USU Facilities is pleased to
announce Tyler Gudmundson as the
employee of the month for
September 2017. Tyler has worked
for Facilities as a part-time
employee for about 18 months and
was hired on as a full-time employee
as of March 2016. Before coming to
Facilities, Tyler worked at both
construction and landscaping.
Rob Reeder, Director of
Facilities Maintenance and LOAM,
has said, “Tyler has a very tightknit
and loyal crew. The turnover is low
and they are a very cohesive unit; I
attribute this to Tyler. He always
finds methods to improve the
process on whatever he’s working on
and his vision is to make sure that
he runs an efficient operation and
that everyone is comfortable
working there. Tyler is truly a
natural leader.”
Kalilou Fofana, Facilities
Maintenance Coordinator and
nominator, has said, “Tyler is the
Team Leader in the HPER Cluster.
He works the graveyard shift
full-time, is a full-time student

Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tyler
is currently attending USU and plans to
graduate in 2019 with his Social Studies
Composite degree.
Tyler & his wife, Samantha,
have been married for two years and
currently live at Aggie Village. In their
free time they like to hike and camp.
They also enjoy traveling and recently
went on a history tour of NYC,
Washington DC, and Pennsylvania.
Tyler is a huge Dallas
Cowboys fan. He would love to be able
to attend a game in person at Cowboys
Stadium… aka; Jerry World! When
Tyler isn’t dreaming of The Cowboys,
his real love is working on his
grandparent’s ranch in Bear Lake,
where they raise beef cattle. For Tyler,
there isn’t anything better than being
on a horse and working the cattle. His
ultimate goal is to return to Bear Lake
with Samantha and teach History at
Bear Lake High School.
Congratulations to Tyler on this
well-deserved recognition!

and is married! Even with all
these responsibilities and
challenges in his life, he is able
to find balance. Tyler normally
works the graveyard shift, but
whenever his help is needed during
the daytime hours, he always makes
it work. I believe Tyler is a
model employee; he is punctual,
dependable, flexible, goal & result
oriented, willing to work outside of
his job description, and most
importantly, willing to share his
knowledge. On top of all this, he is
continuously giving his all and
going above and beyond what is
expected of him. I truly appreciate
all Tyler does.”
Tyler was born in Logan
and raised in Idaho Falls, ID. He
has three brothers and one sister;
two siblings are at USU, one is on a
full-time mission and one lives at
home with their parents in Idaho
Falls. Tyler graduated from
Bonneville High School in Idaho
Falls. He then went on to earn his
EMT License and then to serve a

Innovation Award: Rick Hepworth recently identified a solution to a well known design fault of the variable air volume floor boxes that condition the indoor spaces of the Merrill Library. His solution literally is “outside the box”. The solution retrofits readily available components to the outside of the existing variable air volume floor box and removes the fault prone internal mechanism. These components cost less than half the amount of having to replace the box. The solution that Rick came up with will save money by cutting down on maintenance and by reducing comfort call complaints from the occupants. Thanks to Rick for a job well done and for all he does to save the University time and money.

Use the Right Tool for the Job: Take the time to find the right tool for the job. In addition to using the right tool, keep tolls and equipment in good repair
and maintain sharp cutting blades:
Periodically inspect tools for cracks, wear, and proper function.
Repair or replace worn or cut power cords.
Tools, such as sockets and wrenches that are worn, should be replaced to prevent slippage.
Dull utility knives or saw blades take more effort and force to cut material. Keep blades sharp!
Don’t use broken tools!
Use a good pair of leather gloves to prevent wood splinters, severe lacerations, and punctures.

FYI… one of the bricks that was laid in the USU
Family Life Building in 1888, has been removed
in order to make room for an A/C unit.
The brick had a good run… 129 years!
