The right to vote has been a long fightIn the past, local governments set up poll taxes and literacy tests to deter certain people from voting
Gerrymandering
The practice of re-drawing district boundaries to disenfranchise African American voters influence the outcome of an election
Voting rights were only extended to white males, age 21+, who owned property
What about women?
What about 18 year olds who were fighting our wars?
What if you didn’t own land?
How about those who were not white?
Using the “Voting” worksheet, fill in your chart describing landmark years for voting rights
1840 Jacksonian Democracy extended the right to vote to all white males 21+ even if they did not own property
By 1971, everyone over the age of 18 had the right to vote
With only a few exceptions…
Illegal aliens
Non-registered voters
Mental patients
Dishonorably discharged soldiers
Absentee Ballot
If you are away from your registered location, you may mail in your ballot
Vote BehaviorCollege graduates, high-income individuals, religious Christians and Southern states tend to vote Republican
Low and middle income, educated, liberal, and urban individuals tend to vote Democrat
Voting as a PrivilegeIn other countries, people are literally dying for the privilege to vote
Too bad this election is rigged
and my vote won’t count…
The only vote that counts is mine and I vote for
myself!
Non-VotersBut in the land of the free, some people have become too comfortable and voting is a burden
Who needs to vote when you look like
me? I wonder what’s on TV tonight…
So please, vote!
