Tufts University Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center

Tufts University, located in Medford, Massachusetts, wrestled for 10 years with how to cost effectively site and design new athletic programming within the confines of their existing athletic complex. The disparate architecture, age, and condition of the surrounding buildings only heightened the challenge of designing a facility that met both this prestigious University’s architectural standards and budget.

We developed a concept that created a new face for Tufts Athletics through a signature, street level pedestrian entrance linking their entire athletic program, and the layout was positioned to seamlessly incorporate future phases of their athletic facility master plan, which includes a 50-meter aquatic center. Our team implemented sustainable features throughout the facility, including demand ventilation, optimization controls for mechanical systems, high performance glazing and water conserving fixtures and Tufts University saved millions of dollars compared to previous designs. The Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center opened in the summer of 2012, on time and on budget.
