public
and private sector; specifically, teaching and
research institutions, banking sector, variousministries/ departments of Planning and
Development, Finance, Commerce etc.
Furthermore, they can start their own business in
different economic sectors and professional
organizations of Management, Accountancy,
Consultancy, Insurance , Corporate sector etc.
At its present stage of development, Pakistan is
facing multiple constraints in the way of its
economic growth. One of the most serious
bottlenecks is lack of high level professionals
having command over knowledge and
application in various areas of development,
particularly in policy making, its implementation
and evaluation. Even teaching, research and
normal operations of the various institutions in
the public and private sector suffer due to their
inadequacy.

MS/M.Phil (Economics) is a research based 18
years degree program (leading to PhD),
intended to investigate and discover solutions
to national and international issues. Two factorscontribute to the high quality of research and
training of our students: one is strong
foundation in basic topics of economics; the
other is to create a research-led environment
where students work alongside leading
researchers to develop the skills required to
become professional economists, researchers
and analysts. Every M.Phil student completing
his/her coursework has to write a thesis of six
credit hours in the final semester. For MS
(Economics) required research credit hours (6)
can be converted into 2 courses of 3 credit
hours each.
Program ObjectivesAt its present stage of development, Pakistan is
facing multiple constraints in its progress in
economic growth. One of the most serious
bottle necks is lack of high level professionals

application in various areas of development;
particularly, in policy making, its

research and normal operations of the various
institutions in the public and private sector
suffer due to their inadequacy.
Foreign sources of training are becominginaccessible for most people due to their high
cost and limited admission capacity.
Furthermore, local research is required for real
understanding and solution of our national,
economic problems. We shall, therefore, have
to produce the desired professionals locally. To
achieve this objective, the MS and PhD
programs in Economics are being launched in
the UCP.
Career Scopes/ Opportunities The output of the MS and PhD programs will be
available for jobs in the public and private
sector, teaching and research institutions,
banking sector, various ministries at the federal
