Transcript of TXOLAN CAT 2013 FINALv2
Howdy. On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to Fort Worth and the 14th Annual TxOLAN Alpaca
Spectacular. We are grateful that you have chosen to spend your weekend with us.
As the cover of this book suggests, for the majority of the every year, Fort Worth is known as
“Cowtown.” Fort Worth earned this name as a result of its location on the Old Chisholm Trail and the
more than 4 million head of Longhorn cattle that were driven through here in the mid and late 1800’s,
some on their way to the railheads in Kansas. But on this weekend, the trails into Fort Worth have
“Longnecks” instead of Longhorns!
We are confident that this year’s show will offer excellent competition. And the alpacas will be evalu-
ated by two of the best judges that AOBA has to offer, Sharon Loner and Tim Lavan.
When you are not competing, please take a few minutes and visit our Vendors who have brought their
businesses to our show. Check out their products and services. I know they will appreciate that.
You have heard it before, because it is profoundly true, alpaca shows run on the fuel of volunteers.
This show is no exception. The Board would like to thank all the volunteers who have already put in
many hours in preparation for the show, with many more to go before the show concludes on Sunday
afternoon. If you are one of our guests, take a minute to thank some of the volunteers you will inter-
act with this weekend. Your appreciation of their efforts will be the “compensation” they will receive.
I would also like to offer a special “thank you” to all of our Show Sponsors. We are grateful for you.
Please know that we really do depend on you to make this show an economic success for the TxOLAN
Alpaca Association.
Finally, please let the Show Staff or the members of the Board know if there is anything that we can do
to make your show more enjoyable. Best of luck to everyone in the show rings.

Welcome to the 14th annual TxOLAN Alpaca Spectacular. Speaking for most of those involved in the
show over the years, this show is truly a labor of love for alpacas and all things alpaca!
The show would not be possible without the support of three groups of people: Volunteers. We just could not pull off a show of this caliber without the awesome group of volunteers
that we have. Many of our volunteers step up every year and know that you are so appreciated! This
year we have many that are new to volunteering and we say, "Thank You & welcome aboard"
Our Sponsors, again your continued support is appreciated and I urge everyone to go by and visit with
our sponsors and thank them for helping make our show possible.
Last, but not least, our participants. We know that for most of you, Fort Worth is not just around the
corner. Thank you for making the drive and sharing your alpacas with us.
Enjoy the show and have fun!

Tim Lavan, along with his wife, Cindy and their two boys have been breeding and raising alpacas
at Chase Tavern Farm in midcoast Maine since 1993. He is an AOBA certified halter, fleece and
performance judge trainer and has judged and evaluated
thousands of alpacas in and outside the USA. Tim has judged
more than 50 alpaca shows. He has written articles for Al-
pacas Magazine and has given lectures for numerous
camelid organizations. Chase Tavern Farm is home to more
than 60 alpacas, both suri and huacaya. Tim is a full time al-
paca farmer and is active in most of the daily activities on
the farm.
Sharon Loner and her husband, Frank, purchased their first alpacas in 1993 and are the owners of
Mile High Alpacas located in Parker, CO. Sharon soon learned that raising these beautiful animals
was her calling and within three years she left her professional ca-
reer to become an alpaca rancher full time.
Sharon is both AOBA and Internationally Certified to judge fleece and
halter alpaca shows. In 2004 she completed her international train-
ing through the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS) located in
Peru by Maggie Krieger and Dr. Julio Sumar and that same year be-
came AOBA certified. She remains an active farm member in the Al-
paca Breeders of the Rockies (ABR) and has served as a director for
the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA).
Sharon graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bache-
lors Degree in Secondary Education and Textiles. Sharon and Frank
have two daughters currently attending the University of Colorado
located in Boulder, CO. She and Frank are enjoying the second phase
in their lives as empty nesters.
Sharon’s goal while in the show ring is to see that every exhibitor
and their alpaca are comfortable, relaxed, and at the same time having an enjoyable experi-
ence. She makes sure each and every alpaca is evaluated fairly and honestly on a comparative
basis.
