Hailing from New Orleans, LA, the six-piece band Flow Tribe, will play The Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport, August 18, while touring throughout the U.S. and throwing the ultimate musical celebration every time they hit the stage.

“We wanted to write songs that capture every facet of our personality as a group” explains O’Rorke. “We don’t try to play one style of music and Alligator White reflects the diversity of our sound. The foundation is funk which is the second line culture of New Orleans. That’s where we live and it is our common ground. At the same time, Bryan brings in a Latin influence while the other guys are into soul, R&B, and rock. We focus on songwriting the most though, the songs have to pop.”

They certainly do. The song “Back n Forth” includes swaggering piano melodies

and robust guitar tones that lead into sweeping hooks. Meanwhile, Kango Slim of the lauded New Orleans rap outfit Partners-N-Crime delivers a sly verse, expanding the groove in the process.

Then, there’s the irresistible “Gimmie A Line,” which could ignite any party with its slippery rhythms and silky delivery.

Elsewhere on Alligator White, “Gon Gitcha” snaps into

an undeniably funky, physical groove, while the Latin-flavored “Ooh Yea” was tailor-made to sing along to in any tropical paradise. Both tunes showcase the band’s impressive instrumental chops as well as their musical diversity. Last but not least, the track “Won’t Be Long” emanates the same energy befitting the band’s trademark “backbone-cracking music,” while paying tribute to their roots in blues and Southern rock.

It’s been quite a wild ride for the band up until this point. As lifelong friends, the boys began formally playing together in 2004, using Penot’s backyard as a rehearsal studio. As they parted ways for college (with the exception of Olschner, who departed to serve in Iraq,) they kept in touch, never losing sight of the

musical chemistry they had collectively harnessed. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Flow Tribe regrouped to not only to help their city but to officially launch their band.

After playing alongside the likes of Galactic, Juvenile, Trombone Shorty and John Fogerty and performing at the prestigious New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival three times, Flow Tribe is now on tour ready to deliver outstanding performances for new and old fans. With band members K.C. O’Rorke (vocals, trumpet,) John-Michael Early (harmonica, vocals, keyboard, washboard,) Russell Olschner (drums,) Chad Penot (bass, vocals,) Bryan Santos (guitar) and Mario Palmisano (guitar) each bringing something different to the mix, it’s no wonder Relix Magazine commended Flow Tribe as “bizarrely irresistible,”

have been preparing for months for this opportunity to perform to parents, friends, and the Williamsport community.

The day will also include an exclusive, one time performance entitled, “1967: The Summer of Love.” The performance will feature some of the Uptown Music Collective’s most experienced performers doing classic songs from the year 1967. Artists will include Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Spencer Davis Group, The Doors and more. “We were looking for a summer themed performance for our main performance group to bring to the stage as a one night only event, said Dave Brumbaugh, Uptown Music Collective Executive Director. The students and I discussed a few ideas and someone suggested the Summer of Love, there was an instant excitement in the room. My students are really pumped to bring perform these songs to the stage. There is nothing like great music performed by passionate young people, you don’t want to miss this free show.”

The Uptown Music Collective Summer Music Festival has become a summer tradition in the city and each year is one of the most anticipated music events of the summer. Established in April of 2000, the Uptown Music Collective (a 501(c) 3 nonprofit school of music) has developed a reputation as the premier source of music education in the area. Offering private lessons at all levels on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, as well as classes and workshops in music theory, songwriting, and styles such as the Blues, Jazz, Classical and Rock. The primary age range of the Collective is 10 – 18 yrs old, but is open to all ages and levels. The program brings outstanding student run performances to the area, including most recently, With A Little

Help from My Friends: A Tribute to The Beatles. The Uptown Music Collective is committed to being a valuable musical presence in the community. The Collective prides itself on producing the well-rounded musician, and feels that the strong presence of current and former Collective students, teachers, and staff as frequent performers in Williamsport is evidence of the UMC’s effective and exciting curriculum.

The Uptown Music Collective Summer Music Festival is sponsored by K and S Music, Wegmans, Axeman-Anderson, and Penn St Apartments. Media sponsors are Lamar Advertising

in north central Pennsylvania. The event, dubbed the Bloomsburg Nationals powered by Carlisle Events, takes place annually during the 2nd weekend of August and highlights all makes, models, styles and eras of collector cars. Since its inception under the Carlisle Events family of shows, Bloomsburg has grown in every aspect possible. This includes a boom in attendance, a larger showfield of cars, more swap meet and car corral spaces sold, etc. Now, heading into its third year, Carlisle Events is proud to announce that PPG has been named as the official presenting sponsor of event weekend.

Bloomsburg Nationals weekend in 2014 takes place August 8-10 and is now officially known as the Bloomsburg Nationals Powered by Carlisle Events - Presented by PPG. The weekend includes live music, dancing, a movie screening of American Graffiti, special attractions and more. The family fun is highlighted by the cars themselves as part of the showfield. Cars are on display courtesy of local and regional enthusiasts and are also for sale by owner via the car corral. Further, parts and accessories can be found within the swap meet or as part of the rapidly expanding Manufacturers Midway. All told, PPG’s inclusion now allows for even more name brand recognition for guests who make Bloomsburg their mid-summer destination.

PPG is no stranger to Carlisle Events as it operates a plant in nearby Mt. Holly Springs. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based company is a global

supplier of aftermarket paints, coatings and more. Many of these products can be used on collector cars, around the home or within a garage. Founded in 1883, PPG originated as Pittsburgh Plate Glass but rebranded in 1968 as PPG Industries Inc. to further highlight its diverse offerings. It’s the diversity and name recognition between both Carlisle Events and PPG that make the partnership a perfect fit for all involved.

“PPG is an iconic brand in the car hobby that enjoys great loyalty among car enthusiasts. Even though we are now the largest coatings supplier in the world, our DNA is in the automotive finishes that people chose to put on their own personal hot rods. We appreciate that loyalty and are constantly pushing the envelope in color choice and technology. We are also a part of the fabric that makes up the Bloomsburg

community and are proud to be able to support such a great event that benefits our loyal customers and the Bloomsburg community in general. Bloomsburg is wonderful town, a great place to live and very supportive.” Todd Warren, PPG Industries, Inc.

Mike Kaminski, a local author currently living in Dalmatia, Pennsylvania, will begin his book signing tour of his latest book on August 14th at Bucknell Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg.

LIFE AFTER RUSSIAN ROULETTE: GAME OVER is a true story based on actual events primarily of his life, activities and investigations during the years he was a police officer and undercover detective working with drug groups and organized crime associations in the 1970’s. Baltimore, Maryland is the setting f o r most of the book. However, the story ends in Northumberland, Pennsylvania when Kaminski finally finds the one thing he had been searching for all his life – LOVE – in the life of his wife. But in the end, she would die, also, just like so many people he had known in his journey to find peace.

At first glance, you might think you know how police and undercover detectives work, but you could be dead wrong. Hidden within the plot of this story is a series of inner conflicts, moral and ethical dilemmas and choices that many people in law enforcement make and live with in the line of duty. And when you

choose to cross the line, when you justify that wrong is right – you walk a very dangerous path in life. Then you must deal with the consequences of your actions and wrestle with your conscience. This book is a very psychological account of Mike Kaminski’s life as he struggled with suicide, addiction and spirituality as he lived with the actions of uniform patrol in Baltimore City and life-threatening investigations undercover in drug groups and organized crime associations followed by

several years as a private investigator for defense attorneys. Eventually, he would run from that violent life and world and enter a seminary to receive ordination. However, the ghosts of his past would continue to haunt him as he continued to hide in addiction and hope for suicide.

Join us for the presentation and book signing event at:Bucknell Barnes and Noble400 Market StreetLewisburg, Pa.On Thursday, August 14th at 6:30 pm.A signed copy of the book will be given as one of the doorprizes.

Courtyard Theater Ranges from “G” to “PG-17” Rated Events: The Courtyard Theater, located just outside J.C. Penney at the Susquehanna Mall, will present productions and concerts which will be rated from those fit for the entire family to those which parents may not want to bring younger children to. A few opening still remain. Then, on August 1st, the theater offers to more mature audiences, the Burlesque extravaganza, “Madame Burlesque”, presented by the famous Boston Babydolls. This one night event, scheduled for 8:00 PM, is a tribute to the ladies of the famous art form of the 1920s thru 1940s when burlesque

offered sexy ladies and hilarious comedy. Dozens of famous comedians got their start in burlesque houses and the glamorous girls became as famous as movie stars. Names like: Blaze Starr, Zorita, Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose Lee were well known to the general public. The Boston Babydolls show is touring the US and the Courtyard Theater was happy to be able to give audiences from the Susquehanna Valley a chance to see them LIVE. Finally, after two more plays: “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “Radio Razzle Dazzle” in August and September, the Courtyard Theater will present the live version of the cult favorite musical, “The Rocky Horror Show” which, although rated “PG”, is well known to have audience participation which causes the warning to potential audience members who have never seen either the play or movie to expect shocking language from the viewers. We raise over 400 red deer on our farm near Bloomsburg, Pa. During summer months and early fall, hayride tours guide visitors through over two hundred acres of rolling landscape to hand-feed the deer and snap pictures. Itʼs our goal to make your tour fun, hands-on and educational.

Our most popular attraction, tours are held on the hour during scheduled times. Apple and oat treats are sold in 1 lb buckets for only $1 in our gift shop. The deer are eager to be fed by hand and come running to the wagon to get their yummy treats.

Our farm-raised red deer venison is for sale year-round in our shop.

Our venison is naturally raised with no antibiotics or growth hormones. High in protein and iron but low in fat and cholesterol, itʼs a perfect choice in societyʼs recent strive for healthy living. Red deer venison is also high in vitamins B6 and B12.

animals in a natural setting without the use of chemical inputs. Things are always changing on a farm, but come meet the usual cast of characters including 100-300 sheep and lambs. In spring, the lambs are newborn and near the barn. In summer, they are on pasture and you can see the border collie working. Our pastured pigs don’t have to be raised in concrete pens in smelly buildings. See how playful and content our Tamworth pigs are in the fields and woods. Chickens: no confinement buildings with big fans here. Our meat birds start as chicks in a warm brooder, then move outside to green grass. Honeybees: our hives are managed with natural chemical-free methods. Taste their delicious honey! Horses and cattle: our horses are used for riding and driving, and always enjoy a visit and a friendly scratch. Sharing the pasture are the beef cows. www.owensfarm.com Sunbury

Butterflies Through October 31, 2014: Experience hundreds of butterflies in flight as you walk through our native butterfly greenhouse. Almost everyone appreciates the beauty of butterflies, but how much do you really know about them? Did you know that butterflies can’t hear? Like snakes, they sense vibrations through the surfaces they touch. Did you know butterflies are found everywhere but Antarctica; they taste with their feet; and some, like the Monarch, can migrate up to 2,000 miles? Visit us April 19 through October 31, 2014 to experience these delicate beauties in flight. Want a closer look at these beautiful insects? We now offer the chance to feed them! Ask our staff in the butterfly greenhouse for details! Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland Allenwood, PA Phone: 570-538-1869

Sugar

& What You Eat

The grim reality of the American diet

The American Heart Association says that a person consuming 2,200 calories a day should take in no more than 36 grams of added sugar a day, and for women and children it should be a little less. That’s nine teaspoons a day, a huge number! But only 30% of what the average American adult is currently eating. Figuring that up, we’re looking at the average American eating 30 teaspoons/10 tablespoons or nearly 1 cup of sugar per day.

It’s no wonder we’re facing a diabetes epidemic. The average person eats between 300g and 400g of sugars every

single dayHow do we change this? A healthy person eat less than 100g of car-

bohydrates per day. Put the time and effort into breakfast. It takes a few minute of time

the evening before to cut up vegetables, and then a few minutes more to cook everything. A hot breakfast is better for the metabolism and pro-motes weight loss. It also starts the day off with an easy to digest mix that feeds the body, not the yeasts and bacteria that love sugar in our guts.

With a fuller lunch and dinner, we don’t feel the need for snacks. Our bodies know we have enough and we just aren’t hungry.

Using leftovers means we have a homemade, easy, and delicious lunch every day. It’s far cheaper and healthier to take leftovers rather than buying something or using a prepackaged meal.

And does this dinner mean more work? A little, but it is far worth it. Focus on making the vegetables the stars and the meats and starches the sides. A rich stir fry is perfect example of this.

Here’s why we do this: When our bodies’ work hard to process sugars, it wears out quicker. Reducing the sugars coming in means our pancreas doesn’t work as hard. Our energy gets put to good use. We preserve our health for as long as possible, reduce toxins coming in, and save money because we are no long seeing the doctor as often or spending money on foods with no value.
