Bridge InspectionsBridge Inspections• Included in MAP-21

• All BIA and tribal bridges must be inspected every two years

• Inspections must be carried out by qualified inspectors

• BIA and FHWA are working on an approach to meet the MAP-21 requirements

TIGERTIGER• Special Funding for projects

– Made available through Congressional Action

• Tribes can be direct applicants and recipients• There have been 5 rounds of TIGER to date

– Tribes have been awarded or been directly involved with 12 projects totaling more than $79 million.

• No Tiger VI yet

– Development began in 1999 as a result of the passage of TEA-21.

– Utilized negotiated rulemaking with Tribal and Federal Teams.

– Rule was published in July 2004 and went into effect in FY 2005.

• SAFETEA-LU and MAP-21 changed the IRR/TTP Program.

• FHWA and BIA jointly reviewed the existing 25CFR170 and developed a draft update

• Presented to TTPCC for review and comment

• Draft was published in the Federal Register in Spring of 2013 with a request for comments

• Three consultation sessions were held in Anchorage, Phoenix, and Minneapolis

through meetings, letters, and the docket.• All of the comments have been reviewed;

responses developed; and the draft regulation updated where appropriate.

• Congressional action– Remember: SAFETEA-LU expired is 2009 but

was extended 9 times until MAP-21 was passed in 2012.
