VALLEY GIFT GUIDE

Amidst the gifts, meals and parties of the holiday season, one word takes pre-cedence -- family. There’s no better time to begin learning about family roots, especially as you’re gathered together in celebration. And doing so is easier than ever.

While researching family history or exploring ethnic roots was once a task-heavy chore, filled with hours of library visits, interviews or public records inquiries, now you can con-

veniently traverse the genealogical landscape thanks to new technology tools, such as mobile apps, social media and even affordable Ancestral DNA tests that enable you to find family stories you may not have known about.

Liven up the holidays and connect with those who mean the most by sitting down and chatting about family history. Here are some pointers to get started:

• Start with what you know: Using a website like Ancestry.com, or the Ancestry app (available on iOS and Android), enter the information you know into your family tree. Upload photos to preserve memories. Don’t have all the facts? Don’t worry. This is just the start of your quest.

• Take a DNA test: DNA isn’t just for TV shows and professional detectives. You now can be your own detective. Get your ethnic breakdown by percentage, such as 50 per-cent Irish and 50 percent Native American, and find out who else may be related to you with tools such as AncestryDNA. On average, folks taking the test have 60 matches to 4th -- or closer -- cousins in their results.

• Chat with relatives at family gatherings: Over the holidays, dive into your family his-tory with relatives. Consider gifting them family history resources like a DNA test. Record any interviews, particularly with the elderly, and take detailed notes. Ask everyone to bring photo albums and heirlooms. Any documents you create or collect you can attach to your online family tree for preservation.

• Look at the ancestry hints in your family tree: Ancestry provides hints about possible relatives to populate your family tree. These clues could give valuable insight into your family’s legacy and connect you with lost relatives.

• Share your findings: Whether it’s at the next family reunion, or as a belated holiday gift wrapped and framed, share your findings with your family for a better understanding of your collective heritage. Plenty of websites offer printing services, so consider the perfect stocking stuffer: a calendar, book, poster or other gift that will bring more meaning to the holidays. Encourage family to try the app and fill in their own family tree.

Climate control accounts for almost half the energy use in a typical U.S. home and is also the largest energy expense for most people -- but it doesn’t have to be. With a few simple solutions, you can

be friendlier toward your wallet and the environment this winter.Weather-Proof Your HomeCracks, gaps and joints can cause drafts that will undermine your heat-

ing efforts and send your utility bill through the roof. Caulking, insulating and weatherstripping can help curtail the waste so you can enjoy a warmer, more comfortable winter.

Older homes may lack sufficient insulation. Based on where you live and how you currently heat your home, a contractor can help you determine wheth-er your attic, floors and walls need more insulation.

Investigate Heating AlternativesMore than one million U.S. homes are currently heated with pellets, and it’s

no wonder why -- pellet stoves eliminate 75 percent of the carbon emissions associated with fossil fuel heating. That’s roughly three times the impact of driving a hybrid car and saves consumers $400 to $1,500 or more each year, according to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. Plus, some state and local municipalities even offer a tax credit for heating all or part of a home with biomass fuels.

Additionally, because pellets are made from renewable resources like re-sidual forest waste and agricultural byproducts, they absorb nearly as much carbon growing as they give off when burned, making them carbon neutral,

according to the Pellet Fuels Institute.

To maximize cost sav-ings, look for a high ef-ficiency, free-standing pellet stove, like the XXV from Harman Stoves. This stylish pellet stove delivers controlled heat thanks to its distinct cast iron details and advanced room-sens-ing technology, which automatically adjusts heat output to maintain a consistent room tem-perature.

You can also cut costs by replacing a drafty, masonry-built fireplace with an insert, like the Harman Accentra 52i which offers powerful and consistent heat with low maintenance and fuel-saving technology.

where heat is lost from your body. While wearing gloves indoors is impracti-cal, you should definitely cover up your feet. Invest in a good pair of slippers and some warm socks to keep your feet and the rest of you warm. By dressing warmer indoors, you will be able to keep the overall central heat temperature down, resulting in real cost-savings.

New WindowsHeat loss through windows can account for a whopping 10 to 25 percent

of your heating bill, according to the Department of Energy. If you have older, single pane windows, it may be time for an upgrade. Look for double-pane windows that are ENERGY STAR qualified. It’s a one-time expense with a true return on investment.

You don’t need to feel chilly or uncomfortable in order to lower your energy bills. Take steps to improve your home’s energy efficiency.

When thinking about home u p d a t e s , our atten-

tion so often turns to a fresh coat of paint or new décor, but some of the

most practical, meaningful changes you can make to your home will truly mod-ernize the way you live.

Here are a few key tech updates to fully bring your home into the 21st century.

Modernize Your LandlineAs our mobile phones’

functionality expands with each generation, don’t leave your home phone in the dark ages. You can now link your mobile phone calls to your home phone. For example, with a Panasonic Link2Cell handset, you can link up to two smartphones to make and receive calls, as well as receive talking ID alerts so you never miss a text. You don’t even need a separate landline to use these features.

Other technology high-lights include Enhanced Noise Reduction that al-lows you to suppress back-ground noise around call-ers while simultaneously enhancing their voices, and a powerful battery back-up system that keeps you connected when the power goes out. More in-formation can be found at www.Panasonic.com.

Home TheaterBring the theater experi-

ence home by giving your

living room or den a tech makeover. A smart home theater system will sync with your devices so you can enjoy music wirelessly or access an external or network drive for media content. Don’t forget the surround sound, as well as a lighting scheme that optimizes your audiovisual experience.Programmable Thermostat

Going green and being comfortable can now go hand in hand. Improve your home’s energy efficiency and well-being at the same time by investing in a pro-grammable thermostat. Look for a user-friendly, intuitive thermostat that automati-cally turns itself down when you are not home and that can also be programmed re-motely from a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Even if you have all the latest mobile gadgets, there’s no guarantee your home life matches your techy on-the-go lifestyle. Take steps to bring your home up to speed.

Cool temperatures, low humidity, and furnace-blasted dry air can leave

your skin dry, flaky, and itchy. Ev-eryone needs to protect his or her skin from drying out in winter, but if you have certain skin conditions, you should step up your routine to keep your skin healthy.

“Winter itch is a common name for the skin symptom of general-ized itching in winter. While most commonly seen in the elderly and those with a history of asthma, al-lergies and eczema, anyone can experience winter itch,” says Dr. Vishakha Gigler, a board certified dermatologist.

With that in mind, here are a few steps everyone can take to pre-vent and relieve dry itchy skin in wintry weather:

• Avoid irritants. Try to avoid products that can irritate your skin,

such as fragrance, dryer sheets, and fabric softeners. Use a hypoallergenic laundry de-tergent and wear soft fabrics such as cotton.

• Add humidity to your home and office. Por-table humidifiers or those that work with your heating system put moisture into the air that will be absorbed naturally by your skin and hair.

• Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen may make you think of the beach, but it’s important in win-ter, too. Apply a moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to exposed ar-eas to protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays before heading outdoors. Look for sunscreens with hyaluronic acid in them.

• Moisturize after showering. The most important thing with regards to

bathing is your follow-up routine. Pat your skin dry with a towel and then apply a thick moistur-izer. Apply in the morning and at night.

• Alleviate winter itch: To alleviate itch safely and effectively, toss a topical treatment into your bag for the day. A topical non steroid-based treatment providing fast itch relief is

best, and will help you avoid side effects like skin thin-ning, stretch marks, increased bruising and enlarged blood vessels. For example, TriCalm is a steroid free, fast acting itch relief gel that is five times more effective than steroid-based hydrocortisone 1% at reducing itch. More information can be found at www.tricalm.com.

• Protect against windburn. When heading outside on cold days, avoid windburn and prolonged exposure by wearing a hat, scarf, and gloves.

• Eat right. Stock up on foods with lots of healthy mono-unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, olive oil, flax, sardines, and avocados. These foods promote good skin health.

• Hand care. The skin on your hands is thinner than most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.

This winter, avoid and relieve dry skin. With the proper skin care regimen, you will keep your skin smooth, healthy and itch-free.

Gift IdeasWhether it’s the

holidays or any occasion you

want to be special, a gift that features a friend’s or family member’s favorite automotive item can be a great way to show you care—and know—about the person. For example, you can put car fanciers on the road to happiness with items such as these from Fiat Chrysler Auto-mobiles’ Mopar brand:

Each print comes with a letter of authentici-ty signed by “the father of the Hemi,” Tom Hoover, and Mopar President and CEO Pietro Gorlier.

• Holiday Orna-ments. The custom-made 426 Hemi engine ornament and spark plug ornaments are each made of mouth-blown glass and hand-painted.

You may have heard of “sum-mer slide” – when those summer months cause kids to lose all that

glorious information and knowledge they acquired during the school year. But even shorter breaks can cause education rifts for students, too.

Not to worry. You can help dampen this effect by making sure kids use their brains over the holidays. The only requirement: make it fun.

Here are a few ideas to keep your chil-dren’s brains busy during holiday breaks:

Study BuddiesWhether your children pair up with just

one friend or an entire crowd, consider making studying a social event. Add some festivity to the affair by serving snacks and desserts. Around the holidays, you might even include a themed gift exchange for added appeal.

If you are in between semesters, there may not be any official studying to do, but kids can keep their minds moving with supplemental learning. For example, if your child studied “As I Lay Dying” in school, make a movie night of it. Pop some popcorn and invite his or her friends over to watch the film version of the novel.

Fun Learning ToolsConsider online learning tools that use

creative techniques to engage students. For example, Shmoop, an online curriculum and test prep provider, offers original con-tent that is fun without being cheesy. For example, the site has a “Pride and Preju-dice” course which asks students to create OkCupid profiles for Lizzy, Jane, and Lydia Bennet.

“Even if it’s not 100 percent related to what your child is studying, fun tools and content can spark new interests,” says Da-

vid Siminoff, founder and chief creative officer of Shmoop.

For example, the site’s “Shakespearean Transla-tor” translates anything students type into “super authentic Shakespearean English,” turning even re-sistant readers into Shake-speare aficionados. Addi-tionally, the site has online courses on subjects that will definitely keep kids’ brains stimulated without feeling like a snoozefest. For ex-ample, short courses like “Breaking Bad as Litera-ture,” “The World According to Dr. Seuss,” and “Bruce Springsteen`s America,” can make holiday learning a treat.

Educational VideosIt’s no surprise that kids

love television and mov-

ies. So why not mimic the experience with educa-tional videos? Whether it’s a historical documentary or a math-oriented instruc-tional video, the audiovisual format is a great vessel for many learners – especially those on vacation.

IncentivizeFor students who need

motivation beyond the pursuit of knowledge or the satisfaction of bet-ter grades, consider a re-wards system. Offering prizes for books read or

lessons completed could be just the encouragement needed to get kids focused on academics over the holidays. Shmoop’s “Math Shack” takes this concept to heart, awarding badges and “Shmoints,” a virtual currency. No matter what your child is learning, a bit of material incentive can prove useful when helping kids set and achieve goals. Cookies can’t hurt, either.

More information can be found at www.Shmoop.com.

Hello! I am Michelle Shearer, Chairperson of the SUN Area Dairy Princess and Promotion Committee. This committee is made up of a small group of volunteers concerned about the future of the dairy industry in Snyder, Union,

Northumberland, and Montour Counties as well as in the state of Pennsylvania. Our purpose is to educate consumers about the need for milk and dairy products in their daily diets. We are currently without a dairy princess, so various committee members are writing these monthly articles.During this holiday season, I like to take time to spend with my family. I have been very fortunate to have been able to have my grandmothers in my life for the last forty years. These women have taught me a lot about life and cooking. Each one of them gave me one of their favorite recipe years ago which they and I make this time of year. Everything is better with dairy and these recipes use various dairy products.

Gram Steimling’s Cut-Out Sugar CookiesBy Jewel Steimling

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened 1 cup sour cream1 tsp baking soda1 tsp vanilla ½ cup vegetable shortening2 cups sugar6 cups flour

Mix all ingredients together (you may a little milk to help mix). Chill overnight. Roll out and cut into shapes. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes.

Gram Dugan’s Scalloped CabbageBy Ruth Dugan

1 head cabbage2 cups milk 2 Tbsp butter1 ½ Tbsp flour 8oz block Extra SharpCheese ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper

Cut cabbage in bite size pieces. Parboil in lightly salted water (about 10 minutes). Drain well. Make a medium white sauce by combining the butter, flour, salt, pepper and milk in a sauce pan and boiling one minute, being careful not to burn. In a casserole dish, layer cabbage, sauce and then chunked sharp cheese until all ingredients are gone. On top, dot with butter and bread crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Remember to get your 3 dairy products every day and use butter in all your holiday recipes. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy your family this holiday season!
