SKAMPA QUARTET

Alfred Brendel retired from the concert platform in2008. Now he returns as a speaker, discussing the ideasand inspiration that, for nearly fifty years, have madehim one of the world’s leading pianists. There will be a chance to savour the old Brendel magic when heillustrates his thoughts at the piano.

Alfred Brendel writes:Can absolute music, without the assistance of words, movement, or the stage be funny? Somephilosophers and even musicians have denied this. In this lecture I try to demonstrate that humour, witand irony are indeed crucial elements of certainworks of great music, particularly by Haydn andBeethoven, and that proof can be found in thecompositions themselves.
