Whilst the vuvuzela was the inescapable sound of the summer, thanks to the World Cup in South Africa, Autumn at Turner Sims brings a plethora of instruments to charm and enchant. The voice is the most natural instrument of all, of course, and we celebrate this in a variety of ways. Bach’s joyous Christmas Oratorio is delivered by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. At the other end of the spectrum is the solo voice: Sally Matthews, with a programme including some of Canteloube’s evocative Chants d’Auvergne; Natacha Atlas’s captivating fusion of Western and Arabic, and new fado sensation Ana Moura all feature. Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy, two artists inextricably linked with traditional music of England, bring their new programme to us in October.

Celebrations of a different type are evident elsewhere in the season. Legendary American composer Terry Riley is 75 this year and jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler is 80. Both visit in the Autumn. There are anniversaries to celebrate too. The centenary of Django Reinhardt’s birth has inspired guitarist Martin Taylor to reform his Spirit of Django group. And whilst Reinhardt has been rather a slow burn in terms of profile Chopin has been omnipresent throughout this 200th anniversary year. Louis Lortie is one of his great interpreters and I’m delighted that we are able to bring this insightful artist to Turner Sims to present a pianistic Everest: the composer’s Etudes complete in one evening.

For an exhilarating sound experience don’t miss the Master Drummers of Africa. And if you prefer noise kept to a minimum head to our silent film event – Chaplin, Keaton et al – as part of Southampton Film Week. All in all, a season to shout about, whether your preferred decibel level is the quiet and reflective or the full-on and rousing.

Our orchestral series brings some of the country’s leading groups to Turner Sims.

Bach is our focus for the Autumn with two iconic works to enjoy: the Brandenburg Concertos in a special day of events for BBC Radio 3 with the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Christmas Oratorio, conducted by one of the great Bach interpreters, John Butt. 2011 sees Mark Padmore complete his Britten orchestral song cycle with the composer’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, whilst Russian virtuoso Nikolai Demidenko offers Mozart youthful piano concerto in a programme with the European Union Chamber Orchestra.

PIANO SERIESSix outstanding recitals in the intimate surroundings of Turner Sims make up this year’s Piano Series.

To open we present a pianist’s Everest, Chopin’s Etudes complete in one evening performed by one of their legendary interpreters, Louis Lortie. Jonathan Biss makes his Turner Sims debut with another momentous challenge, Beethoven’s Appassionata sonata. Charles Owen combines Bach with French repertoire, whilst Imogen Cooper’s programme includes Brahms’ birthday gift to Clara Schumann. Last but not least, February marks the beginning of a major Schubert retrospective from Paul Lewis which will run until 2012.

GLOBAL VOYAGESOur journey through traditional music this season takes in many fascinating destinations, from the ten countries which make up the membership of the Master Drummers of Africa, to the range of Scottish highlands and islands from which the members of Blazin’ Fiddles are drawn. JAZZ @ TURNER SIMSCelebrations abound in the jazz series and none more so than for Kenny Wheeler, whose 80th birthday is celebrated with a special concert. Elsewhere Martin Taylor marks Django Reinhardt’s centenary whilst Courtney Pine pays homage to Sidney Bechet, and Art Blakey is remembered by pianist Ray d’Inverno. Three leading American names – Napoleon Maddox, Robert Glasper and Christian Scott – bring their contemporary sounds to the series, whilst Denys Baptiste presents music from his eagerly awaited new album. Poetry and music combine for our season opener in the form of William Walton’s brilliant entertainment Façade. Setting to music Edith Sitwell’s satirical verses, Walton created a hugely popular work which celebrates the smart sophistication of 1920’s society. In tonight’s performance renowned comedy duo Kit and the Widow bring Sitwell’s poems to life with their inimitable energy and humour. The evening opens with music by Constant Lambert, a close friend of Walton’s and a regular Façade reciter. His concerto, tonight performed by one of its leading exponents, is dominated by jazz rhythms and harmonies.

O Duo’s repertoire spans more than 300 years and is a mix of popular classics and accessible contemporary music played on two marimbas, vibraphone and a huge array of percussion. To mark the 100th Anniversary of the birth of one of the founders of European jazz, Django Reinhardt, world-class jazz guitarist Martin Taylor has reformed his award winning group Spirit of Django, which he created in 1994 to re-explore his own Gypsy roots. Tonight’s concert showcases music from the group’s new album Last Train to Hauteville which The Observer critic hailed as the jazz hit of the summer.

The Takács Quartet are recognised as one of the world’s great string quartets, their performances described by The Guardian as chamber-music playing of overwhelming intensity, insight and intelligence. The concert opens with an exuberant piece by Haydn, the ‘father’ of the string quartet. Shostakovich’s Second Quartet was written in 1944 and reflects the composer’s wartime experiences. In contrast, Mendelssohn’s sunny Second Quartet, written when the composer was only 18, shows a youthful sense of optimism.

Sought after by the likes of Prince, Mos Def, Scroobius Pip and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, and with celebrity fans like George Clooney and Megan Fox, Christian Scott is one of the hottest jazz musicians around at the moment.

With echoes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, Christian’s dynamic composing and timeless trumpet sound flourishes with jazz, indie rock, neo-soul and hip-hop sensibilities.

Beethoven’s light-hearted Septet is the main work in tonight’s concert, the first of two visits to Turner Sims this season by members of the LMP. The work proved highly popular during Beethoven’s lifetime much to the composer’s disgust who felt that it overshadowed some of his more serious offerings. Nielsen’s work, written in 1914, takes the Septet’s instrumentation as a starting point and was described by the composer as a humorous trifle. Strauss’ work is most familiar in its orchestral guise but this chamber version captures the spirit of the larger work in just eight minutes.

A truly unique and utterly fascinating audio-visual theatrical experience as Finn Peters brings us Music Of The Mind, a project that uses state-of-the-art technology to translate a musician’s brainwaves directly into music – meaning you can actually hear what they’re thinking! With film specifically created for the project courtesy of VJ Yeast, this is music that falls somewhere between Kraftwerk and Sun Ra, with a compositional approach straight out of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and reminiscent of 60’s sci-fi funk and exotica.

At twenty-nine, American pianist Jonathan Biss has already proved himself an exceptional musician with a flourishing international reputation through both his concert performances and his award-winning recordings for EMI. His Turner Sims recital opens with Janácek’s autobiographical work and closes with Schumann’s intensely personal work, the first movement of which is a lament for being separated from his future wife Clara. Beethoven’s monumental sonata, pitting man against nature, is one of the composer’s most fiery works, demanding of both performer and instrument.

Multi award winning saxophonist, Courtney Pine, has done more for the profile of modern British jazz than almost any other figure. Some 24 years since his 1986 debut album made the British Top 40, he remains at the forefront of the UK jazz scene, continually pushing at boundaries and reinterpreting the tradition. For his latest project the original Jazz Warrior has assembled a heavyweight musical line-up drawing infl uences from Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Europe for an exuberant homage to the fi rst great saxophone star Sidney Bechet. The resulting album and live shows have earned him some of the highest critical acclaim of his long and varied career.

A unique evening featuring two major names in the contemporary music fi eld. Rolf Hind has earned an enviable reputation as one of today’s foremost interpreters of new music with many works written specially for him. Michael Finnissy is one of Britain’s most prominent and prolifi c composers. A piano virtuoso himself, a quarter of his 300 or so works are written for this instrument.

Rejoice! Exhault! So begins Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, giving an instant fl avour of this joyfully exuberant piece, which is actually a collection of cantatas written for the period between Christmas Day and Epiphany. On their fi rst visit to Turner Sims, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment are conducted by one of the world’s foremost Bach scholars and musicologists in four of the six cantatas. A wonderfully uplifting way to mark the festive season.

A festive treat as The Mellstock Band bring carols and revels from farmstead, manor, alehouse and street, with tales and poems by Thomas Hardy, William Barnes, John Clare, Charles Dickens and others. Drummer Art Blakey’s band Jazz Messengers is one of the best known and most popular modern jazz groups of all time. Tonight Ray d’Inverno’s acclaimed Jazz Messengers Tribute Band, with special guest trombone star Mark Nightingale, pay homage to the great drummer and his musical heritage. The double bill opens with Ray’s exciting new piano trio featuring the emerging talents of bassist Ben Taylor and drummer Lee Miller.



One of the country’s outstanding young quartets make their fi rst visit to Turner Sims with a programme which includes Dvorák’s masterpiece. Written whilst the Bohemian-born composer was living in America he described the work as a ‘musical postcard’ to his native land. Beethoven’s pioneering work is one of a set of three commissioned by one of the composer’s most generous patrons.

And who better than members of the LMP to mark Mozart’s birthdate, the composer with whom they are synonymous? This evening’s programme marks the occasion in style with two of Mozart’s greatest works, the wind serenades K375 and K388.

To coincide with the release of his much anticipated new album Identity by Subtraction saxophonist Denys Baptiste presents his most progressive set to date. Returning to a classic quartet format the music combines the many cultural impressions and expressions of Europe, North America and the Caribbean that have come to define Baptiste as an artist. At the same time his music remains entirely accessible with melodic free-flowing, contemporary compositions.

Payment and reservationsCredit/debit cards we accept all major cards except American Express. There is a £1 fee for both credit and debit card transactions.

Cheques should be made payable to Turner Sims.

Reserved tickets should be paid for within 4 working days of your reservation or 1 hour before the performance, whichever is sooner. After this time, unpaid reservations will be released for sale.

Please include 50p in your payment or a stamped, addressed envelope if you would like your tickets posted to you. Otherwise your tickets can be collected from the box office during opening hours.

Exchanges and refundsWe can only offer exchanges and refunds on Turner Sims promoted events and we must be in receipt of your original tickets.

Tickets returned at least 24 hours before the performance (4 days for group bookings) may be exchanged for a different Turner Sims promoted event, or a credit voucher. Tickets received fewer than 24 hours before the performance may only be resold if the event is sold out. These services are subject to a £2 administration fee.

Tickets can only be refunded in the event that the performance is cancelled.

Postage and card fees are non-refundable.

ConcessionsDiscounts are available for over 60s, registered unemployed, registered disabled, Smartcities card holders, children and students in full-time education and University of Southampton staff.

Proof of eligibility may be required.

Concessions apply where shown in the brochure. Only one discount may be applied per ticket. Turner Sims reserves the right to introduce concessions and special offers at any time. Discounts cannot be applied retrospectively.

Standby ticketsUnsold tickets for Turner Sims promoted events are available to children and students in full-time education, registered unemployed and registered disabled at £6 from an hour before the performance.

Availability of standby tickets is at the discretion of Turner Sims management. Proof of eligibility will be required.

Group bookingsBuy 10 tickets and receive the 11th ticket free. Tickets must be bought in one transaction and paid for at least one week prior to the event.

Bringing your school or college to Turner SimsTurner Sims offer discounted tickets for school and college groups, as well as advance information on the artists, programmes, workshops and pre-concert talks.
