It is a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. It is essential to note that the number of priests and ordinations in the United States has steadily declined in the past 50 years. Meanwhile, the number of parishes without a resident priest pastor has sharply increased in the same period of time. The men who answer the call to priesthood are special indeed, and they are working harder than ever before. Do not wait until a priest retires or is transferred to celebrate their service. Like Father’s Day, let Priesthood Sunday be the one day a year when we make it a point to make priests feel truly appreciated and special. Pray for vocations.

September 15, 2019 Dear friends in the Lord: Our hundred years ago, Pope Benedict XV wished to give new impetus to the missionary call to proclaim the Gospel. To mark this occasion, Pope Francis has called for the whole Church to observe an Extraordinary Missionary Month in October, which is World Mission month. Our archdiocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the altar to celebrate, with great oy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the poor. The theme for the Extraordinary Missionary Month is “Baptized and Sent: the Church of Christ on Mission in the World.” Pope Francis has indicated four dimension or ways to prepare for and lie out the month:

1. A personal encounter with Jesus Christ alive in His Church;

2. The witness of the Saints, the Missionary Martyrs, and the Confessors of Faith’

3. Biblical, catechetical, spiritual, and theological formation regarding the mission to the world;

4. Missionary charity as a material support for the immense work of the evangelization.

I echo the sentiment of our Holy Father, asking you to open your hearts as you connect with World Mission Sunday in every corner of the globe. As I write to you today, I ask you to consider a sacrificial gift to the annual for world missions. It will be collected on the weekend of October 19-20. Your generous support will help the Society for the Propagation of the Faith to continue to spread the good news to the growing faith communities of our day. May it generate within us a renewed awareness of the need to proclaim the gospel to all corners of the world. With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was

naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in. Mother Teresa OCTOBER IS WORLD MISSION MONTH On 30 November, 2019, the Catholic Church will celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the promulgation of the Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud, with which Pope Benedict XV sought to give new impetus to the missionary task of proclaiming the Gospel. As a response to this momentous anniversary, Pope Francis has called an Extraordinary Missionary Month, which will be celebrated around the world in October 2019. This Missionary Month has as its aim to foster an increased awareness of the missio ad gentes (mission to the people) and taking up again with renewed fervour the missionary transformation of the Church’s life and pastoral activity. Pope Francis has encouraged local churches to see the Missionary Month of October 2018 as a good preparation for this celebration “by enabling all the faithful to take to heart the proclamation of the Gospel and to help their communities grow in missionary and evangelising zeal.” Fr Brian Lucas, National Director of Catholic Mission says that this anniversary will be a new opportunity to invigorate the faithful with a sense of the missionary call that belongs to all Christians. “While it is only natural that we focus concern on local issues and our own needs, the Pope is reminding us that the Church is missionary by is very nature and we are called to share the good news with the wider world both in our words and through our ‘faith in action’”, he said. “This Extraordinary Mission Month will be a unique opportunity to renew our baptismal call to mission, a call that each of us have no matter what our state in life”, he said. Local activities will be planned through the National Office of Catholic Mission, with Diocesan celebrations to take place around the country. With thanks to Catholic Mission.
