“Floating City” TU Delft

With fears of arctic melting and flooding taking place on a more frequent basis, some people are thinking into the future. Floating houses have been around for awhile, but recently there has been a lot of development in foundation technology

that will allow for whole city blocks to float. The numerous possibilities can only beimagined. The Dutch are gearing up for climate change with amphibious, floatinghouses. If rivers rise above their banks, the houses will simply rise upwards as well.Such innovation could be good news for hurricane- and flood-stricken America.(source: http://www.aboutmyplanet.com/science-technology/floating-cities-the-dutch-might-have-the-answer-for-global-warming/)

Rising sea level: how can we live with it?

To solve this problem, we have to find out how the sea “works”. In history we havehad several occasions of floods in our province. The most important example is theflood of 1953: half of our region was flooded by a storm, combined with spring-tide. Also parts of England, Belgium and Germany were flooded in February 1953.

In the south of The Netherlands 1836 people were drowned, 72,000 wereevacuated. There was a lot of damage to buildings, cattle and infrastructure. Thisevent is referred to as: the February disaster (De Februari Ramp). In the Dutchprovinces of Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and Brabant this event is commemorated everyyear.

As a result of this disaster the world-famous Delta-plan was created.

Now, to make sure a disaster like this is not going to happen again, architects andengineers all over the world are making plans and designs to cope with the

problems of rising sea-level. In your design & technology lessons you are going towork in a team of civil-engineers to develop your own solutions for the problems.

The assignment in brief.

Make team of four students. Together design and make a model of a floating cityor another solution to allow living under the threat of rising sea levels.

The above pictures are copied from:http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/06/16/lilypad-floating-cities-in-the-age-of-global-warming/ They are designed by Vincent Callebout.

In a lot of countries and across the ages a lot of examples can be found of methodsto live with, in, under or above water.

Another example of a city on, and above water.

First, make a mind map of the problem and another mind map of your own ideasfor a solution. Here is room for your mind maps, or ask your teacher for anotherpiece of paper.

The next step is to make drawings and or notes for a mock-up/scale model you aregoing to make. You need to keep in mind that you have to make this mock-up/model during your D & T lessons in school, in a team of up to four students.

The mock-up needs to have the following dimensions: approximately 30 X 40 X 30

(centimetres).

Make a list of the materials you would like to use:

Is everything available at school? Or are you going to bring something from home touse?

Make a schedule for the work you are going to undertake, and write down who isgoing to do which part of the work:

Before your team can start building, ask you teacher if your plans are sufficient.

Your team has to present its work to class, so you also have to prepare apresentation about your work and the process taken to make the mock-up.

Good luck and have fun!!
