PENSIOENARIS: TWEE OORREED HOM OM IN DIAMANTHANDELMAATSKAPPY TE BELÊ
Uit ‘bloedgeld’ bedriegMAGRIET THERON
@magrietron
“As ek daardiemenseweer sien, gaanek my skolliemaniere uithaal.”
Hy het my verseker dat ek binne 30dae R600 sou verdien as ek R2 000 by hullebelê,” sê Van Zyl.Van Zyl het hom toe R2 000 kontant gegee.Die beloofde R2 600 sou net voor Kersfees
weer in sy rekening uitkeer.“Toe daar geen geld in my rekening ver-
waarop Liebenberg sy adres aangee as Lie-benberg Racehorse and Stud Farm, Riet-draai, Lichtenburg.
Maardoen eknou self iets, is ek die eenmet ’n saakteen my,” sê Van Zyl bitter.

Hulle was wonderlik.”
Kol.
Hyis later ontslaan.

were preparing to go to the airport to headhome on 28 December.“I never saw exactly what happened, but
my niece said the dog grabbed Ella-Gracefrom behind for no apparent reason.”The dog was thought to be after her food
on the table. The owner of the dog tried to pull it off

lastedabout 10 seconds. “Any longer andmydaughter would’ve been dead.”In fact, even while Ella-Grace was receiv-

Runners tackle hills, wind
Almost 800 runners took to the hills of the Tygerberg Na-ture Reserve last Wednesday for the first leg of the SpurCape Summer Trail Series. The brave took the short courseover eight kilometers and the very brave went longer, over 12kilometers. The south-easter might have added to the chal-lenge for some, but brought welcome relief from the sum-mer heat. Although the experienced “mountain goats” madeit to the finish line before darkness fell, the majority of thefield’s runners were reliant on their headlamps to get themback to the bottom safely. Carina Roux captured some ofthe action. The next leg in the series is at KirstenboschBotanical Gardens on 23 January at 19:00. See www.trailse-ries.co.za for details.

For many years, faithful Tableview donorshave beenmakinguse of theWPBloodTrans-fusion Service’s (WPBTS) blood donationvenue at the Life Changers Church in RaatsDrive.
In recent times, there has been a steady in-crease in the Tableview blood donor num-bers and because of this WPBTS will be mov-ing its blood donation clinic to the Dutch Re-formed Church at 41 Grey Avenue.
“We will be able to increase our frequencyof visitations from once a month to at leasttwice a month, and donors from Life Chang-ers Church will be pleased to note that theclosing time at the Dutch Reformed Churchdonation venue is 19:15 – half an hour laterthan the previous venue,” says WPBTSspokesperson Marlize van der Merwe.
She says the new venue is a five minutedrive from Life Changers Church.
Even thoughblooddonorsmayonlydonateevery 56 days, the now twice monthly fre-quencywillmean that theService canaccom-modate four different groups of donors with-
in the two-month cycle, and that donors whomiss a blood donation clinic will never haveto wait longer than two weeks to make up forit.
Van der Merwe says all previous LifeChangers Church donors will receive a callfrom the WPBTS Call Centre explaining thechange in venue and have the opportunity ofobtaining further information.
“WPBTS invites the community of Table-view to visit the blood donation clinics. Thebasic donor criteria require donors to be atleast 16 years of age, weigh more than 50kg,be in good general health and live a safe andhealthy life-style. It is also important that adonor eats a substantial meal three to fourhours before donating blood and increase flu-id intake on the day,” Van der Merwe says.V For more clinic information, visit the WPBTS websiteat www.wpblood.org.za or contact the Service at021 507 6300. City’s online wasp app takes offTheCity’s newonlinewasp reporting ap-
plication is gaining popularity as morethan 600wasp reports have been logged
via this tool – mostly in January this year.Since the launch of the City of Cape
Town’s InvasiveWaspControl (IWC) projectover 9 000 European paper wasp nests havebeen removed from the core areas of infesta-tion such as Durbanville, Kuils River,Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Bellville. The IWC project controls the invasive Eu-
ropean paper and German wasps withinCity boundariesEuropeanpaperwaspnests have also been
removed fromhomes in SomersetWest, Gor-don’s Bay, Bothasig, Ottery, Plumstead,Constantia, Woodstock, Athlone, Wetton,Parklands, Sunningdale, Pinelands, Newl-ands and Rondebosch.According to amedia release issued by the
City of Cape Town last week, this indicatesthat the invasion is spreading tomore areas.
More than 2 000 people have accessed theCity of Cape Town’s new onlinewasp report-ing application since the launch of the appli-cation in November last year, according tothe media release. This user-friendly development tool has
made the logging of wasp reports more ac-cessible to members of the public, which al-lows for a quicker response time to havewasps removed.Interestingly, the data indicates that peo-
ple across the world, including from theUnited States of America, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand,Namibia and Kenya have visited the site atwww.edrr.co.za/wasps.According to international cases of inva-
sion involving the European paper and Ger-man wasps, these insects have the potentialto create problems ranging frombeing a nui-sance to having catastrophic economic im-pacts in the wine, deciduous fruit and bee-
keeping industries. The German wasp in particu-
lar is quite aggressive and thereare several reported cases ofthem stingingworkers harvest-ing grapes and other fruits. They can present a hazard to
people and home owners enjoy-ing the outdoors and uninten-tionally disturb a colony. These wasps also feed on ma-
ture grapes in the late summermonths and cause extensivedamage to vineyards.Theyarealsoknown toattack
and kill honeybees and infil-trate bee hives, which are detri-mental to the honey industry.Wasp season usually occursduring warmer periods, fromSeptember to May.“We can see that the waspsEuropean paper wasps sitting on their nest.
are spreading across the city. However, since the start of the wasp season, we haveremoved over 1 300 nests. This is far lessthan the previous corresponding seasonwhen 2 500 were removed. Wasps seem to belower in numbers than usual, likely due tothe weather patterns,” said Johan van derMerwe, mayoral committee member for en-ergy, environmental and spatial planning.“The City is therefore taking this opportu-
nity to remove as many wasp nests as possi-ble to try and decrease their presence aheadof the warmer days. Residents are encour-aged to use the online tool to report waspsightings so that the nests can be removedas soon as possible.“By using a simple online tool, the wasp
project is nowable to find the locationof newsightings and confirm the status of thesesightings instantly,” Van der Merwe said.Removal happens on a first-reported, first-
response basis and calls are queued accord-ing to the order of time reported.
Residents are advised that the sting fromthese wasps is particularly painful.Property owners are primarily responsi-
ble for pest control on their premises, andthe Citywill assist according to available ca-pacity.If nests are removed privately, property
owners areurged to senda report containingtheir street address and the number of nestsremoved to [email protected] as this helps with the City’s fu-ture planning and research, as well as deter-mining the movement of the wasps. The City’s IWC project does not respond
to reports outside the city boundaries, or toindigenouswasp reports, or reports of indig-enous bees.V For more information, residents should visitwww.capetowninvasives.org.za or visit www.facebook.com/ctinvasives. For queries or problems uploading wasp reports, residents can send an emailto [email protected] with “WASPS”in the subject line.

I write in agreement withPeter Smulik’s letter (“Greenmen cause problems”, Tyger-Burger, 13 January) wheredisenchantment is shown withthe new so-called Grand Planfor traffic.Over the last year since
traffic lights have been resetby those in charge, motoristshave had to tolerate sitting inrow after row of stationaryvehicles waiting for un-se-
‘Making our lives onthe road difficult’
quenced traffic lights to change. This not only causes a
wastage of expensive andprecious fuel and wear and tearon the vehicle, but also a lot ofdriver frustration and roadrage. Those in traffic manage-ment have succeeded in slowingtraffic right down, to a stand-still – more so on a Fridaywhen traffic is heavy. To make matters worse, once
the lights finally turn green andcars can gather speed, there isusually a speed trap waiting forthe unweary motorist.Meanwhile, in the ensuing
snarl-ups there is seldom atraffic officer to be seen assist-ing the flow. This smacks of nothelping – rather making ourlives on the road difficult.Meanwhile, at the municipal-
ity, long waiting lines are to beseen for those renewing theirvehicle licences, while Metropolice ticket cars outside forexpired licence discs. One cannot help but feel that
the powers that be are not thereto aid the motorist, but ratherto line municipal pockets.

I’d like to know whether thereis anyone with advice on howto quiet or shut down extreme-ly loud informal churches thathave moved into the buildingnext to our apartment building?I’ve complained to almost
everyone – from the SAPS toLaw Enforcement to MetroPolice. Everyone simply statesthat it is their right to religiousfreedom. But what about myrights? When these churcheshold services (Mondays,Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdaysand Sundays) it sounds as ifthey’re standing in my livingroom. I’ve had an environmen-tal health practitioner getinvolved, but nothing has beendone so far. LEWENSKIEKIE
By verdraagsaamheid gaan dit nie net

Many might recognise her face as theviolinist for Sterling EQ, but Durban-ville’s Renate Riedemann has found
her voice.Renate was still a member of the award
winning instrumental pop group when shedecided to sign herself up for singing lessons, equating the process to learning a new in-
strument. Along the way she discovered her“secret love for jazz”.“Itwas never something that Iwas exposed
to,” the classically trained musician ex-plains, adding: “I am smitten”.Sterling EQ had become a full time job for
Renate and while she describes her threeyears with the band as a “wonderful experi-ence”, she also wanted to create her ownmu-sical identity. As a freelance musician shefound the fulfilment of playing for every-
thing from theatre pieces to big pop shows. While recording strings for an album that
producer Johan Oberholzer was working on,Renate mentioned her singing to him and heopened up about his idea for an acoustic har-monic-driven Afrikaans act. The result wasthe folk Afrikaans girl-band Dogters vanMan, which Renate joined soon after leavingSterling EQ.“It spoke to so many young Afrikaans lis-
teners and they wanted something thatwasn’t that commercial.”The start of their success coincidedwith
a tumultuous time in the South Africanrecord industry and they became some-thing of a “one-hit wonder”, but it wasn’tlong before she struck out on her own. After recording “What Do You Say”, Re-
nate, unaware of normal music industrypractices, sent her track to radio stationsherself from her gmail account and “bysome miracle” RSG’s Amore Bekkerpicked up on the song.Since then Renate has been signed to
StoneBear &Mayor Records, an independ-ent boutique label started by Helmut Mei-jer and Lukas de Beer.Together they are working on a new sin-
gle, written by Lukas, “Another Storm”,which she hopes to release at the end of
February. The single may become part of aconcept album combining instrumental andvocal elements, but Renate doesn’t want tomake any promises yet.Renate is waiting to build her repertoire
before she performs solo shows, but in themeantime, music fans can catch her at theOude Libertas Amphitheatre on Sundaywhen she performs for Mauritz Lotz’s Kalei-doscopic Live show.V Tickets for the show are available at Computicket.
