PARISH BULLETIN BOARD

Sean G. Ogle

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear friends,

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of the vacation season. Although there a few more weeks of chronological summer, the rhythms and schedules of work, school and outdoor events change back to “work mode”. That doesn’t mean, however, we don’t need to relax and enjoy what free time there may be. I hope you can make time to enjoy this unique season of the year.

The idea of a “rest” is at the heart of our religious concept of the “Sabbath”. Jews saw the Sabbath as God’s gift to humanity, not so much to imitate His example of rest after work (presumably God doesn’t really need time off!), but rather to contemplate the work that has been done and to thank God for our capacity to do it in His service. Christians moved the Sabbath from the seventh day (Saturday) to the eighth day (Sunday) signifying both the memorial of the Resurrection, but also the new Sabbath that accompanies the new Creation in Christ. Sunday Sabbath as a religious idea has largely given way to the secular concept of the “weekend” to focus on our earthly needs. As disciples of Christ we need to make an extra effort intentionally to infuse our Sabbath activities with a sense of gratitude to the God who made us and will one day call us to our eternal rest in Him.

Preparing for Sunday Mass attendance can help us to live the Sabbath more intentionally. We invite you this weekend and next to sign up for the small Scripture Sharing groups that will resume the week of October 6. These groups are a great way both to prepare for Sunday Mass, to become more acquainted with Scripture and to get to know your fellow-parishioners. Please speak to the volunteers at the doors after Masses this weekend or next.

One aesthetic event of rest we can all enjoy in the coming months is another in our series of vocal and instrumental concerts that have become part of the fabric here. Musical artists such as the “Amuse” Singers, the Astoria Symphony and the San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir have presented their repertoire more than once to great response. Our rebuilt pipe organ opened up a new avenue of performance with the inaugural concert offered by maestro Jamie Hitel last spring. We are now proud to announce our second pipe organ concert, presented by virtuoso organist and Bach expert Anthony Newman on Sunday, October 8 at 3 PM in the upper church. Admission will be free and the performance will be of the highest caliber. Please join us, and tell your friends and neighbors as well.

Finally, allow me to thank the 27 people who were able

to donate blood here last weekend. I also thank coordinator

Winnie Burke, the Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus

and the other volunteers who helped with the event. With

everyone’s participation many lives will be saved.

God love you,

Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

PRAYER OF THE WEEK Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2:3)

Prayer for Labor Day On this weekend, when we rest from our usual labors, loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of human labor— in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living.

We thank you, Lord, for the gift and opportunity of work; may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of others and the glory of your name.

We lift up to you all who long for just employment and those who work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere.

May those of us who are now retired always remember that we still make a valuable contribution to our Church and our world by our prayers and deeds of charity.

May our working and our resting all give praise to you until the day we share together in eternal rest with all our departed in your Kingdom as you live and reign Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Submitted by Elaine Rodriguez Share your favorite prayers: [email protected]
