The Packwood House

Museum is in need of more donations for its annual Attic Tag Sale, which will be held Feb-ruary 25 – March 8, 2014. The sale, held in the Museum’s Tour Cen-ter, is one of the museum’s

most popular and success-ful fund-raisers. All pro-ceeds benefit Packwood House Museum. Items that can be sold include books, jewelry, glass, chi-na, kitchenware, furniture, toys, lamps, postcards,

sporting equipment, craft items, holiday decorations – anything except for tele-visions, computers, and clothing, although the Mu-seum does accept vintage accessories. Electron-ics and appliances will

be accepted but must be in working order. Please pass the word along to anyone who is moving – we can take many of the items you decide not to take with you. All dona-tions are tax-deductible.

Through February 10, the museum will be closed for winter break, but appoint-ments to drop off items can be made by calling (570) 524-0323. After this time, items can be dropped of anytime during their

W ith love in the air, the ro-mance comes

out in full force. And so does the chocolate. If

there was anything that would side track a dieter, it’s chocolate.

But why give the one you love something

that will add fat, in-crease heart disease risks and increase dental problems?

Show love not with a

quantity of cheap milk chocolate, but with quality dark chocolate. And toss in a bottle of dark red wine, too!

Dark chocolate is actually healthy for us! The higher cocoa con-tent is packed with nu-trients and flavonoids. Being low in sugar, it reduces the risk of tooth problems, dia-betes and heart dis-ease. The wide range of tastes in each bite encourage the body to feel satisfied and, thus, we eat less.

When dieters in-clude dark chocolate in their weight loss programs, they are more likely to keep their goals and not overeat. I’ve used this extensively in my programs to help my clients, especially women, keep their goals and still indulge in chocolate.

It needs to be eat-en in a smart way. One ounce of dark chocolate is a healthy amount. It’s actually more than you would expect. It’s about a 2”x2” square or sev-eral bites worth.

If you are really cre-ative, and really want to impress the women in your lives, try this easy recipe:

Melt 8oz of 75% dark chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler

Stir in 6oz of plain, slivered almonds

Spread on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 30 minutes

Package pretty as a gift.

**You can also add sprigs of mint or slices

of dried fruit on top be-fore cooling to make it prettier and healthier

Now that is a thought-ful gift. You can make it even more special by presenting it on a plate with a glass of red wine. Yes, Valentine’s Day can be this simple and thoughtful.

You will be paying much attention to her heart with the glass of red wine. Studies show 3-4oz of red wine every day can lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL choles-terol. It can reduce the risk of diabetes and help curb night time snacking. Dieters who add this small amount of red wine every night lose an average of 3-4 pounds a month more than those who com-pletely abstain.

On Friday, Feb-ruary 7 many of us in the

healthcare industry celebrated National Wear Red Day. It is observed the first Fri-day in February. Many of us think of heart disease as a “man’s disease” however a woman suffers a heart attack about every 90 seconds in the United States. Wear Red day is just for this rea-son. It is used to pro-mote awareness for the community and women alike that heart disease is the leading killer of women in the United States. Women of all ages and back-grounds can get heart disease. It does not discriminate.

National Wear Red Day began ten years ago and despite the needed increase in awareness over the last decade, only 56 percent of women rec-ognize that heart dis-ease is their number one killer. While many women experience no symptoms of heart dis-ease at all, others may feel a heavy to sharp chest pain or discom-fort. Pan in the neck/jaw/throat or even pain in the back. These symptoms may occur

during a physical activ-ity or even while relax-ing. Heart disease is even referred to as a “silent” killer and may often go undiagnosed until a women has a symptom of a heart at-tack, heart failure, an abnormal heart beat or even a stroke.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and cho-lesterol and heredity are all risk factors for heart disease. Smok-ing, poor diet, obesity, excess alcohol and be-ing physically inactive are also risk factors for heart disease however these can be avoid-able.

Be proactive in your approach of heart disease. Keep track of your risk factors. Schedule regular and annual exams and keep your appoint-ments. Talk with fam-ily members regard-ing their help history. There maybe factors that could increase your risk for heart disease and you may not even be aware of them.

Make health choices everyday. We all know that this can be tough, especially for women. We all are pulled in each and every direc-tion however we need

to stop at times and take care of ourselves. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and low-fat meat or fish. Snack healthy. Main-tain a healthy weight. Exercise regularly by playing with the kids at the playground, walk-ing your dog or danc-ing around your home while cleaning. Do not smoke. If you do smoke, quit. Limit your use of alcoholic bever-ages. Manage all your medical conditions. Even if you do have high cholesterol, dia-betes and high blood pressure, by keeping them under control and understanding them you can cut your risk factors in half.
