• In April 1775, the Revolutionary War began. This was also known as the “War of Independence.” The thirteen colonies fought for and won their independence from Great Britain. How do you think our lives today may be different if we hadn’t won this war? What are some other events in history that make us who we are today?

• In April 1990, the Hubble Telescope was launched. The Hubble has provided us with never before seen photos of deep space. Do you think it’s beneficial to study our universe, as well as other universes? Do you think we may someday discover life on another planet? Explain what it may be like.

• Dogs are America’s most popular pet. Why do you think so many people in America own dogs? If you have a pet, what do you enjoy most about them? If you don’t have a dog, would you like to own a pet? Why or why not?


• On May 20, 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off in the airplane called the “Spirit of St. Louis” and became the first to fly the Atlantic Ocean alone. In order to achieve this historic flight, Lindbergh had to be brave. What is the bravest thing you have ever done? Why do you consider this action to be brave? Who is someone brave you admirer?

• In 1917, the 35th President, John F. Kennedy was born. For many of his school years, Kennedy attended a private school for boys. Do you think that boys and girls should go to separate schools? Should they be required to wear uniforms? Why or why not? How do you wish your school was different?


• In 1888, Jim Thorpe was born. Thorpe was an amazing athlete playing both professional sports and participating in the Olympics. Thorpe’s achievements were recognized on a postage stamp. Who are other famous Americans that deserve a postage stamp? Is having a postage stamp really such a great honor? What do you think is the best way to recognize people who achieve great things?


• June 3rd marks the first U.S. spacewalk by Ed White in 1965 during the Gemini 4 mission. White’s family was known for its pilots and military officers. It was natural for him to take this career path. Is there a type of “career path” in your family? Do you think it’s important for kids to do the same job as their parents? What do you hope to do in the future?

• In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers completed the first hot air balloon flight. The passengers in this first flight were a sheep, rooster, and duck. Explain why you think the brothers chose these animals to ride in the balloon. Would you have done the same thing? Should animals be used in experiments? Explain your thinking.


• In 1867, Frank Lloyd Wright was born. Wright was a well-respected architect. He designed a number of famous homes and buildings. Imagine you were able to design the house or building of your dreams, what would it look like? What is the most unique building or structure you have seen?


• Many people believe that if you find a penny face up, it might be lucky and you should pick it up. They also believe if you find a penny face down, you should leave it on the ground. What are your thoughts? Do you think there is such a thing as a “lucky penny”? Are you superstitious in any way?
