View police station on Sunday night.It is claimed that six officers “stood by and

just watched” as one man assaulted anotherbehind the counter at the charge office.Station commander Col Dirk Vosloo said

at the time of going to print that the incidentis being investigated and that he cannotcomment further regarding the allegations.Eye-witness Schulla Pronk said it was one

of “the most bizarre evenings” of her life.She claims aman, his fiance andher sister

were allegedly assaulted by twopeoplewhilethe three, togetherwith a two-year-old child,

were seeking refuge at the local police sta-tion.The alleged fiasco started earlier that

evening while Pronk was driving.“I sawamanbeing dragged on the driver’s

side alongside a Yaris all the way from GieRoad down Koeberg Road towards PotsdamRoad.Hewashanging on to anopenwindow,his feet touching the road every now andagain. The car drove quite fast, but one timewhile it was going slower the man who washanging on to it lost his grip and nearlyrolled in front ofmy car. I saw that hewasn’t

injured and followed the car toMilnertonpo-lice station. There the occupants (a man, hisfiance, a women and a child) wanted to laya charge against the other man, but theywere told to go to Table View police station,since the incident originated from that ar-ea,” explains Pronk.She says the occupants were clearly in

shock andwere scared to drive back thewaythey came. Pronk says their pleas for a po-lice escort fell on deaf ears, so she decidedto escort them.

Once there Pronk heard that the man whohung onto the vehicle had brought the childback home and became very irrate when thechild called another man “daddy”.

He apparently clung onto the car windowwhile the occupants tried to flee.

While they were waiting to be helped, oneof the complainants saw the vehicle belong-ing to the man who tried to assault them pull-ing into a parking bay at the station, saysPronk.

“The man (in the police station) was terri-fied. He ran to two officers sitting in a vehi-cle and begged them to help him, but theyrefused. He then ran into the station, all theway to the back of the charge office desk. Theother man, who reeked of alcohol, was ac-companied by his sister. They barged intothe station, shouted at the three and proceed-ed to assault them!

“The man followed the other towards theback of the counter, punched him, andsmashed him against the glass. I found itvery strange that at no time did the six offic-ers who were there try prevent any of thisfighting. The man’s sister also attacked theother two women, but my attention was onthe two men behind the counter.”

After the chaos settled, an officer toldPronk he will take the attacker to jail, butthen she saw the officer escorting the manand his sister to their vehicle and allowedthem to drive off.

Pronk pointed out to the officer afterwardsthat the two were clearly inebriated, but shewas ignored.

Vosloo told TygerBurger yesterday thatboth men opened cases of assault against theother.

The Table View Community Police Forum

is apparently leaning on the police to fast-track the investigation.

Pressure will also come from higher pow-ers, according to Plato’s spokesperson.

Botha said the matter has been referred tothe Department of Community Safety’s Po-licing Complaints directorate. “MinisterPlato will also be taking this specific inci-dent up with the provincial police commis-sioner, Gen Arno Lamoer,” said Botha.

Pronk’s allegation that the cameras in thecharge office is not working could not be ver-ified at the time of going to print.

Pronk said she urged the three to go to theTable View police station. “I was sure theywould be safe there. I’ve also always told mychildren that if their lives are in danger thenthey should go to the nearest police station.So, the question is, if one cannot be safe ata police station, where can you be safe?”

Milnerton police suspect CharmaineAnn Naidoo might be up to her oldtricks again.

Just a few months after Naidoo admittedguilt in several cases of fraud, she is onceagain on the police’s radar following a newbout of fraudulent activity.

Police are looking for her in connectionwith seven recent cases, and need the pub-lic’s help to find her.

Whether she is guilty of being a repeat of-fender is up to the judge to decide, but sheis currently a suspect and Milnerton policehave a warrant for her arrest.

Last year Naidoo lured prospective rent-ers into paying deposits for Sunset Beachproperty that never belonged to her in thefirst place.TygerBurger reported on this in October

last year in the article “Rental ‘con artist’nabbed”.

Naidoo’s sentence was suspended.

Increase in fraudIn the latest cases of alleged fraud, the

suspect advertised her apartment in Mil-nerton on Gumtree in June and then askedrenters to deposit money into her bank ac-count.

Some of the prospective tenants evenviewed the flat beforehand.

Seven people paid the deposit, but whenthe time came to move into the flat arrived,they found several others wanting to move

into it on the same day.According to W/O Ettienne Pretorius,

Naidoo “can help the police in their investi-gation”.

She is originally from Durban.“If anyone is aware of her whereabouts

they should contact me at Milnerton po-lice,” he says.

Pretorius used the opportunity to warnthe public of an increase in fraudulent ac-tivities in and around Milnerton.

“Businesses, especially Montague Gar-dens, should be on their toes. It happens fartoo often that someone electronically trans-fer funds into an account, receives thegoods and then later the money in the ac-count is cancelled.

“This can happen if they pay money intoan account using a stolen cheque, for exam-ple.

“The money will reflect in your accountfor a few days, but then the bankwill cancelthe payment,” explains Pretorius.

Electronic salesHe adds that fraudulent electronic pay-

ments are rife on the Gumtree website.Second-hand goods are advertised, and

then a prospective buyerwillmake contact,“transfer” money and more often than notsend a courier to pick up the goods in placessuch as Century City.

After the goods are collected the sellerwill see that the money has been removedfrom his or her bank account.

The courier is often left completely in thedark and cannot be connected to the crime.

This makes the job of the police evenharder.

Pretorius says anothermethod used by offraudsters is to send the seller an SMS thatlooks just like the one banks send accountholders advising that money has been paidinto their account.

“The best thing to do is to wait a few daysand see if the money has indeed beencleared. Only then should they hand overthe goods to the buyer,” says Pretorius.

Two people arrested by Table View policewere recently sentenced to a total of 10 yearsimprisonment.In the first conviction, 21-year-old Aswin

Richenberg was found guilty of common rob-bery and sentenced to three years, and in thesecond, 39-year-old David Klaas was foundguilty for housebreaking residential and sen-tenced to seven years.Local police spokesperson, W/O Daphne

O’Reilly said at 18:30 on 2 April this year thecomplainant was sitting on the pavementoutside his friend’s house in Regent Road,Parklands when he was approached by Rich-enberg, who asked him if he could use hiscellphone to check the time.The complainantgave him the time without handing over thecellphone. Richenberg then lifted his shirtand revealed a knife tucked into the front of

his pants. He then snatched the cell phoneand walked away.W/OTersiusVanWyk investigated the sec-

ond incident and made the arrest.“On 7 February at 23:00 the complainant in

this case went to sleep and all the doors andwindows were locked. At 03:40 she woke upand heard footsteps in her house and saw anunknownman in the passage.” said O’Reilly.“Klaas then ran towards the bathroom andjumped through the window. Two crooks get ten years

A taxi driverwith outstandingwarrants to-talling R54 300 and R5 000 of contempt ofcourt notices was arrested after he tried tobribe Metro Police officers.The City of Cape Town’s mayoral com-

mittee member for safety and security, JPSmith, said this served as an example of thelengths people will go to in order to evadethe consequences of their actions.“Last week Friday members of the Metro

Police Camera Response Unit pulled overa taxi driver at the intersection of the N7and Bosmansdam Road in Milnerton forreckless and negligent driving. The taxi

driver tried to bribe the officers, but ranaway when his attempt came to nought. Of-ficers impounded the taxi and arrested thedriver when he arrived to collect the vehi-cle at the Ndabeni pound the followingday,” said Smith.“(The incident) speaks volumes about the

integrity of our staffmemberswhowerenotswayed by the prospect of easy money andstuck to the task at hand. We will not toler-ate such behaviour fromourmotorists, andthey will face charges for their originaltransgressions, but also for trying to bribeour staff,’ concluded Smith.

Bribe turns sour for taxi man

Themanager of a scrap yard in KyalamiDrive, Killarney Gardens, was arrestedlast week Tuesday when suspected sto-len property was found on the premises.The suspect appeared in court last

Thursday and was released on bail ofR3 000.According toMilnerton police spokes-

person, Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reil-ly, police officers came across a hugequantity of cables and base transceiverstation equipment at the scrap yard.“Inspectors from Vodacom and the

City of Cape Town were called to thescene where they identified the items astheir property. They also confirmed thatthese items are not allowed to be sold tothe scrap yard. A loss of R15 million wassuffered by Vodacom.”A base transceiver station is a piece

of equipment that facilitates wireless

communication between user equip-ment and a network.After finding and identifying these

items, Captain Abduragiem Bruyns andSergeant Angelo Makka arrested the 39-year-old manager for possession of sus-pected stolen items.“The Flash unit at Milnerton police

are responsible for second hand dealers,liquor licences and firearm licences.The unit ensures that second hand deal-ers comply with all the requirements asstipulated in the Second Hand DealersAct. Operations are conducted on aweekly basis at second hand dealers andscrap yards in the policing area,” saidO’Reilly.During the previous week fines to the

value of R7 500 were issued to scrapyards in Montague Gardens that did notcomply with regulations.

Aman was arrested just 30 minutes af-ter the City of Cape Town received atip-off that hewas allegedly removing

abalone from rocks at Melkbosstrand.TheCity of Cape Town’s law enforcement

officers nabbed the 28-year-old suspectedpoacher on Wednesdaylast week when theyfound a total of 64 abalo-ne in his possession.

JP Smith, mayoralcommittee member forsafety and security, saysofficers almost immedi-ately commenced with astop and search opera-tion in the area.

“A complaint was laidby a member of publicabout a man who had il-legally removed abalonefrom the rocks close totheMelkbosstrand Integrated Rapid Trans-port office,” he said.

“Law Enforcement officers investigatedthe complaint and soon apprehended thesuspectwhen they foundamanwithablackbackpack filled with abalone, as well as thetools used to remove them from the rocks.Poaching of abalone is a criminal offenceand suspects are detained at the police sta-tion for court appearances. If suspects arefound guilty, the magistrate will imposesentence.”

Smith thanked the community for theirsupport and hoped this would serve as awarning to other would-be poachers.

“We are watching and will work tireless-

ly with our partners to eradicate this prac-tice,” he said.

The team of volunteers at the anti-poach-ing unit (APU) in Melkbosstrand fight thescourge on a continual basis, and cannot doit without the help of the community.

“We always need more funds and man-power.Weholdvarious fund-raisersduring

the year for the localneighbourhood watch,and from there some ofthe funds are channelledto the APU. The nextfund-raiser will be a golfday on 7November atAt-lantic Beach,” saidAPU’s André van derMerwe.

He said the public gotbehind rhino poachingbut abalone poaching isjust as important.

“The abalone foundalong the Western Capecoastline are the onlytype of its kind in the

world, and projections indicate they couldbe extinct within five years if somethingdrastic isn’t done. People must also realisethat poachinggoeshand-in-handwithotherorganised crimes such as the drug trade,prostitution andmoney laundering. One of-ten finds that criminals don’t trade money,but trade in product instead.”

Van der Merwe said people needed to bewatchful and let the APU know of suspi-cious activity.

The man who has allegedly been targetingwomenwalking toCenturyCity and stealingtheir handbags and cellphones, has been ar-rested.The 39-year-old suspect from Phoenix wasarrested by Milnerton police after coopera-tion with Century City Security paid divi-dends.local police spokesperson, W/O DaphneO’Reilly, says themanappeared in court andthe case was postponed toMonday 4 August.“On Friday 24 July at 06:30 an incidenttook place in Martell Road, Tygerhof. Thevictim noticed a silver/grey vehicle, whichpulled up in front of her. The driver jumpedout and pointed a firearm at her.”The man demanded her handbag and cell-phone and drove off with her belongings.Soon thereafter the police requested the

assistance of Michael Wheeler of CenturyCity Security, whowere asked to go throughvideo footage to see if he could identify thevehicle.This was a success and the registrationnumber could be identified.The suspect was arrested at his house inPhoenix. Upon further investigation thecomplainant’s handbag and cell phone werefound in the boot of his car.“There were also other handbags and per-sonal belongings in the boot,” says O’Reilly.“The suspect was arrested and taken toMilnerton police station where he waslinked to three other robbery cases whichtook place in the last three weeks. We wishto thankCenturyCity Security for their con-stant assistance in fighting crime and bring-ing perpetrators to court.”

social media is the so-called fire chal-lenge where people voluntarily setthemselves alight by applying flam-mable liquids such as rubbing alcoholonto their body and filming the out-come, said Werner Vermaak of ER24in a media statement.“As far as we can determine one of

the first fire challenge videos were up-loaded in April 2012 on YouTube,where the user set his chest hairalight. Since it has been uploaded thevideo has had more than 100 000views,” he said.The challenge is to set yourself

alight and extinguish the flames asfast as you can. It rarely, however, hasa desirable outcome.“Wehavewatched almost ahundred

videos on the internet on this so-calledfire challenge and none of them waswithout injury, pain or even death. InBuffalo New York a 15-year-old boydied after participating in the firechallenge game,” Vermaak continued.It was reported in an online newspa-

per on 24 July this year that the NewYork teenager doused himself with al-cohol and was set ablaze by hisfriends.Apparently he was not near any wa-

ter source and could not stop the firefast enough.According to Vermaak, even getting

into water quickly can still leave seri-ous burns and inhalation burns canlead to suffocation.“Often people are posting challeng-

es on various social media sites forother users to follow, some of themending in death.”Challenges like the neknomination

where people down an alcohol bever-age, also had its fair share of victims.These challenges do not only affect

region of the Cape west coast give Blaauw-berg Hill a cursory glance, unaware of thehistoric battle of which the outcome had amost profound effect on the South Africa weknow today,” Durbanville Heritage Societysecretary Pam Beck wrote in a report aboutthe meeting.Shewrote in her report that at themeeting

“there was an amazing display of miniaturesoldiers, arrayed in their battle formationsduring the battle”.“Although the battle was of short dura-

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album,which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.
