Hello,

Last week a grand jury report came out in Pennsylvania addressing priests

accused of abusing children and how those situations were handled by bishops in 6 dioceses over the past 70 years. My reactions, like those of many others I have talked to, range from anger, to sorrow, to shame, but I did notice one reaction that was also involved in 2002 that I and others no longer had, disbelief. Unfortunately, that is because we are already aware of similar actions that we might have doubted in the past but we now know are true. Fortunately, it means that we are listening to victims. Not blindly, but with respect and concern, and hopefully the desire to care for them, protect others, and to do all that is possible to prevent these sins, these crimes, from happening again.

There are numerous actions that we have done and, hopefully, we take this

as a reminder as to why we have to do them. “Protecting God’s Children” and other means of instructing all employees and volunteers about practices and actions that are acceptable and those that are not. Recognizing what can potentially lead to abuse and how to identify and confront it. This report can be an encouragement to not grow lax in our awareness and a reminder that we need to change our entire culture to prevent these actions in the future.

Priests and deacons, whenever they travel to another diocese for any ministry

are required to have their home diocese send the diocese and the parish they are going to a letter informing them that they are a priest or deacon in good standing. A check to be sure that a minister who may be visiting from another diocese does not have any allegations against them and also a reminder for their home diocese and the bishop that they have a responsibility for the actions of this priest or deacon. This change has taken older priests a while to get used to and even remember it is needed when they travel outside the diocese, but like seatbelts in a car, younger priests who have always known this practice just consider it normal. This report is again a sad reminder of why this practice is needed.

But there is also more that we need to do, and hopefully some of that anger

we are experiencing will help our resolve with this response. In holding authorities more accountable for their actions, in the past and present. In recognizing that no one is beyond question and having a means to hear and investigate any accusation. And also in considering what civil laws may be needed to help prevent and seek some form of justice for those who have been abused in any part of our society.

God has given us freedom, that we have seen some have abused, to sin in

horrible ways, and their actions can lead others to sin. May we use our freedom as God meant, to show love, to protect the innocent, and to help those most harmed by sin to realize God’s love for them.

Peace,

Fr. Nick

Your voice IS good and can grow even stronger. 4. If anyone told you your voice was not good, they were WRONG. 5. You DO have time...for prayer, friend-ship, and a loving environment. Not to mention that the bible tells us to sing over 60 TIMES!

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH ACTS RETREATS

St. Joseph Parish in Manchester is pleased to present an ACTS weekend retreat. This parish-based retreat offers the opportunity to renew your spirituality and prayer life, to strengthen your faith and its application in your daily life, and to build lasting friendships. It is presented by parishioners with spiritual direction from our parish priests.

Where is it? The LaSalle Retreat Center near Wildwood, MO. Located on 180 acres of beautiful, wood-ed grounds on Highway 109 near Interstate 44, LaSalle was originally built as a seminary for the Christian Brothers in 1886 and became a retreat center in the 1980s. LaSalle is a warm and welcoming place. It is truly "holy ground" where one can come to be close to God and experience a peace that they can take with them in their hearts.

The retreat begins on Thursday evening, September 13th with check-in at 6:15 PM at St. Jo-seph Church in Manchester, after which those attending the retreat will be transported to LaSalle. The retreat ends back in church with the 11:00 mass on Sunday morning. .

The cost of the weekend including 3 nights lodging, meals and transportation is $255. A $75 deposit is required when you register. The remainder is payable at the start of the Retreat on Thursday evening. Our Parish contact here at St. Joseph Clayton is Michele Maue at 314-243-2685

To register online go to https://stjoemanchester.org/acts-retreat. Or you can pick up a reg-istration form from Pat in the St. Joseph Clayton parish office.

Parish School of Religion Update

What a great summer break! I am so happy to be back getting ready for another Blessed year here at St. Joseph PSR. Over the summer we made some changes/improvements to the program and building. All classrooms have new air condi-tioning units. New textbooks have arrived and teachers are preparing to teach the faith in a new way. The confirmation program has been restructured and will hopefully better meet the spiritual needs of our candidates. This Sunday we are celebrating the up-coming PSR year with donuts and games in the Parish Hall after the 9:00 Mass, please feel free to join us. Please pray for us this year, that the one true Catholic faith may continue to grow in our beautiful parish of St. Joseph!

SPECIAL FOOD COLLECTION FOR IMMIGRANT STUDENTS

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is collecting food for students at the International Welcome School on South Grand Avenue. The school serves mostly immigrant students with limited English and low formal education, many who are war refugees struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Students receive accelerated English training, an introduction to the US culture and school system and exposure to educational expecta-tions and opportunities. This transitional school prepares students to move into a regular classroom environ-ment in the St. Louis Public Schools.

We are asking for the following items:

• Dried beans • Grains (such as rice) • Pasta • Vegetables

All foods must be in boxes or cans. No glass containers, please.

We will be collecting from September 1 through September 9th. The collected food will be taken to Opera-tion Food Search who will deliver it to the school. These students are accustomed to a different diet than the typical American diet requiring a special collection. Containers for the food will be in the vestibule. Thank you.

Questions, please call Marcia at 314-941-9735.
